一、閱讀理解
The following top places that are worth visiting in China are recommended on the tourism website.
Gannan
Located in south western Gansu province and the northeast of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Gannan has both Tibetan culture and spectacular plateau (高原) landscape. With the average altitude of 3, 000 meters above sea level, you can experience Tibetan culture and enjoy the plateau scenery, grand grasslands, Tibetan villages, unique mountain peaks, and hidden wonderlands without the risk of altitude sickness in October.
Yading
Yading, a place where you can gain insight into the Tibetan minority culture, can be available via Daocheng. The golden fall colors here are splendid. The red bushes of Hongcaodi combined with the yellow leaves under the clear blue sky are believed to exhibit the colors of heaven. The temples in these mountains represent the local Buddhist culture.
Kaili
Kaili is one of the best places as a base for exploring minority cultures. In Kaili, the museum, the Sunday market, and the villages nearby with their unique culture and architecture are all worth a visit. It is said that in Kaili“grand festivals occur there every three days, while minor ones occur every day.” Autumn is a perfect season for outdoor activities, when you can enjoy the flesh air and cool weather.
Mongolia Autonomous Region
October is a great time to visit Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. At this time, travelers can go to the quiet Ejina to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the area’s unique populous Euphratica Forest (胡楊林). The particularity of its geographical position has blessed Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with rich travel resources including plains, deserts, sparkling lakes, and massive herds of cattle and sheep. You can even experience the Mongols’ ancient sporting traditions like horse racing and wrestling.

In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale surveys about how Americans spend their time.
The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being—but only up to a point. People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who’d had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.
“While too little time is bad, having more time is not always better,”said Marissa Sharif, an assistant professor of marketing at The Wharton School and lead author of the paper, in a press release. Of course, most people know that being too busy can cause stress. But the new study is not the first to question whether more free time will actually make people as happy as they believe it will. Experts note, for example, that some adults struggle with the “retirement blues”, which can be due to a lack of stimulation and structure among other things.
“Sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities. Study participants believed theft well-being would suffer if they spend the free time unproductively.
“Of course, what feels ‘productive’ is up to you. If watching two hours of ‘Real Housewives’ in your free time increases your happiness, you should do that. The point of all of this is self-care,not shame. In other words, how people use their free time matters.” Sharif added.
4.What feeling can be inferred from “retirement blues”?
A.Thrilled. B.Depressed.
C.Amazed. D.Disappointed.
5.Why did the researchers conduct the experiments?
A.To prove people’s attitude towards free time matters.
B.To argue which survey has the convincing finding.
C.To make participants spend their spare time wisely.
D.To tell people less free time can actually cause stress.
6.What does the underlined word “productive” in Para. 5 refer to?
A.Helping you reduce unnecessary stress.
B.Finishing more work within fixed time.
C.Making you feel good about yourself.
D.Ensuring you to take good care of yourself.
7.What’s the text mainly about?
A.“Sweet spot” is concerned with people’s well-being.
B.More free time enables people to be much happier.
C.Productive activities make people save more time.
D.Proper spare time boosts people’s sense of happiness.
In August 2020, Kate Wilson, a 16-year-old from Shrewsbury, posted on the social media video platform TikTok a series of sentences from books she had read. Set to a piece of soft music, the short video plays out as Wilson holds up copies of the books. “You have been the last dream of my soul.” from A Tale of Two Cities. “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” from Wuthering Heights. It has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.
These posts, called BookTok, can attract millions of views, and light an appreciation of books in young readers again. “I started reading again after six years when I came across BookTok for the first time last October,” says Mireille Lee, 15.
Adam Silvera’s 2017 novel They Both Die at the End is one of the books to have benefited from the BookTok effect. In March, it shot to the top of the teen fiction charts, selling more than 4, 000 copies a week. The book has sold more than 200, 000 copies in the UK after thousands of posts about it.
