In 1823, a yung wman nticed a strange fssil n a beach near Lyme Regis, England. She dug ut the bnes and had them carried t her hme. She carefully arranged the skeletn n a table. Then she saw smething extrardinary. The creature's neck was a meter lng mre than half the length f its bdy. It was unlike any animal living n Earth.
Even at a yung age, Mary Anning had a talent fr sptting "curies" fssils. Her father died in 1810, leaving her family in debt, s Mary began selling her fssils t cllectrs. A year later, aged just 12 , she made her first majr discvery---a crcdile-like skull with a lng skeletn. It turned ut t be a sea creature that lived lng ag. Named ichthysaur, r "fish-lizard", it was the first extinct animal knwn t science.
Fssil hunting brught in mney, but it was a dangerus ccupatin. One day, a rck fall killed her dg and almst buried Mary. Despite the dangers, she cntinued t lk fr new finds. The lng-necked fssil she uncvered in 1823 was anther lng-dead sea reptile. Knwn as a plesisaur, it wuld inspire legends---including that f the Lch Ness Mnster.
Mary was nt nly a skilled fssil hunter, she als carefully examined and recrded her finds. Hwever, she received little credit frm ther scientists. Only ne f her scientific writings was published in her lifetime, in 1839. She was als nt allwed t jin Lndn's Gelgical Sciety, as nly men culd becme members.
Mary Anning died in 1847, but her cntributins have nt been frgtten. Her finds are nw displayed in museums in Lndn and Paris. The beach near her hme is a UNESCO Wrld Heritage Site, knwn as the Jurassic Cast. Her life cntinues t inspire visitrs hping t find their wn fssil wnders. Accrding t Britain's Natural Histry Museum, Mary Anning was "the greatest fssil hunter the wrld has ever knwn". She was als a scientist wh changed the way we think abut life n Earth.
21. The wrd "curies" in paragraph 2 means ____________.
A.beautiful. B. huge. C. cmmn. D. unusual
22. Which f the fllwing is true abut Mary Anning?

A rbt the size f a large bulldzer (推土機) mves alng the bttm f the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金屬的) rck and sft mud. The stuff travels up a lng pipe t a ship, where wrkers and machinery separate ut the rck and thrw the mud back int the cean. This is a mining peratin. The rck cntains a mixture f metals, including nes called rare earth metals. Peple use these materials t make batteries and electrnics like cmputers and phnes.
Deep-sea mining hasn't happened yet. But it prbably will ccur within the next decade. N cuntry wns any part f the deep sea. S an rganizatin called the Internatinal Seabed Authrity (ISA) decides wh is allwed t mine there. The ISA has allwed 29 rganizatins t explre the deep sea and make plans fr mining. One cmpany plans t begin mining in the year 2027.
Scientists and envirnmentalists, thugh, warn that mining culd destry deep-sea ecsystem. In 1989 , eclgist Hjalmar Thiel carried ut a test. His team searched the seaflr f the Pacific Ocean, in a spt with lts f the metallic rcks that miners want. They didn't actually cllect any f the rcks. But they disturbed the mud, just as a mining peratin wuld. The plume (飄升之物) f mud fell back dwn ver the cean flr burying creatures living there. As f 2015, the area they disturbed had nt recvered. Signs f the search are still there. Spnges (海綿動物), crals, and ther animals have nt mved back in. That means mining culd have harmful, lng-lasting cnsequences fr deep cean life. Scientists want t understand the deep sea better befre disturbing it.
Leaving the deep sea alne sunds great, but peple need thse metals. "Mines n land are sn ging t run ut," gelgist Steven Sctt f the University f Trnt tld Smithsrian Magazine, "Every electrnic device in the wrld has rare earth metals in it... we need raw resurces." New energy technlgies including slar and wind pwer and electric cars, rely n these metals as well. We may need t mine them frm the sea in rder t switch t greener energy surces.
24. Why is a deep-sea mining peratin carried ut?
A. T test the functin f the underwater rbt.
B. T separate the rck frm the mud.
C. T btain rare earth metals.
D. T study the elements f the deep-sea mud.
25. What can we learn abut ISA accrding t the passage?
A. It pssesses the wnership f the whle deep sea.
B. It may help the deep-sea explratin carried ut scientifically.
C. It can make the deep-sea natural resurces shared fairly.
D. It wrks ut mining plans fr different cuntries.
26. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Peple depend n rare earth metals fr car prductin.
B. We mustn't mine anything frm the deep sea.
C. Deep-sea resurces will replace thse n land.
D. Rare earth metals help us develp green energy.

Every summer, the calls f thusands f swamp sparrws can be heard acrss Nrth America's wetlands. These little brwn birds knw nly a few sngs, but they knw them very well. In fact, their musical set list prbably hasn't changed much fr centuries.
Like humans, baby swamp sparrws learn t cmmunicate by cpying adults. Frm a yung age, they learn t cpy, r mimic, sngs sung by their elders. "Swamp sparrws very rarely make mistakes when they learn their sngs," says bilgist Rbert Lachlan. In fact, their mimiery is s accurate that the music changes little between generatins.
Just like children, the sparrws dn't remember every sng they hear, Lachlan says. "They dn't just learn sngs at randm; they pick up cmmner sngs rather than rarer sngs." In ther wrds, they learn sngs they hear mst ften. It's an example f a strategy that scientists call cnfrmist bias. Until recently, this learning ability was thught t be special nly t humans.
Between 2008 and 2009, Lachlan's research team recrded the calls f 615 male swamp sparrws acrss the nrtheastern United States. The researchers used cmputer sftware t break each sng int a cllectin f ntes, r syllables. They then measured the differences between the tunes.
The research revealed that nly 2 percent f male sparrws sang a different sng frm the standard tune. The cmbinatin f accurate mimicry and cnfrmist bias allws the birds t create traditins that last fr centuries. "With thse tw ingredients tgether, yu end up with traditins that are really stable," says Lachlan. "The sng-types that yu hear in the marshes (沔地) f Nrth America tday may well have been there 1,000 years ag." Lachlan's study is als amng the first t measure the lngevity f sng traditins within a bird species.
The findings are really exciting, says scientist Andrew Farnswrth. He hpes that future research will evlve frm these studies. Fr example, scientists may be able t identify hw ther animals are able t preserve their cultural traditins. "Seeing the ptential fr it in ther rganisms is super cl," says Farnswrth.
27. What d we knw abut Lachlan's research?
A. The calls f 615 female swamp sparrws were recrded.
B. Accurate mimicry allws the birds t create the centuries-lng traditins.
C. It aimed t study swamp sparrws' learning ability.
D. Cmputer technlgy helped a lt during the research.
28. Which f the fllwing is an example f cnfrmist bias?
A. A new slang wrd becmes ppular with a grup f teenagers.
B. A dg learns t d a trick because its wner rewards it regularly.
C. A student memrizes histrical events fr a histry exam.
D. A student lves singing and jins the schl chrus.
29. What is Andrew Farnswrth's attitude twards the findings?
A. Indifferent. B. Negative. C. Psitive. D. Cnservative.

A. The Amazing Lifespan f Swamp Sparrws.
B. The Traditinal Musical Set List f Swamp Sparrws.
