What a Scoop! Readers’ Favorite Ice-Cream Shops
From pear and cheese in Edinburgh to pomegranate ripple at Ventor, our reporters show off the coolest licks.
Mary’s Milk Bar in the Grassmarket is popular with locals and visitors, and is the perfect pit stop for people dashing between fringe festival shows. Flavors change every day, with pear and cheese among the regulars. You can grab your ice and walk up the Vennel Steps for breathtaking views of Edinburgh castle.

“Che buono! The best gelato (ice cream) outside Naples!” exclaimed my son’s Italian girlfriend on her first visit to Delphini’s. Giovanni grinned and gave her an extra, free scoop. Every day there’s a queue outside this shop in this progressive south Devon town. Delphini’s gelato is made out of organic local milk and cream. What’s more, it is dairy-free, making it a good option for vegans in Totnes. Flavors change daily and they do free tasting.

Shepherds Ice Cream Shop in Abergavenny is a Wes Anderson-styled drop-in. It’s all made locally from goat-milk, the business is run by two generations of a family that has some sort of tradition around a golden scoop. Shepherds often pop up with a vintage ice-cream trailer at festivals and events around the UK. It’s my family’s year-round Friday treat.
Alexia Tucker
Crave Ices at Ventnor invents new flavors constantly. Always over 20 choices, plenty of sweet, creamy ones, but also salty, alcoholic and non-dairy delights. Recent highlights include pomegranate ripple, whisky marmalade (over-18s only!). Once I mentioned a flavor I’d enjoyed the previous year. They made some especially for me so I could have it again before I left for home.
Lucy Marder

CHAITANYA Tamhane’s The Disciple (produced by Netflix) could just as well have been titled “discipline”. This is the quality that the hero named Sharad (Aditya Modak) has to organize his life around, and we witness both his patience and frustrations as he comes to terms with the possibility that he might never find a proper position in the world he loves. Is he good enough, as a singer or as a student? It is a question unanswered in the film.
It is a story about the relationship between art and artists. It shows us the confusion Sharad, an Indian classical music fan, is faced with after years of pursuit of music dream. Even though he is anxious about his poverty and ordinariness, he continues to study day after day. He shows great respect for his teacher, a distinguished old musician, treating his teacher like his father. However, when he finds out his teacher is not as respectable as he thought, he begins to question whether it is worth his efforts or not.
Slow-paced as this Marathi film may seem, it becomes a hypnotic experience as you become invested in the central character and his journey. The narrative moves around in time, giving us glimpses of Sharad’s poor childhood and the present day, where he tries to draw help from audio recordings of talks by the late teacher named Maai (voiced by Sumitra Bhave). Tamhane’s long takes and almost-unchanging shots—characteristic of his earlier feature Court—work wonderfully for this subject matter. In the musical performances, the camera sometimes moves only very slightly forward, as if mindful of disturbing the performers’ space.
The Disciple is also driven by its attention to detail and its many little vignettes (簡介)—the mildly regretted look on Sharad’s face when his teacher tells him, mid-performance and in front of a seated audience, “No, you aren’t listening”, or the slow upgrade to hostility (敵意) when the mother of one of his students asks that her boy should be allowed to take time off to perform with a “rock” band.
24. Why can the film also be titled “discipline”?
A. The film questions the significance of discipline.
B. The film talks about the role that discipline plays in music.
C. The hero is a self-disciplined person and has experienced a lot.
D. The hero doubts whether discipline can lead to his dream.
25. What does the underlined word “hypnotic” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Dull. B. Fascinating. C. Tough. D. Heart-breaking.
26. What has Sharad NOT experienced in the story?
A. The deep love for classical music. B. The depression of not realizing his dream.
C. The poverty in his childhood. D. The praise from his teacher.
27. In which section of a newspaper can the text appear?
A. Education. B. Entertainment. C. Science. D. Lifestyle.

