A few minutes later yur bss appears at yur desk. “We’ve nticed that yu’re spending mre time n Linkedln lately, s I wanted t talk with yu abut yur career and whether yu’re happy here,” she says. Uh-h.
It’s an awkward scene. Attritin (損耗)has always been expensive fr cmpanies, but in many industries the cst f lsing gd wrkers is rising, wing t tight labr markets. Thus cmpanies are intensifying(增強(qiáng))their effrts t predict which wrkers are at high risk f leaving s that managers can try t stp them. Tactics (策略)range frm electrnic mnitr t sphisticated(復(fù)雜的)analyses f emplyees’ scial media lives.
Sme f this wrk may be a reasn t let emplyees t quit. In general, peple leave their jbs because they dn’t like their bss, dn’t see pprtunities fr prmtin r grwth, r are ffered a higher pay; these reasns have held steady fr years.
New research cnducted by CEB, a Washingtn-based technlgy cmpany, lks nt just at why wrkers quit but als at when. “We’ve learned that what really affects peple is their sense f hw they’re ding cmpared with ther peple in their peer grup, r with where they thught they wuld be at a certain pint in life, says Brian Krpp, wh heads CEB’s HR practice. “We’ve learned t fcus n mments that allw peple t make these cmparisns.”
Technlgy als prvides clues abut which star emplyees might be eyeing the exit. Cmpanies can tell whether emplyees using wrk cmputers r phnes are spending time n (r even just pening e-mails frm) career websites, and research shws that mre firms are paying attentin t these things. Large cmpanies have als begun tracking badge swipes(瀏覽痕跡)---- emplyees’ use f an ID t enter and exit the building r the parking garage---t identify patterns that suggest a wrker may be interviewing fr a jb.

Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University f Suthern Califrnia’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Ls Angeles. He is part f a team f scientists wh are researching hw AI and machine learning can mre easily recgnize cancerus grwths in the breast. Rawat prvides infrmatin abut cancer cells t a cmputer. He says this data helps the machine learn. “. . . Yu can put the data int cmputers and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recgnitin is imprtant t making decisins.”
David Agus is anther USC researcher. He says machines are nt ging t take the place f dctrs. “Cmputers will nt treat patients, but they will help make certain decisins and lk fr things that the human brain can’t recgnize by itself. Once a cnfirmed cancerus grwth is remved, dctrs still have t treat the patient t reduce the risk f cancer returning. The frm f treatment depends n the kind f cancer.”
Currently, researchers take a thin piece f tissue, put it n a small piece f glass and add clr t better see the cells. That prcess culd take days r even lnger. Scientists say artificial intelligence can d smething better than just cunt cells. Thrugh machine learning, it can recgnize cmplex patterns, r structures, and learn hw the cells are rganized.
The hpe is that machines will sn be able t make a quick identificatin f cancer that is free f human mistakes. “All f a sudden, we have the cmputing pwer t really d it in real time. . . We culdn’t have dne this, we didn’t have the cmputing pwer t d this several years ag, but nw it’s all changed.” Agus adds that the prcess culd be dne fr almst n cst in the develping wrld.
