Not even "hello". I was 18. I'd been working for my dad's restaurant in Milan and I wanted a new experience. My friend from home lived in London and he used to tell me how incredible it was. I was really bored, so I took my luggage and left.I was so lost when I arrived at Stansted. To me, English sounded like Chinese. I only arrived with a few hundred pounds. I lived with my friend in East London for a while. I couldn't find a job for a month. Finally I found a waiter role in a restaurant. At the time, I had nothing else going on in my life. I used to get up, go to work, and sleep. It was no difference every day. Then one day on my lunch break, I saw a Gymbox. When I took a look in, there was an amazing Muay Thai (泰拳) class. I used to do boxing when I was 15 but I wasn't that serious about it. There and then I joined the gym and signed up for the Thai boxing team.I fell in love with it. I never missed a session (一場(chǎng)) . I started training a lot and the head coach said to me one day, "Do you want to fight?" I knew that's what I wanted to do. He put me in competitions and I won my first nine amateur games. After watching me progress, he offered to help me fight professionally. However, at one point I had a motorcycle crash and was out for 18 months. This year I've fought in Milan and London. I'd say I'm about 12 fights away from becoming a winnerSometimes I can't believe how far I've come from that day I arrived in England. I think everything that's happened has been because I'm committed. But anyone could do it. If you put in 100%, you'll get there. I'm just happy because I did a positive thing with my life. It feels good.24. What had the writer done before he came to London?A. He had worked in a restaurant. B. He had been a professional coach.C. He had worked in a small company. D. He had done nothing but travel around.25. How was the writer's life at first in London?A. Exciting. B. Scary. C. Dull. D. Satisfying.26. What influenced the writer's life most?A. Joining the boxing team. B. Losing the competition in Milan.C. Suffering from a motorcycle crash. D. Being the head coach of the team.27. What does the writer intend to convey in the last paragraph?A. Life is not all roses. B. Difficulties make him stronger.C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Devotion makes him successful.CI start every summer with the best of intentions: to attack one big book from the past, a classic that I was supposed to have read when young and ambitious. Often the pairings of books and settings have been purely accidental: “Moby Dick” on a three-day cross-country train trip; “The Magic Mountain” in a New England beachside cottage with no locks on the doors, no telephones or televisions in the rooms, and little to do beyond row on the salt pond. Attempting “The Man Without Qualities” on a return to Hawaii, my native state, however, was less fruitful: I made it through one and a quarter volumes (冊(cè)), then decided that I’d got the point and went swimming instead. But this summer I find myself at a loss. I’m not quite interested in Balzac, say, or “Tristram Shandy.” There’s always “War and Peace,” which I’ve covered some distance several times, only to get bogged down in the “War” part, set it aside for a while, and realize that I have to start over from the beginning again, having forgotten everyone’s name and social rank. How appealing to simply fall back on a favorite—once more into “The Waves” or “Justine,” which feels almost like cheating, too exciting and too much fun to properly belong in serious literature. And then there’s Stendhal’s “The Red and the Black”, which happens to be the name of my favorite cocktail (雞尾酒) of the summer, created by Michael Cecconi at Savoy and Back Forty. It is easy to drink, and knocking back three or four seems like such a delightful idea. Cecconi’s theory: “I take whatever’s fresh at the greenmarket and turn it into liquid. “The result is a pure shot of afternoon in the park, making one feel cheerful and peaceful all at once, lying on uncut grass with eyes shut, sun beating through the lids ...28. What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph?A. He has a cottage in New England.    B. He shows talents for literature.C. He enjoys reading when traveling.   D. He admires a lot of great writers.29. What do the underlined words “get bogged down” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Get confused.    B. Be carried away.    C. Be interrupted.    D. Make no progress.30. Why does the author say reading his favorite books feels like cheating?A. He finishes them quickly.    B. He should read something serious.C. He barely understands them.  D. He has read them many times before.31. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. The Books of Summer      B. My Summer HolidaysC. To Read or Not to Read    D. It’s Never Too Late to ReadDA new study, published in Psychological Science, finds that people who think they can learn from their mistakes have a different brain reaction to mistakes than people who think intelligence is fixed. “One big difference between people who think intelligence is malleable (可塑的) and those who think intelligence is fixed is how they respond to mistakes,” says Jason S. Moser, of Michigan State University. Studies have found that people who think intelligence is malleable say things like, “When the going gets tough, I put in more effort.” or “If I make a mistake, I try to learn and figure it out.” On the other hand, people who think that they can't get smarter will not take opportunities to learn from their mistakes. This can be a problem in school. For example, a student who thinks her intelligence is fixed will think it's not worth bothering to try harder after she fails a test. For this study, Moser and his colleagues gave participants a task that was easy to make a mistake on. They were supposed to identify the middle letter of a five-letter series like “MMMMM”, “MMNMM” or “NNMNN”. Sometimes the middle letter was the