Many linguists (語言學(xué)家) predicted in the 1960s that accents would disappear in America. As Americans moved across the country, they said English would become standardized, meaning that it would be spoken the same way everywhere. But sociolinguist William Labov of the University of Pennsylvania says, while some accents in America are disappearing, others are growing stronger.
One of these regional accents is Native American English, known as the “rez accent”. It is spoken in many Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada. The word “rez” is shortened from the word “reservation”. Reservations are areas of land in the United States and Canada that are kept separate for Native Americans or Indigenous people to live in.
Kalina Newmark is from the Sahtu Region in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Her ancestors were called the Dene people, but she does not speak her tribe’s language of Slavey. “My mom can understand and speak it, but she didn’t pass it on to us. She learned it from her great-grandmother. My grandmother chose not to pass along the language because she wanted to make it easier for her children when they went to school,” Newmark said. Newmark went to Dartmouth College in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The school is known for its Indigenous student population. There, she met other Indigenous students from all over North America. Newmark noticed something very interesting about everyone’s pronunciation. The English they spoke shared some similar qualities, although they came from different language backgrounds. These especially could be heard during times of socializing. The accent was even present for students who had not learned their ancestral language. Indigenous communities speak different English dialects, but these ways of speaking shared prosody (韻律學(xué)) patterns.
The rez accent possibly came from different Native tribes interacting in the 1880s when Indigenous peoples were placed on reservations. The Native American and First Nations children were forced into school and had to speak English. The rez accent also might have had its beginning in the 1950s and 1960s when the US government closed some reservations and sent Native American into cities. The children were forced to speak English and interact with each other. “They were all learning English together,” said Newmark, “and making an English of their own.”
28. What can we infer from Kalina Newmark’s experience?
A. She learnt her tribe’s language from her mother.
B. Her ancestors spoke English with rez accent.
C. Native American students account for a considerable percentage in her school.
D. Indigenous students speak English in exactly the same way in the school.
29. Which statement is TRUE about the “rez accent”?
A. It is a shared pattern of speaking English among the Indigenous population.
B. It originated from the Native Americans’ ancestral languages.
C. Us government is worried about the tendency of speaking English with rez accent.
D. The reason for the continuing growth of rez accent has been confirmed.
30. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing a reason. C. By giving an example. D. By having an argument.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Accents of American English are disappearing.
B. Native Americans speak English with a similar accent.
C. Indigenous people obtain rez accent from their ancestors.
D. The majority of Americans don’t speak standardized English.

Frederik Duerinck isn’t a jeweller, but his next project is a necklace. This piece, though, doesn’t feature a precious stone as a decoration, but rather a small box. Inside the cube is a battery and scenting system designed to deliver a puff of fragrance on demand that Duerinck describes as a “scent bubble”. Duerinck acknowledges that its current size and battery life are barriers, as is the quality of the scent and the projection. But he remains optimistic. The next step, he hopes, is to improve it enough to win over investors and secure funding for further development on a wearable version.
Duerinck, of course, isn’t the first to try to deliver scents on demand to people’s noses in an attempt to create a more immersive sensory experience. In the movie era, attempts to add scent began as early as 1916. Then came Smellovision, unveiled in 1939, it was equal to a series of pipes attached to viewers’ chairs through which a projectionist could deliver smell and show the images at the same time. Smellovision itself, was a failure, largely because the scent technology worked so poorly—the scents were too diffuse (彌漫的) to give a satisfactory experience. Clearing a particular scent in time for the next to move freely was also troublesome. A rival system, known as Aromarama, displayed similar shortcomings.
The filmmaker John Waters tried scratch and sniff cards in the early 1980s, but no other filmmaker copied his trick.
Even now, though, as the world of entertainment has become more high-tech, and immersive with virtual reality headsets, scent remains the one element that is difficult to find and hard to copy. Perhaps the most fundamental problem is that we don’t yet fully understand how our sense of smell functions.
32. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To tell us the story of Frederik Duerinck. B. To promote a new product.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To share the story of a “scent bubble”.
33. What is the disadvantage of the special necklace?
A. Its short battery life. B. Its particular scent. C. Its demanding environment. D. Its high price.
34. What can be inferred from this text?
A. Duerinck’s project is in need of financial support. B. In 1916, viewers’ chairs could deliver smell.
C. Many filmmakers copied John’s trick. D. Aromarama worked better than Smellovision.
35. What is the biggest challenge while making films with scent?
A. The scent technology doesn’t offer a satisfying experience.
B. Researchers don’t know how our sense of smell works.
C. Clearing scent in time is still a puzzle.
D. The operation is too complex.

