Lily, do you have any way of making yourself feel relaxed before a concert?  W: In my early days I was in a band and we were always telling each other jokes and  having a good laugh. ⒀But now I spend a few minutes taking calm, slow breaths.  M: And on the day of the show, do you practice everything on the stage first?  W: ⒁I always go there but just to get the feel of moving around it, making a mental note of how many steps I can take in any direction. I want songs to sound fresh when l do them, but they won't be fresh to you if you've been singing them all day.  M: What do you do after that?  W: I often go and take a seat in one of the front rows. ⒂I try to imagine myself up there later on, giving a really great performance, fans clapping and cheering, things like that. Whether or not that actually happens it certainly makes me feel I can do it, and that's the important thing. Then I go back to my dressing room, which is usually nice and quiet, and get  ready.  M: And one final question, what do you drink before you perform?  W: Well, coffee is not good for your voice because it dries out your mouth and throat.  Tea and cola are also best avoided. ⒃ But your throat can be cleared by having a glass of freshly- squeezed lemon or orange.  M: Thank you, Lily.
