第二部分 閱讀理解(滿分40分)閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
21.(6分)There’s a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too––– that’s why it made Nov 16th “International Day for Tolerance”.
But first of all, what is tolerance? According to French philosopher Voltaire, tolerance is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other’s fool––– that is the first law of nature.”
Very often, people don’t realize that they’re intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don’t put themselves in the shoes of women.
It’s worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we’re speaking here? To agree to be “tolerant” of someone isn’t necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there’s something wrong with them.
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That’s the reason we should be tolerant. It’s a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness.
1、What’s the purpose of the UN “International Day For Tolerance”?
A.To arouse people’s awareness of tolerance among people.
B.To celebrate the founding of the UN.
C.To solve the problem of global warming.
D.To change peopled opinion towards globalization.
2、Why do men behave intolerantly towards women?
A.Because men don’t realize the purpose of the UN.
B.Because men are physically stronger than women.
C.Because men don’t appreciate the shoes of women.
D.Because men are not willing to understand women.
3、Why is it meaningless to use the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”?
A.Because they are hard to pronounce in English.
B.Because they don’t express the exact meaning people refer to.
C.Because they can’t be translated into other languages.
D.Because they can’t be used in a respectful way.
4、In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”?
A.Humans are advised to treat others better.
B.Humans leant to find faults in others.
C.Humans need to give something to others.
D.Humans will change their attitudes to others.
22.(8分)More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, lots of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1.67mill ion pieces are housed no more than 200 museums in4 7 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23, 000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn lo official channels in) to demand the return of relics.
In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企業(yè)家)Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a bigheadache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(數(shù)據(jù)庫(kù)) collecting relevant information. 23.(8分)From fast food cooks to doormen at restaurants and hotels, robots are slowly entering the workforce in nearly every industry. Most recently, the world welcomed its first operational robot policeman.
“Robocop”, the newest member of the Dubai police force, made the first public appearance on Sunday at the Fourth Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference, where it greeted guests. At about 70 inches tall and weighing nearly 220 pounds, Robocop seeks to engage with residents and tourists. Featuring an “emotion detector (探測(cè)器)”, the robot can recognize a person’s gestures and body language from about 5 feet away.
Robocop’s skills don’t stop there—the emotionally intelligent bot can detect if a person is happy, sad and even angry by studying his or her facial expression. And just like your human friends would do, if Robocop sees you’re unhappy, it will try to lift your spirits. More importantly, when it comes to fighting crime, the robot uses the Internet, artificial intelligence and other smart technologies to spot offenders using facial recognition. Its navigation (導(dǎo)航) skills grant it the ability to map out areas and travel on its own. Equipped with a built-in tablet, Robocop can communicate with people, speak six languages, respond to public inquiries, shake hands and even make military salutes.
“With the aim to assist people on the streets,” said Brigadier-General Khalid Nasser A1 Razzouqi, director-general of smart services at Dubai Police, “the Robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime recently, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels.”

24.(8分)Your 2018 Reading List, Provided by Bill Gates
Most of us can’t live like billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but we can read like him. Gates recommended four books in 2018—though some were published earlier.
Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2017)
The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. That’s mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates.
The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2017)
Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui illustrates manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.
Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)
Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (縈繞) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.
Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)
This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role innovation will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.
1、Which books refer to the field of science?
A.Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci.
B.Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story.
C.Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do.
D.The Best We Could Do and Lincoln in the Bardo.
2、If you are interested in thrillers, whose book will you most probably choose?
A.Walter Isaacson. B.Thi Bui.
C.George Saunders. D.David Christian.
3、Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The Best We Could Do is an autobiography.
B.Lincoln in the Bardo has been warmly received.
C.David Christian talks much about the part that innovation will play.
D.Readers can only read about Leonardo da Vinci’s contributions towards art.
25.(10分) Americans are more stressed than ever, according to an American Psychological Association survey, and nearly one-third of the people say stress impacts their physical or mental health. If you have any of these symptoms, your stress might be making you sick. Here’s how to battle against them.
If you’ve never suffered from headaches but suddenly your head is constantly striking, you might be too stressed. Stress releases chemicals that can cause changes to nerves and blood vessels(血管)in the brain, which brings on a headache. Stress can cause them or make them worse. It’s also common for your muscles to tense up when you’re stressed, which can also cause a headache.
WHAT TO DO:
If you don’t want to take medicine, try spreading lavender(薰衣草)oil on your temples(太陽(yáng)穴)when a headache starts.
Stress can make you mentally sick, too. Too much of the stress hormone cortisol(皮質(zhì)醇)can make it harder to concentrate, causing memory problems as well as anxiety or depression says Dr. Levine.
WHAT TO DO:
Relax until you regain your concentration. Practice closing your eyes and breathing in and out slowly, concentrating only on your breath.
Losing a few strands of hair is normal—old hair follicles(囊)are replaced by new ones over time—but stress can disturb that cycle.
Significant stress pushes a large number of hair follicles into what’s called a resting stage and then a few months later those hairs fall out, according to MayoClinic. org. Stress can also cause the body’s resistant system to attack your hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.
WHAT TO DO:
Be patient. Once your stress level returns to normal, your hair should start growing back.
187、If you’re stressed, you might have one of the following symptoms EXCEPT that .
A.you keep getting headaches B.you always have a cold
C.your hair is falling out D.your brain feels confused
1、Which of the following is suggested if your brain goes out of focus?
A.Breathing slowly with your eyes closed.
B.Waiting until your brain returns to normal.
C.Spreading lavender oil on your temples.
D.Relaxing and attacking your brain softly.
2、What will happen once we get over our stress according to the passage?
A.Our hair starts falling out and then grows back.
B.Our body’s resistant system attacks your hair follicles.
C.Our hair starts growing again.
D.A serious headache starts.