Andy and Eric were two friends who often played together. One day, on their way back home from school, they rode slowly, talking about the fishing trip that they had planned for the coming summer vacation. While turning a corner, Andy cried out, “A fight near the lake! Let’s go to watch!”
“No,” said Eric. “Let’s go home and not get involved in their quarrel. Stay away from it, or we may get into trouble. What’s more, our parents are waiting for us at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (膽小鬼).” Andy laughed at him. Eric was a little annoyed, but he didn’t say anything, just riding home directly. The next day, he went to school as usual.
However, Andy had told all the class that Eric was too timid to do anything brave. So the whole class laughed at him a lot. And from then on, they looked down on Eric, unwilling to play with him. Eric was very sad but he didn’t blame Andy for his being rude to him, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Therefore, he ignored their teasing, studying even harder. What was different was that he had to go home alone.
Several days later, Andy together with his new friends was riding home. They were so absorbed in their conversation that they were unaware of everything else around them.
Suddenly, Andy noticed an unusual buzz of noise. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the noisy mass seemed to be heading angrily towards them.
“Bees!” someone shouted. The boys were caught in great panic. All of them except Andy rode as fast as possible to escape. Andy was too scared to move.

第一節(jié):
Dear students,
With the reading month approaching, I’m here to appeal to all of you to do more reading.
As is well-acknowledged, reading plays an essential part in our daily life. First of all, it can enrich our minds and teach us to distinguish between right and wrong, laying a solid foundation for further learning. Furthermore, reading can broaden our horizons and perfect ourselves.
I have just read a good book titled The Old Man and the Sea, where I have not only appreciated the beauty of English, but also I have learnt to face difficulties in life bravely like the hero. I strongly recommend you to read it.
Let’s get down to reading the novel. I am convinced you can be impressed and inspired a lot.

第二節(jié):
Andy stopped there, with the buzz louder and louder. Just at that moment, Eric rode rapidly towards him like an arrow. He stopped, threw off his clothes and wrapped up their faces. After that, he shouted to Andy, “This way! There is a lake ahead!” With no time to waste, they rode furiously in the direction of the lake, the crazy bees following them. Finally, they made it to the lake. Off their bikes and into the cool water they lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding their breath for as long as they could, they came up for air and noticed the bees had gone.
Dragging themselves out of the lake, they struggled up to the shore. Andy looked at Eric gratefully and was ashamed of having called Eric a coward. He realized that Eric had true courage. He hugged Eric, saying “sorry” to Eric repeatedly for his rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Eric forgave him happily. He and Andy were friends again and they went home together as usual. From that, Andy learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

W: I wanted to, but I realized I was scared of heights, so I just gave up. Quite by chance, the weather was bad, so we had to call the sailing trip off.
M: That’s a pity. So what was the most exciting part of the trip?
W: Probably having the adventures in the old caves. I had never done it before, and thought it was great.

M: Many young girls dream of being models. Now, my first question: Is modelling what you dream of?
W: Actually I dreamt of being a journalist when I was small. However, my mother put me in TV commercials and other advertisements when I was just in the middle school. I actually spent my most time being a model. Gradually, I began to fall in love with what I did.
M: Do you think that modelling has influenced your life at all?
W: It’s difficult to say. Sometimes I feel like it’s hard to make friends when you are a model. It seems like all they care about is my looks. I travel a lot, and that also puts a lot of stress on any relationships that I have.
M: What is your favorite part of being a model?
W: I really like all of the traveling that I get to do. I have been able to go to Europe and Latin America and a lot of other beautiful locations around the world.
M: Now, finally, do you have any advice for young girls that want to be models?
W: Sure. I just want to tell you guys never to give up, and don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are not beautiful... because everyone is beautiful in their own way!
Text 10
W: Many years ago, the Pandetti family lived in the mountains. Grandpa Pandetti traveled into the village to trade his goods. While he was there, he looked for a special gift for his family. After a long search, he found a lovely mirror. No one in his family had ever seen a mirror. Grandpa Pandetti bought the mirror and hurried home to his family. It was late when Grandpa arrived home. He hung the mirror on the wall and then fell fast asleep. Early in the morning, little Paul Pandetti awoke. As he walked into the room, he saw a young boy looking back at him. “Papa, Papa, someone has broken into our house,” Paul cried. Papa Pandetti hurried down. He glanced at the mirror and saw a strong man looking back at him. He glared at the man. The man glared back. He pounded his hand on the table and watched as the man pounded his hand on the table. Mama Pandetti came into the room. She stopped in her tracks when she saw a young woman looking at her. Mama Pandetti smiled and waved at the woman. The woman smiled and waved at Mama. Papa Pandetti watched her with curiosity and then stepped up to the mirror with a smile. The strong man appeared once again in the mirror, but this time he wore a smile upon his face. From that day forward, the Pandetti family smiled as they walked through the room. They were always greeted by a smile in return.

參考范文
第一節(jié):
The Students’ Union
第二節(jié):
