I’m Alice. From childhood, my sister and I each received a new calendar every Christmas from my parents. And even though we shared a bedroom and could have shared a calendar, too, we always got our own. My sister is three years younger than me, and for many years she requested a teddy bear calendar. My calendars always contained photos of a princess.
Even after I began my family, I still told my husband there was only one Christmas present I’d want most every year—a family photo calendar. And each year, he’s delivered.
Each month of my calendar features a few photos taken in the same month of the year that just passed. These photos are a way for our family to revisit fun events or to realize just how much my son Ryan has grown in one year.
At the end of the year, the completed calendar will go on the bookshelf with every other photo calendar that’s come before it. Through those calendars you can know what our family was like then—what we looked like the year before and how we will fill our days in the new year.
When I was a kid, unwrapping(打開) each new calendar gave me a sense of hope and promise for the year to come. Times have changed. Now, unwrapping the new calendar is different. I feel a sense of pride and joy when I look at our family and revisit our good times. But there is also a sense of sadness when I realize how big Ryan has gotten.
As I look through the pages, I don’t know exactly what the year ahead will hold for us. However, we can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious(意識(shí)到的) of our treasures(寶藏).
And that is the true gift.
34. What can we learn about Alice’s childhood from paragraph 1?
A. Alice and her sister both had a bedroom of their own.
B. They shared only a calendar because they were poor.
C. It’s a tradition to receive a new calendar each year.
D. Alice had a miserable time with her younger sister.
35. What does Alice’s yearly completed photo calendar bring Alice now?
A. A time capsule(膠囊). B. Knowledge. C. A rubbish bag. D. A family tree.
36. What feelings does unwrapping each new calendar bring Alice now?
A. Promising. B. Mixed. C. Sad. D. Joyful.
37. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. My Wonderful Childhood B. The Use of a Calendar
C. A Year at a Time D. A Timeless Gift

Social networking isn’t only for the under 40s. More than 25% of Americans 50 years and older stay connected using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, according to new research.
“The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus,” said Kevin Donnellan, the chief communications officer at AARP, which released(發(fā)布) the report.
Nearly 25% of older Americans are on Facebook and 73% said they use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not just their children and grandchildren. “They are using the Internet to keep up with the world and the people who are important to them,” said Jean Koppen, the author of the report. She added that older adults are also on Facebook to stay connected, not only with their family, but with their friends and those in the same age group. Almost 50% of older adults were introduced to the social networking sites by a family member, mainly a child or grandchild. “Just under 20% of adults aged 50 and older say they do not use the Internet,” according to the report.
The findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,863 adults. In addition to keeping up on Facebook and Twitter, older adults are aware(知道的) of the latest technology. 83% had heard about the Apple iPad and 11% intended to buy one.
Despite the popularity of the Internet among the over 50s, they still mostly go to newspapers and magazines in paper for news. Only 1% said they followed blogs.
38. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Social networking isn’t for the under 40s in the U.S.A.
B. American old people’s way of life is quite fashionable.

39. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

B. About 460 people in the telephone survey often use Facebook.
C. About 20% of adults aged 50 plus have access to the Internet.
D. Three quarters of the people surveyed got to know the Internet through their family.
40. From the text, it can be concluded that ________.
A. many older Americans are open-minded about new developments
B. Kevin Donnellan supports this change among older Americans
C. young people should introduce their elders to new technology
D. in a high-tech age it is difficult to avoid social networking
41. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A novel. B. A newspaper.
C. A technology guide. D. A student’s research paper.

The regular world, which is presented to us by our five senses—you could call it reality(現(xiàn)實(shí)) 1.0, is not always the most user-friendly place. We get lost in unfamiliar cities; we meet people whose language we don’t understand. So why not try the improved version(版本): augmented reality (AR:增強(qiáng)現(xiàn)實(shí)) or reality 2.0? AR technology adds computer-produced images on the real world by using a mobile phone camera or special video glasses.
Early forms of AR are already here. With the right downloads, smart phones can deliver information about nearby ATMs and restaurants and other points of interest. But that’s just the beginning. A few years from now, the amount of information available will have increased hugely. You will not only see that there’s a Chinese restaurant on the next block, but you will be able to see the menu and read reviews of it.
This is where the next revolution(革命) in computing will take place: in the interface (界面) between the real world and the information brought to us via the Internet. Imagine bubbles(氣泡) moving slowly before your eyes, filled with cool information about everything that you see in front of you.
Let’s jump ahead to ten years from now. A person trying to fix their car won’t be reading a book with pictures; they will be wearing a device(設(shè)備) that shows 3D computer pictures onto the equipment under repair, labelling parts and giving step-to-step guidance.
The window on the AR world can be a smart phone or special video glasses. But in ten years’ time these will have been replaced by contact lenses (隱形眼鏡) with tiny LEDs, which present something at a readable distance in front of the eye. So a deaf person wearing these lenses will be able to see what people are saying.
The question is, while we are absorbed in our new augmented reality worlds, how will we be communicating with each other?
42. What is the topic of the text?
A. The next information technology revolution.
B. Early forms of augmented reality technology.
C. The differences between reality 1.0 and reality 2.0.
D. The relationship between people living in reality 2.0.
43. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The menu. B. The block. C. The revolution. D. The restaurant.
44. What are tiny LEDs used to do?
A. Protect people’s eyes. B. Show text and images.
C. Warn users of dangers. D. Replace video glasses.
45. Which phrase can be used to replace the underlined phrase “are absorbed in” in the last paragraph?
A. are surprised at B. are addicted into
C. are capable of D. are qualified for
第二節(jié) (共 5 小題;每小題 2.5 分,滿分 12.5 分)

How to stay focused in class
Being relaxed during class is a bad habit, and it is also bad to your grade. Focusing in class not only proves to teachers that you are a capable student but also shows that you have the ability to control yourself, which will be very important.
46_____
No matter how much you want to sit with your friends during the class, try your best to avoid them. Talking with friends around you is not going to give you the focus in class. This will get you into trouble.
Look at the teacher and make eye contact.
Your teacher is not just standing up there talking. 47_____ Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention by looking them in the eye. This person should have your full attention at all times during class.
Take notes.
By taking notes, you’ll be able to “get into” the lesson. Write down key points as your teacher speaks. And listen to the key phrases such as “This is important”, “This is the main idea”, “This will be the test” etc. 48_____
Get involved in class discussions.
This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. If a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it. 49_____ This shows the teacher that you are listening carefully during the class.
Ask a question.
50_____ This really shows your teacher that you want to be better, and can recognize the things you are having difficulty with. Chances are that someone else in the class has the same question (and was too afraid to ask!) They’ll be relieved, and so will you.
A. Avoid sitting with friends.
B. This can help you listen more attentively.
C. If he or she asks for an opinion, share your own.
D. Talking with friends makes you lose interest in class.
E. He or she is trying to give you an acceptable education.
F. The more quickly you answer, the more attention you pay.
G. If you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask.