Publishers are watching with interest. Publisher Horrox says, “There’s something about the fact that it is under a minute. People who are consuming this content watch a 32-second video and someone’s like: ‘This book has romance, and it’s really heartbreaking. Thankfully, it’s only a fiction.’ And then the viewers think: ‘Oh, OK, those are all things that I’m interested in. I’ll go buy it.’” By December 2020, Wilson was being contacted regularly by publishers, who had realized that TikTok “really does sell books”.
Jenny is 22, and says, “I thought TikTok was ridiculous last year before the first lockdown. I really did think it was just for 14-year-olds, but BookTok is such a lovely community. There are people who like the same books as me, and I can talk about the books that I like. It just seems a little bit magical.”
8.Why does the author mention the story of Kate Wilson?
A.To make a prediction. B.To clarify Tiktok.
C.To present some posts. D.To introduce BookTok.
9.What do we know about the book They Both Die at the End?
A.It is fiction intended merely for children.
B.It has become the bestseller in the UK.
C.It has made profits from the posts on TikTok.
D.Over 200, 000 copies have been sold worldwide.
10.What can be inferred from what Publisher Horrox said?
A.People like to advertise on TikTok.
B.TikTok is the best platform to sell books.
C.BookTok videos are short but very effective.
D.Publishers started to contact Wilson regularly.
11.What is Jenny’s attitude towards BookTok?
A.Approving. B.Critical.
C.Objective. D.Uncaring.
Every year around the world some 2. 2 million books are published. For most of these authors the writing process has relatively been unchanged since Mark Twain’s day in the late 19th century. Plot outlines and ideas are written down to be deciphered (解讀), developed and refined over time.
These days, however, technology is increasingly making the life of an author a little easier. For Michael Green, a novelist, the need to use technology to simplify and streamline the writing process came when he was in the middle of writing his first book.
“I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about being able to keep track of it all. That’s when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different pieces.” The end result was that Mr. Green created Lynit, a digital platform that helps authors visualize, plan and weave (編織) together the various elements—such as characters, plots, themes and key events. Mr. Green says that many novelists begin their work with merely a general idea of a plot or a particular character. With Lynit he says that the process of adding to this initial idea is simplified.
Experts, however, still caution against being overdependent on technologies aimed at helping writers.
“Technology can also be distracting (令人分心的), particularly if you’re one step away from social media, or jumping down a research hole,” says Melissa Haveman, a writer and author coach. “A quick five minutes can sometimes lead to hours of lost writing time. Authors can sometimes fall into the trap of trying everything in the hope that it will be the magic piece, which really just turns into another distraction.”
Yet Michael Green says he believes technology will become even more outstanding as a new generation of writers becomes more outstanding. “What I'm finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they’re looking for technology to give them guidance,” he says, “They see it as a tool to learn and grow with, rather than extra work.”
12.What does the underlined word “refined” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Improved. B.Concluded.
C.Formatted. D.Exchanged.
13.What inspired Michael Green to create Lynit?
A.Helping authors develop ideas. B.Solving complicated problems.
C.Recording all his documents. D.Simplifying authors’ initial ideas.
14.What does Melissa Haveman think of “technology”?
A.It helps one become more social. B.It is necessary for researches.
C.It is time-and-attention consuming. D.It leads to the authors’ disappointment.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Lynit—a New Platform for Writers.
B.Michael Green—A Pioneer in Technology.
C.Technology—Wherever It Leads the World.
D.Technology—A New Tool for Generation Z.
二、七選五
Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go. They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what’s happening around them. 16. Outside life is shut out. So are you one of “them”?
For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. 17. What’s even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says:“I'm not available for chatting at the moment.”
Suppose you’re at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns up. At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration. 18. Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.
19. It’s probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume on their MP3 player, smile and say “Yes, Mum.” Problem solved.
Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears, but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new high-tech instrument. We’ll be in a virtual world, communicating with everyone else,as we like. In this world,we will all be permanently plugged in. 20. And they are changing our social habits along the way.
In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being a slave to it! It’s so strange—suddenly. I don’t feel like wearing my earphones anymore.
A.Our instruments are changing quickly.
B.I also have wires hanging from my ears.
C.In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.
D.I don’t have to deal with the noise from the environment.
E.After all,I am listening to my favourite music and would rather not be disturbed.
