Abut tw and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Sn, we nticed small black spts n nearby pieces f flating ice. Emperr penguins! Then, we began the tw-mile hike ver the ice t the penguin clny. In Church Creek, Maryland, fr example, a 1-year-ld, 17-acre state-natinal park memrializes the place where Harriet Tubman was brn and enslaved. Tubman escaped slavery and later helped many thers escape, t. The park was expected t draw 75,000 visitrs its first year. Hwever, it attracted 100,000.
Histry prfessinals cite several factrs fr the phenmenn. The Black Lives Matter mvement, cnflicts ver Cnfederate mnuments, prtests by NFL players and last year's vilence in Charlttesville, Virginia, als have made a difference. These activities have caused mre Americans t cnsider hw race affects them.
When the natinal museum pened, "We thught that might have the impact f gaining the public sptlight. Just the ppsite," said Mre, president f Charlestn, Suth Carlina's Internatinal African American Museum. It has jump-started mre presentatins f black histry. There are many intercnnected links between Earth and space explratin. The Earth and Space Fundatin(基金會(huì)), was funded fr the purpses f develping such links by field research and direct practical actin.
Prjects that have been supprted by the Fundatin include envirnmental prjects using technlgies f space explratin: satellite cmmunicatins, GPS, remte sensing, advanced materials and pwer surces. Fr example, the peple f Guatemala are faced with the lss f the frests n which their livelihd depends. Rather than ppsing ecnmic prgress and trying t save the frests n their wn strengths, ne new apprach is t imprve the value f the frests. The Fundatin has previusly given a fund t a grup f explrers that used remte sensing t plan ec-turism rutes in the frests f Guatemala, thus bringing incme t the lcal ppulatins thrugh turism. This nvel apprach is nw making the prtectin f the frests a reasnable ecnmic decisin.
The Fundatin funds many archaelgical(考古學(xué)的) field prjects, which reflect the cntributins f the early civilizatin t astrnmy(天文學(xué)) and space sciences. The Fundatin helped fund a large archaelgy prject by the Sciety fr Syrian Archaelgy at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles. It wrked with the Syrian gvernment and used GPS and satellite imagery t lcate banks f earth, r ‘tels’, cntaining treasures and relics f ancient civilizatins. These cllectins are being used t build a better picture f the nature f the civilizatins that gave birth t astrnmy.
Field research als applies the Earth’s envirnmental and bilgical resurces t the human explratin and settlement f space. This may include the use f remte envirnments n Earth, as well as physilgical and psychlgical studies in harsh envirnments. In ne research prject, the Fundatin gave financial supprt t an internatinal caving expeditin t study the psychlgy f explrers in caves in Mexic fr a perid f time. The results f the tests were used by the NASA Jhnsn Space Center t imprve US astrnaut selectin standard. Besides, a Mars-like prgramme has been launched in ne area in the the Arctic, whse envirnment is similar t the Mars’, t test cmmunicatins and explratin technlgies in preparatin fr the human explratin f Mars.
What d we knw abut the nvel apprach in the Guatemala prject?
A. It ppsed the develpment f ecnmy.
B. It reduced the impact f turists n the frests.
C. It shwed that preserving the frests can be prfitable.
D. It gave the Fundatin greater cntrl ver the frests.
Why were GPS and satellite imagery used in the Syrian prject ?
A. T explre land that is hard t reach.
B. T find ancient items buried under the earth.
C. T limit the impact f archaelgical activity
D. T rebuild the picture f all the civilizatins.
34. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A. The space envirnment is as tugh as the envirnment n Earth.
B. It is unlikely t test the technlgies needed t explre Mars n Earth.
C. The length f time in caves certainly leads t the best astrnaut selectin standard.
D. Space-like envirnments n Earth may help us understand hw t perate in the space.
35. What is the writer’s purpse in the passage?
A. T encurage peple t explre the space.
B. T intrduce the functin f the Fundatin.
C. T persuade peple t study the caves.
D. T shw the imprtance f space explratin.

Active listening is a way f cmmunicating that can increase understanding between a speaker and a listener. Its gal is t have an pen sharing f ideas and feelings. It shws respect and cnsideratin fr the persn speaking.
Active listening is very useful fr family members. Family members ften develp bad listening habits. They react t each ther based n what they expect the ther persn t say rather than n what is actually said. 36
37 Miscmmunicatin r lack f understanding between c-wrkers can lead t hurt feelings, which in turn can make it difficult fr peple t wrk tgether. Active listening can slve such issues and create greater understanding and team spirit amng c-wrkers.
Fr example, smene is unexpectedly rude t their c-wrker, r seems incnsiderate f their needs. The c-wrker might feel hurt, r they might becme angry and begin t dislike that persn. Active listening can help reslve such prblems. 38 Meanwhile the c-wrker is given a chance t explain and maybe even aplgize.
It culd be that the rude c-wrker was ging thrugh a difficult time at hme r n the jb and was unaware f hw bad his r her behavir was. By listening respectfully, anther persn might learn mre abut that c-wrker's situatin. 39 In this way, situatins that culd turn int majr cnflicts instead lead t greater understanding.
Smetimes peple d nt cmmunicate with thse they are clse t because they fear the ther persn's reactin. Rather than saying, fr example, "It really hurts my feelings when yu behave like that way" ,the partner might say nthing at all in rder t avid a fight. 40 If the partners actively listen t each ther, thugh, they can fully explain hw they feel, and this can help avid any hurt feelings.
Active listening can als be useful in the wrkplace.
Active listening prvides a way t break this pattern.
Hwever, the hurt feelings remain and can build up ver time.
S the family can be expected t be harmnius.
Yu can be sure that c-wrker’s prblems must all be slved.
It allws a persn t say hw they feel abut their c-wrker's behavir.
And he als gains that c-wrker's appreciatin fr their willingness t listen.

I was amazed after hearing what she said. She had seen smething in me I hadn't seen. “Will yu help them?” she asked. I std straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I culdn't believe it came ut f my muth, but it did. I bravely walked t my grup and sat dwn. Different newspaper clumns were assigned accrding t interests. We did research. Halfway thrugh the week, I felt myself enjying the cmpany f these three partners. I grew sincerely interested in learning smething abut them.
Finally the result f assignment came ut. T ur surprise, we gt the first prize. After that semester ended, I always received a friendly hell frm my grup. And I was always happy t see them. I dn’t recall what the newspaper’s headline was r even the culture we wrte abut, but I did learn smething that week. I was given a chance t see ther peple in a new light. They weren't misfits, just peple that n ne cared enugh abut t try t understand except Mrs. Bartlett. She gave us an A n that assignment. We shuld have handed it right back, fr she was the ne wh truly deserved it.
