1. Describe phts n page 34.
(1) Ask the students what natural disasters they knw abut. Write these examples n the bard and discuss them.
(2) Read the vcabulary in the bx, and explain difficult wrds.
(3) Ask vlunteer students t read the sentences alud t the class.
(4) Instruct learners t wrk independently and match the phts (a–d) with the descriptins (1–4).
(5) Discuss the answers as a class.
2. Listen and answer questins.
(1) Tell students that they will be listening t an interview n a prfessinal rescue team.
(2) Read with students the infrmatin in the Skill Builder.
(3) Read alud the questins as a class. Explain any unknwn terms.
(4) Instruct students t answer the questins as they listen t the interview.
3. Listen again, cmplete and decide.
(1) Explain t students that they will listen t the interview fr further details.
(2) Review the sentence frames with students and then ask them t take ntes as they listen.
(3) Check answers as a class. If needed, replay the interview.
(4) Vlunteer students read the Skill Builder bx alud.
(5) As a class discuss the difference between main ideas (MI) and details (D).
(6) In pairs students decide if the sentences cntain a main idea (MI) abut rescue attempts r a detail (D). Write the crrect letter in the brackets.
4. Pair Wrk: Ask and answer.
(1) Encurage students t imagine that they are part f the interview. What fur questins wuld yu ask based n Activity 3?
(2) Students write dwn and answer fur questins that they culd ask.
5. Listen and cmplete.
(1) Tell students that they will be listening t the secnd part f the interview n the rescue team.
(2) Read alud the table as a class. Explain any unknwn terms.
(3) Instruct students t cmplete the table as they listen t the interview.
6. Listen and imitate.
(1) Tell students that they will listen t the interview fr mre details.
(2) Read alud the rubric and the Talk Builder bx as a class. Explain any unknwn terms.
(3) Students decide whether the phrase in italics are used t maintain (M), interrupt (I) r end (E) a cnversatin.
7. Find mre plite ways t interrupt and end a cnversatin.
(1) Divide the class int small grups. Tell students t discuss situatins where they wuld need t maintain, interrupt and end a cnversatin. Explain that it can be seen as rude r disrespectful t interrupt r abruptly end a cnversatin, unless there is reasn t d s. What expressins wuld yu use in each situatin t maintain, interrupt and end a cnversatin?
(2) Students write dwn different expressins that they wuld use t interrupt r end a cnversatin.
8. Pair Wrk: Practice.
(1) Divide the class int pairs. Tell students that they will rle play the fllwing situatins in maintaining, interrupting and ending a cnversatin.
(2) Student A starts the cnversatin, rle playing as a friend wh wants t talk abut his /her wrries fr a presentatin tmrrw. Student B respnds, rle playing as the friend wh wuld rather end the cnversatin s as t catch a train.
(3) In the secnd situatin, Student A rle plays as an English teacher explaining hw t use relative prnuns t intrduce relative clauses and Student B, rle playing as a student wh desn’t understand sme wrds and wants t ask a questin.
