Kaydence Henslee, 13, was spending her spring break visiting Disney Wrld with her family. During a pl day at their htel, she nticed a small uncnscius(無(wú)意識(shí)的) bdy in the deep end f the water.

With their silly smiles and big brwn eyes, Australian sea lins are adrable. Phtgrapher Luise Cper shuld knw: in late 2019 she visited Kangar Island with a team f scientists frm University f Sydney t phtgraph the sea lin clny at the beautiful Seal Bay. Cper spent hurs sitting with her camera amid sand dunes watching sea lins g abut their day — mthers taking care f their yung, huge males lazily sunning themselves n the sand, thers playing bitey-face in the surf. “These playful creatures are just like puppy dgs,” she says.
Sadly, hunted almst t dying ut in the 1800s, these creatures’ slw recvery has been influenced by their very lng breeding(繁殖) perid — Australian sea lins breed every 18 mnths, cmpared t 12 mnths fr fur seals. Over the last 40 years, sea lin numbers have fallen by mre than half. Cper was n the Suth Australian island t recrd the imprtant wrk being dne by scientist Dr Rachael Gray and her team, wh are trying t find ut why.
“Hkwrm(鉤蟲) disease is quite cmmn in Australian sea lins,” Cper explains. “S scientists like Dr Gray are treating them with an antibitic(抗生素) t see if they can stamp it ut(消滅,根除).” High levels f mercury and ecli have als been discvered in their system. Tgether, these human pllutants weaken the sea lins’ immune(免疫的) systems. There are hpes that stamping ut hkwrm in Australian sea lins will give them a better chance f survival.
The team’s visit t Kangar Island was n the eve f the deadly bushfires that swept thrugh much f the island, destrying wildlife and animal habitats. Dr Gray raced frm Sydney t check n the seals and, the sea lins mstly paid n attentin t what had happened. Thankfully, the sea lin clny at Seal Bay survived unharmed.
