His parents fled from South Sudan and its decades-long civil war. For 22 of his 24 years of life, he grew up there, with no electricity. When Mayen saw a laptop at a registration station for the refugee camp, he told his mother he wanted one. She saved up for three years to buy one for him. When she gave it to him in 2013 , he burst into tears. He took it to an Internet café, charged his computer and discovered the joy of playing games. He didn't know how video games were made. But he knew in his heart he wanted to learn to code.He needed instruction. A friend gave him coding tutorials as well as a copy of video game: Grand Theft Auto, which encourages players to take violent actions. But as a child born in a violent war, Mayenthought about how to create a game that could inspire peace. He taught himself to make games and formed his own company, Junub Games.
"I realized the power of gaming," he said. "Games can be helpful for peace and conflict resolution."
With the inspiration, he created a game called Salaam (an Arabic word that means peace), about protecting communities from destruction. Mayen shared the game on his Facebook page, and that's when he started attracting international attention. In 2018, Mayen appeared at The Game Awards in Los Angeles, where he was named a Global Gaming Citizen for using gaming to promote "positivity" and community. His vision is to use the game to inspire empathy for refugees. He's working on a charitable component so that when players make in-app purchases of extra resources in the game, a portion would go to an organization at a refugee camp. In this way, they're supporting actual refugees' lives.Mayen now lives in Washington, D.C. working with a small team on a virtual reality game. "Maybe one day, my dream will come true, making the biggest video game studio that makes games for peace," Mayen said.21. Mayen's journey to becoming a game developer can be described as______________.
A. rare and amazingB. smooth and lucky
C. rocky and roughD. painful and tearful22. What inspired Mayen to make the game Salaam?

D. Games' function as a charitable activity.23. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Man's Struggle for Peace.
B. From Refugee Camp to Washington D.C.
C. A Man's Road to Success.
D. From Refugee to Game Developer.BIndia has the world's worst air pollution. Home to 21 of the world's 30 most polluted cities, its poisonous air kills more than one million people each year.Being the world's second largest brick producer, India's brick kilns (磚窋) account for of black carbon emissions globally. Architect Tejas Sidnal was astonished to discover the construction industry's role in the pollution crisis. "That was a crazy eye opener," he says. "As architects, we are responsible for so much air pollution."Determined to make construction more sustainable and tackle India's air pollution, Sidnal launched Carbon Craft Design in 2019. The startup takes black carbon extracted from polluted air and upcycles it to make stylish, handcrafted building tiles (瓷磚).To create the carbon tiles, Carbon Craft Design, together with Graviky Labs, uses a filter device to capture carbon soot (碳黑) from tail gas and fossil fuel generators, removes pollutants such as heavy metals and dust from the soot, and gives the purified carbon to Carbon Craft Design in powder form. The company then mixes the captured carbon with cement and marble waste from quarries to produce monochromatic tiles. The company aims to ensure each tile contains at least waste material. It sells the tiles to architects and retailers (零售商) for per square meter-a high price compared to regular tiles. As the company expands production, Sidnal hopes to lower prices and produce a cheaper range of carbon tiles. "We want to hit the affordable sector," he says. "Sustainability is not only for the elite (精英)."Since launching its first tiles a year ago, Carbon Craft Design's customers have included global fashion brands and architecture firms in India. In November 2020, an Adidas store in Mumbai covered the walls and the floor with its carbon tiles. Inquiries from in and out of India came flooding in.Architect Manan Gala describes the carbon tile as a "winner", which, apart from being sustainable, has better strength than conventional cement tiles due to the carbon content, and the raw and rustic feel adds to the overall charm.
What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Something shocking.B. Something impossible.
C. Something ridiculous.D. Something unavoidable.
25 . What can we learn from paragraph 4 ?