F.They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal “digital noise reduction systems”.
G.Listening to music through earphones is one of the perfect ways to ignore such interruptions.

Tess was a precocious (早熟的) eight-year-old girl when she heard her parents talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money to cover the doctor’s bills.
Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation“Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar and poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Then she slipped out the back door with all her money and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster.
No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages.” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist answered impatiently.

【分析】
本文是說明文。文章介紹了今天的從們喜歡戴著耳機(jī)“躲”在自己世界里的原因和好處,但同時(shí)也可能因此變成科技“奴隸”。
16.
上文“They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what’s happening around them. (他們帶著自己的“泡泡”四處走動(dòng),有時(shí)都不知道周圍發(fā)生了什么)”講戴著耳機(jī)的人就像是藏在“泡泡”里,不知道周圍的事情,F(xiàn)項(xiàng)“Listening to music through earphones is one of the perfect ways to ignore such interruptions. (用耳機(jī)聽音樂是忽略這些干擾的最佳方法之一)”說明其原因,因?yàn)榇髦鷻C(jī)聽音樂可以讓人忽略周圍的干擾,且其中“such interruptions”與上文“what’s happening around them”相照應(yīng),同時(shí),下文“Outside life is shut out.(外部環(huán)境被拒之門外)”可知,是F項(xiàng)的結(jié)果,與前文構(gòu)成順承關(guān)系。故選F項(xiàng)。
17.
根據(jù)下文“What’s even better...(更好的是……)”可知,下文與設(shè)空句之間是遞進(jìn)關(guān)系,設(shè)空句也應(yīng)講戴著耳機(jī)聽音樂,帶著自己的“泡泡”四處走動(dòng)的好處,D項(xiàng)“I don’t have to deal with the noise from the environment.(我不需要應(yīng)對(duì)來(lái)自環(huán)境的噪音) ”說帶著自己的“泡泡”就不需要應(yīng)對(duì)來(lái)自環(huán)境的噪音,符合語(yǔ)境。故選D項(xiàng)。
18.
上文“At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration.(在這個(gè)關(guān)鍵的時(shí)刻,最輕微的干擾都會(huì)擾亂你的注意力)”提出了一個(gè)生活中的問題,G項(xiàng)“Listening to music through earphones is one of the perfect ways to ignore such interruptions.(用耳機(jī)聽音樂是忽略這些干擾的最佳方法之一)”與其下文“Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that ‘Go away!’ signal. (另外,掛在你耳朵上的耳機(jī)線一定會(huì)發(fā)出“走開!”的信號(hào)) ”一起講戴著耳機(jī)可以幫助你解決問題,不受干擾,下文是上文問題的解決辦法。故選G項(xiàng)。
19.
下文“It’s probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume on their MP3 player, smile and say ‘Yes, Mum.’ Problem solved.(這可能是成長(zhǎng)階段的一部分,他們想要忽略整個(gè)家庭。當(dāng)他們的媽媽給他們講為什么他們應(yīng)該做作業(yè)時(shí),他們可以把MP3播放器的音量調(diào)大,微笑著說“是的,媽媽。”。問題解決了)”講在家庭里孩子如何用戴著耳機(jī)聽音樂來(lái)逃避父母的說教,解釋了C項(xiàng)“In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.(在家庭環(huán)境中,青少年喜歡這些耳機(jī)線)”中孩子們?cè)诩抑邢矚g戴著耳機(jī)的原因,上下文構(gòu)成因果關(guān)系。故選C項(xiàng)。
20.
根據(jù)指代關(guān)系和下文“And they are changing our social habits along the way.(在這個(gè)過程中,它們也在改變我們的社會(huì)習(xí)慣)”可知,設(shè)空句中需明確下文中“they”和“along the way”的指代內(nèi)容,A 項(xiàng)“Our instruments are changing quickly.(我們的設(shè)備正在快速變化)”中“Our instruments”和“are changing quickly”即下文“they”和“along the way ”指代對(duì)象,上下文相互呼應(yīng)。故選A項(xiàng)。
