A new TV documentary(紀(jì)錄片) is being made which charts the lives of three children who are making a home in Britain. In each case, the children have travelled to the UK alone to join their mothers after a separation of several years.
Imran is 11 and lived in Pakistan with his grandmother before coming to a village near Peterborough in the East Midlands to join his mother and his new stepfather(繼父), whom he had not met before. He speaks Urdu and Punjabi, but not a word of English. Imran soon gets into trouble at school because he is at a disadvantage among his confident English-born classmates. The other children mock(嘲笑) him because they think he is not cool, so he covers up his awkwardness by playing the fool. After school he sits drawing a picture of himself with tears on each cheek.
Like Imran, 10-year-old Altynay from Kyrgyzstan, spoke no English when she arrived at her new home in Penistone, Yorkshire, but she was lucky to have Kanykei, who has lived in England for three years, to interpret for her. Even so, this little girl, who was the head girl at her old school, found her first few months here very hard. Early in the film she is shown laughing and dancing with Kanykei, while later she appears to be homesick and disappointed by the language barrier at her village school. But that was a few months ago. Kanykei confirms that Altynay is happier now because she has learned more English.
Compared with the two, Marshal has a huge advantage, having been educated at English-language schools in Zimbabwe. He is also outgoing. When asked if settling into a new country is hard for him, he shakes his head, “No, it was not hard for me. I am a brave person.” But his new life is not without difficulties. “It is his reading I am worried about, ” says his mother Josephine. “He didn’t have my support when he needed it.”

Please take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal. Imagine telling someone you meet today what you’re going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn’t it feel good to say it out loud? Don’t you feel one step closer already? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.
Any time you have a goal, there is some work that needs to be done to achieve it. Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you’d actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and he acknowledges it, psychologists have found it’s called a “social reality”. The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it’s already done. And then, because you’ve felt that satisfaction, you’re less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary. This goes against the traditional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right?
In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a Professor of Psychology, wrote a whole book about this. And in 2009, he did some new tests that were published. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment(許諾) to this goal to the room, and half didn’t. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Now those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.
8. What do the underlined words “social reality” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Completion of the goal.
B. Necessary hard work.
C. People’s acknowledgement.
D. A sense of satisfaction.
9. What does Peter Gollwitzer try to tell us?
A. Writing down the goal is very helpful.
B. Achieving personal goal needs more time.
C. Keeping the goal secret makes people work harder.
D. Making the goal public makes people less satisfied.
10. How did Peter Gollwitzer prove his idea about people’s goal?
A. By giving figures.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making a survey.
D. By making comparison tests.
11. What will probably happen if you tell your friends your goal?
A. You will be more confident.
B. You will not gain satisfaction.
C. You are less likely to realize it.
D. You’ll be much more motivated.

There’s no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated(主導(dǎo)) by men.
Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses(女裁縫師), sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA’s key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women’s only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA, NASA didn’t accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.
But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”
12. What did Yuri Gagarin do in 1961?
A. He landed on the moon in success.
B. He discovered many new boundaries.
C. He led scientists to explore the moon.
D. He made the first journey into the space.
13. Why does the author mention the film Hidden Figures?
A. To show women are the true heroes of NASA’s first launch.
B. To stress that black people have won equal rights in NASA.
C. To prove women can do as well as men in NASA’ projects.
D. To present women’s contributions to NASA’s space programs.
14. What is Allison McIntryre’s attitude toward women astronauts?
A. Uncaring. B. Disapproving.
C. Supportive. D. Disappointed.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Will the First Person to Step on Mars Be a Woman?
B. Great Achievements Have Been Made in Space Exploration?
C. Why Men Played an Important Role in Exploring the Unknown?
D. Men and Women Have Made Equal Contributions to NASA’s Projects?

Four Ways to Beat Summer Weight Gain
When we think of the summer holiday, most of us think of outdoor fun. So it seems like we should naturally lose weight over the summer holiday. In reality, the summer holiday isn’t all beach volleyball and water sports. Therefore, we can gain weight easily in the summer holiday. 16 Here are four ways to beat summer weight gain.
17
When we don’t have a plan, it’s easy to spend the summer holiday moving from the couch to the computer, with regular stops before the fridge. Avoid this by aiming for a specific goal, like volunteering, mastering a new skill, or working at a job. Just be sure to plan for some free time so you can relax a little!
Stay busy.
When we’re bored, it’s easy to fall into a trap of doing nothing and then feeling low on energy. In addition to helping you avoid the cookie jar, filling your days with stuff to do can give you a sense of accomplishment. 18
Beat the heat.
Don’t let summer heat put your exercise plans on hold. 19 If a gym isn’t your scene, try bowling or an indoor climbing wall. If you love being outdoors, move a regular run or soccer game to early morning or evening.
20
With school out, we lose our daily routines. If you don’t have a specific job or an activity to get up for, it’s easy to sleep late, watch too much TV, and snack more than usual. Make sure your summer days have some structure—like getting up at the same time each day. Plan activities for specific times, like exercising before breakfast.
A. Stick to a schedule.
B. Get going with goals.
C. Relax by walking outside.
D. Move your workout indoors.
E. We usually stay at home in the summer holiday.
F. That’s especially true if a dream summer job falls through.
G. However, it’s easy to avoid this problem if we know what to look out for.

It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕) frozen to his face, a wornout jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

根據(jù)下文“The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it’s already done.”
11. C 推斷題。根據(jù)第1段中的“Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.”
D
12. D 細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)第1段中的“Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961. ..”

Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space.”
14. C 推斷題。根據(jù)最后一段中的“My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”
15. A 主旨題。

Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I am doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.