A. The price of each tile.
B. The way to produce the carbon tiles.
C. The purpose of purifying the air.
D. The reason for producing the carbon tiles.
26. Carbon tiles have advantages in the following aspects except in______________.
A. strengthB. sustainabilityC. appearanceD. priceCStar Wars fans would be familiar with the relationship between humans and droids (機器人) in the movies, like Lando Calrissian who risked his life to rescue a female droid L3-37. In the real world, a humanoid robot, Sophia, was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia. Increasingly, people are ready to see robots as beyond mere metal and plastics and instead as humans like companions, friends and even children. Given this phenomenon, I believe it is necessary to consider giving robots certain rights humans enjoy.Experts have argued it's appropriate to consider if they should have human rights. Sophia has a humanlike face and use artificial intelligence to respond to speech and express emotions. Does it not deserve the right to be loved and respected? In 2014 , a Canadian robot, hitchBOT had his head cut off while hitch-hiking in the United States, causing a massive grief from the public. This will therefore set us on the path to consider ethical (倫理道徳的) issues concerning robots.A more persuasive reason for this is the protection of social values. We should certainly stop a young child from kicking or tearing a toy robot apart not that it is an expensive toy but, more importantly that the robot resembles a real life. Allowing the abuse of such a robot may lead a child to think that abusing a live pet such as a dog is acceptable. Giving robots certain rights will ensure that social standards are set and keep children, and even adults, from engaging in undesirable behavior.Still, many have strongly argued that robots are not flesh and blood, unlike human beings; however complicated they may be, they are still machines. It is therefore ridiculous to treat them as living beings. While there is some truth, with advances in technology, it is a matter of time before sentient (有感覺能力的) robots become a reality and we would have to consider granting them rights. In conclusion, deciding whether robots deserve human rights is by no means an easy task, but now is the time to seriously consider the possibility and our moral and legal obligations towards them since it is not ethical to deny rights and protection to sentient beings or loved ones.
27. Why does the author mention L3-37 and Sophia in paragraph 1?
A. To provide examples of humanlike robots.
B. To illustrate the success of the movie.
C. To introduce the topic of the passage.
D. To stress the importance of AI robots.28.What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Stopping harming robots.
B. Setting social standards.
C. Granting robots human rights.
D. Creating lifelike robots.29.What's the main topic of the passage?
A. How should we see robots?
B. Are robots humans or machines?
C. Why should robots be given human rights?
D. Should robots be granted human rights?30.How does the author support his idea?
A. By narrating facts.
C. By making comparisons.
B. By analyzing causes.
D. By stating reasons.第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。Hollywood is looking East. We had a rented cottage at the foot of the mountain by a lake. And my niece Susan, aged 12, also joined us.On the first day, abundant items kept everyone occupied: picnicking, canoeing, shooting. When night fell, we sat around the campfire singing and dancing with other vacationers, all having a great day.Nevertheless, on the second day, I noticed Susan constantly checking her screen, busily texting. That day, she stayed indoors glued to her phone, playing Axe Climber (一款登山游戲). Then, I had an idea, announcing, "Tomorrow, we'll hike to the top of the Stone Mountains."
Hearing this, Susan shrugged, as if to say, "Why?"
Eyes fixed on Susan, I continued, "Put your phone aside and climb a real mountain, OK?"
"Well," Susan responded reluctantly, "the Axe Climber is moving up to the final level, so I'll not be available tomorrow.""Susan, that's not the actual wilderness experience. I hiked a lot. It's greater fun," Nels said persuasively.
"Sounds more like punishment," she mumbled. "I hate sweating."
"Never have you been on a mountaintop. Susan, have a go this time, and you are sure to love the feeling and pleasure it brings."
She finally nodded unwillingly, "Fine, I'll give it a try."
I smiled. Anyway, she agreed. The next morning, we awakened to the sound of birds singing. It was a nice day with the sun shining mildly and clouds floating leisurely. "A perfect day for hiking," 1 said. "I will go, Uncle," Susan replied mechanically.Packing bread, bottled water and camera into the backpack, we set out for our destination. Against the blue sky, a rough trail wound its way to the top of the mountain."I still don't think it's a good idea," Susan complained, frowning."No pains, no gains! Come on!" I encouraged.

At first, she went up at a brisk pace. However, the higher we climbed, the steeper the trail became. It was not long before we began sweating. “I can’t walk any further!” Susan complained breathlessly. She was thirsty, sweaty and exhausted. Handing her a bottle, I suggested taking a break. Minutes later, we continued our way. Susan followed, falling further and further behind. “ Hold on! We’re almost to the top!” “ Susan, you’re a real climber!” Both Nels and I cheered for her. Gasping, Susan took every step with great effort, progressing slowly but firmly. I was proud she didn’t quit. Paragraph 2An hour later, we made it to the top. “How awesome!” Susan yelled with wild joy. Falling leaves, red, yellow and orange, danced gracefully in the air. Below us, miles of fields and hills stretched out as far as we could see. “ We’re on the top of the world! It feels so good!” Susan was enchanted, immersed in the pleasure never experienced. Resting on the rocks, we felt the refreshing breeze brushing our cheeks. “Anyone still miss her phone?” I joked. Susan rolled her eyes, laughing out loud, “ Remember to call me next time you go hiking!” I felt relieved and rewarded. This hiking was worth all the pains.
