Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice.
If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you'll probably buy more than you 16_. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out what things are on sale and.decide if you 17 need them. In other words, don't buy anything just because it's 18 than usual!“ New and Improved!” or “ All Natural!” on the front of a package affects you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(成分) on the back. Then 19 the prices;that is,you should examine the prices of both different brands(品牌)and different sizes of the same brand.
Another 20 for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items come in 21 packages. These products are cheaper because producers don't spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however,is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way,in buying 22 , you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you 23 a lot of money. Although these stores aren't very attractive, their dressing rooms are not as 24 as those in the high- priced depariment stores.
Wise customers read magazine ads and watch TV programs, but they do this with one advantage:knowledge of the psychology (心理學)behind the ads. In other words,weil-informed customers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser 25 something in small print at the bottom of the page?Is there any real information in the TV programs,or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.
16. A. ask for B. think of C. look for D. plan to
17. A. very B. really C. only D. already
18. A. better B. newer C. cheaper D. hungrier
19. A. see B. find C. decide D. compare
20. A. suggestion. B. education C. examination D. advertisement
21. A. cheap B. ugly C. simple D. light

( A )
Once upon a time, there lived a great king known for being brave and strong. One day he was wandering around the woods by himself. Instead of depending on his advisers, who would please him,he secretly walked among people to collect information directly from them. In this way,he could know what was exactly going on in his kingdom and what people really thought about.
After walking for a long time,he lost his way,and finally came to a hut. He saw an old lady outside the hut. Though the old lady did not recognize the king, she still welcomed him with warmth. She served the king a plate of hot rice with curry dish. The king was so hungry that he put his fingers on the hot food carelessly, and of course the hot food burnt his fingers. He dropped some rice on the floor.
“Oh,you seem very impatient and hasty(草率的)like our king,”the old lady said. The king was surprised by the lady's words and asked,“Why do you think our king is impatient and hasty?”
The old lady smiled and replied,“Our king has a big dream of taking all his enemies’cities. However,he just focused on taking the larger and more important cities while disregarding the smaller ones.”The king was confused and stopped the old lady,“But that's a nice thing, and I don't see the problem with it.”
With a smile, again she replied,“The impatience caused you to burn your fingers and waste some of the meal. Similarly, the king's haste led to the deaths of many soldiers. Instead,if you eat the less hot part of the food on the outer edge and then

A fun way to put yourself in a good mood(情緒)is by creating a mood board, sometimes called a vision board. What's that?“It's a collection of anything that encourages you, makes you happy,o T speaks to you.”says Susie Moore,an author and life coach. Moore often guides people at mood--board-making classes. At the end of the classes, each person has built a collection that puts him or her in a positive frame of mind.
To create your own mood board, you'll need a board and pushpins. A poster board or cardboard works too. You'll also need old magazines, greeting cards, and photographs.Go through them, cutting out images for your board. Use your instincts(直覺)to choose what works best.“Anything that makes you feel good, use it,”Moore says.“When you see it,you'll know.”
Here are some tips from Moore to help you to create your own mood board.
● One place to start is with some of your favorite things. I used photos of my favourite food —watermelon, and my favourite animal—penguins.
◆You might use your mood board to set goals for things you'd like to achieve. I want to read at least 30 books this year.
? Think about a place that makes you feel safe and happy. Maybe it's your classroom,a playground,or a comfortable corner at home. You can put photos of that place on your mood board,or choose photos that remind you of it. I used this image of West Virginia, where I grew up.
This is also a good time to think about what might make you happy in the future. I included a photo of a beach, because I hope to go there soon.
Not everything on your mood board has to serve a purpose or be connected to your life. Choose some images just because you like them. Every time I look at this photo,it makes me smile.

When we talk about numbers, have you noticed how we naturally think of the number three?
41 If you are a close observer of life, you should have found that this number is all around us. Everything has a beginning,a middle and an end. We eat three meals a day. Traffic lights all over the world use three colors:red, yellow and green.Things can always become more satisfying to readers if they come in threes. Have you ever noticed how powerful brands use the rule of three to improve their marketing? For example,“ Just do it ”,“I'm lovin' it ” and “ Coke is it ”, 42
But what is it about the number three that makes it so magical?Well,we know that
九年級英語第11頁(共14頁)
the human brain is very hard to be understood. However,it enjoys thinking in patterns (規(guī)律). It is always trying to find structure in unrelated information. 43 And three is the smallest number needed to form a pattern. As the old saying goes,“Once is luck, twice is coincidence(巧合) and three times is a pattern.” 44 The audience will usually only remember three things from a speech. Do you want something in your speech to stick in your audiences’minds?Put it forward to them in groups of three.
If we properly use the rule of three in our daily lives,we can make many things easier. For example, many people like to add lots of tasks to their to-do lists. Experts, however, suggest they should limit themselves to just three tasks. 45 And the next time you are making New Year's resolutions, consider listing only three things to work on. The longer your list is,the less likely you are to keep it!
A. These top three tasks should be hard enough to be challenging.
B. In some ways,“three”is a number that has magical powers.
C. What's more,if there are no palierns, our brains will create them.
