A group of swans (天鵝) flew down to a beach where a crow (烏鴉) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain (鄙視).
“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”
One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.
Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and he began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.
The swan pretended not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick?”
“No,” said the crow. He knew that he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life…”

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green -a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.
28. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can _________.
A. tell different shapes B. see in a weak light
C. kill mosquitoes D. tell the difference between blue and green
29. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?
A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
30. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a _________.
A. red light B. yellow light
C. blue light D. green light
31. The passage is mainly about _________.
A. color and its surprising effects. B. women being luckier than men
C. danger caused by color blindness D. color blindness
D
Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided not to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said “five cents each” People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order (訂單) for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules. The most important one was: “The customer is always right”.

A. the factory workers worked 24 hours a day.
B. knives were ordered in large quantities directly from the factory.
C. the knives were made in Germany, where labour was cheap.
D. the knives were produced in one factory.
35. The sentence “The customer is always right” in the last paragraph suggests that _________.
A. whenever there is a quarrel between the customer and shop assistant, the customers are always right.
B. If you want to succeed, the rule is the only way.
C. stores must always follow the customer’s orders if they want to make more money.

Do you want to be at the top of your class? Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!
36 I cannot stress (強(qiáng)調(diào)) enough how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worthwhile to add. Pay attention during class, especially during lectures.
Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every word your teacher says but write down what he writes on the board, or any special fact you think you might need for a test. 37 This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.
Don’t skip school (逃學(xué)). You will be missing out on stuff. 38 However, you will have more work because you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.
39 If you have an “I don’t care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to offer you extra credit (學(xué)分). The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students. Try not to laugh when other students make a mistake.
Always ask questions. 40 If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, seek help. Ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc. Get a tutor if you need one.
A. Be prepared.
B. Write in your own words.
C. Staying organized will be helpful.
D. Keep a good attitude toward things.
E. There is no shame in needing some help.
F. It is true that you could make up the work.
G. Pay attention to everything the teacher says.