same as the other four, and sometimes it was different. While doing the task, the participants wear a cap on his or her head that records electrical activity in the brain. When someone makes a mistake, their brain makes two quick signals: an initial response that indicates something has gone wrong—the “Oh, crap” response, as Moser calls it—and a follow-up signal that indicates an attempt to correct the mistake. A bigger second signal was displayed in the participants who were better able to recover from making a mistake—that is, those who believed that they could learn from such a mistake—than in the participants who had negative feelings about a mistake and believed that their failure was due to their own shortcomings. “This research might help us understand why exactly the two types of individuals show different behaviors after mistakes and could help in training people to believe that they can work harder and learn more, by showing how their brain is reacting to mistakes,” Moser says.32Why won't some people learn from their mistakes?ATheir brain doesn't react to mistakes.BThey don't think they can do better.CTheir brain doesn't deal with mistakes.DThey don't think they have made a mistake.33What was the purpose of the five-letter series?ATo make the participants make a mistake.BTo test the participants' ability to identify letters.CTo help the participants to identify the middle letter.DTo train the participants to be careful with mistakes.34What happened in the brain of those with negative feelings about a mistake?AThere was no follow-up signal.BThere were a few follow-up signals.CThere was a smaller follow-up signal.DThere was a bigger follow-up signal.35Which of the following can be the best title for the text?AAvoiding Mistakes Is PossibleBHow You Respond to Mistakes MattersCWhy There Are Brain Signals After a MistakeDBrain Reactions to Mistakes Show Intelligence第二節(jié)(共5小題:每小題2. 5, 滿分12. 5分)    閱讀下面短文, 從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。The guy who tried to edit EnglishThe English vocabulary is not only huge, but also full of words that mean practically(幾乎) the same thing- Get, obtain, acquire. Shine, gleam, glow, sparkle. ____36____. That was the thinking of a British writer named C. K. Ogden, who in the 1930s proposed (提議) a new form of English with a vocabulary of just 850 words. He called the project Basic English ____37____. Ogden arrived at his 850-word list through experimentation, rephrasing texts over and over until he was satisfied. The words he finally included were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete. ____38____. Because any verbal idea could be expressed with a small number of “operators”---words like come, go, get, take, have, make, be, and do. Ogden argued that most verbs were unnecessary. In Basic English, “eat” is “have a meal” and “forget” is “go from memory”.Winston Churchill was a fan of the concept as a way to get foreigners to speak English, and he encouraged the BBC to use it. ____39____. Roosevelt, who expressed mild interest, joked that Churchill's famous speech about offering his “blood, toil, tears, and sweat” to his country wouldn't have been so exciting if he “had been able to offer the British people only blood, work, eye water, and face water, which I understand is the best that Basic English can do with five famous words.”____40____. Churchill didn't use it either. When seeking to express ourselves, we don't necessarily need fewer words; we need the right words. So it's to our benefit to have a large supply on hand.A. Do we really need them all?B. How many words are there in English?C. Ogden himself didn't actually use Basic English.D. Plenty of seemingly basic words did not make the list at all.E. He also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to promote it.F. He believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.G. Despite attention from world leaders, Basic English never got very far off the drawing board.部分語(yǔ)言運(yùn)用(共兩節(jié),滿分30分)第一節(jié)(共15小題:每小題1滿分15分)    閱讀下面短文, 從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。Alina’s life as an angel of love began in middle school, when, in the planting club of her school, she learned how to grow eggplants(茄子).From then on, she was___41___in growing the eggplants. But I was recently in a situation where I was SO ready to give up.It started last week when my friend Ollie and I were helping his grandmother Mary to carry boxes from her garage to her car for the homeless shelter rummage sale (義賣).At the sight of a big old trunk (行李箱),we asked Mary what was inside. But she told us that as she had lost the key, she had to find a master locksmith to figure it out. "Let me have a try!" said Ollie. “I bet I can open that lock in two minutes flat! Maybe there's a treasure inside, like gold or diamonds or an ancient map!"Mary smiled. "I'll tell you what. If you two treasure hunters can open this trunk, you can have it, along with whatever is inside."Ollie got a tool kit and we set out to open the lock. But he definitely lost that bet. Those two minutes turned into two hours, with no luck at all. We had tried every tool in the kit, but the lock wouldn't move slightly.“It's no use." Ollie sighed. "I guess we have to give up."“But we can't give up!" I said. "What about 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"?"Ollie shook his head. "Unless you know a magical key fairy, we're never getting this unlocked."Just then, my little brother Tex showed up. He showed great interest in the trunk. "It looks like an upside-down boat! Can I turn it over and pretend I'm sailing in the ocean?""Sure," Ollie replied. "It's no good for anything else."“Ahoy!" Tex said, climbing on top after Ollie and I turned it over. “I’m the captain!” He giggled as he jumped up and down. And right then, a screw (螺絲) from a hinge (鉸鏈) came loose and rolled to the floor.注意:1、續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;2、請(qǐng)按如下格式在相應(yīng)的位置作答。Paragraph 1:“That's it!
