1972年6月5日聯(lián)合國在瑞典首都斯德哥爾摩召開了聯(lián)合國人類環(huán)境會(huì)議,會(huì)議通過了 《人類環(huán)境宣言》,并提出將每年的6月5曰定為“世界環(huán)境日”。同年10月,第27屆聯(lián)合國大會(huì)通過決議接受了該建議。世界環(huán)境日(Wrld Envirnment Day)是聯(lián)合國促進(jìn)全球環(huán)境意識、 提高政府對環(huán)境問題的注意并采取行動(dòng)的主要媒 介之一。

聯(lián)合國系統(tǒng)和各國政府每年都在6月5日 這一天開展各項(xiàng)活動(dòng)來宣傳與強(qiáng)調(diào)保護(hù)和改 善人類環(huán)境的重要性。聯(lián)合國環(huán)境規(guī)劃署每年6月5日選擇一個(gè)成員國舉行“世界環(huán)境日”紀(jì)念活動(dòng),發(fā)表《環(huán)境現(xiàn)狀的年度報(bào)告》及表彰“全球500佳”,并根據(jù)當(dāng)年的世界主要環(huán)境問題及環(huán)境特點(diǎn),有針對性地制定每年的“世界環(huán)境日”主題。
世界環(huán)境日的意義在于提醒全世界注意地球狀況和人類活動(dòng)對環(huán)境的危害。要求聯(lián)合國系統(tǒng)和各國政府在這一天開展各種活動(dòng)來強(qiáng)調(diào)保護(hù)和改善人類環(huán)境的重要性。
