Just ne kilmeter f rad wuld need three millin masks, and the plyprpylene (聚丙烯) plastic used t make single-use surgical face masks als increased the flexibility and durability f the rad.
The new material is a mixture f abut 2% trn masks, with recycled cncrete aggregate (RCA) — a material btained frm waste cncrete and ther minerals frm destryed buildings. This recycled material was fund in the study t be ideal fr tw f the fur layers generally required t create radways. Paving a kilmeter f tw-way rad with the RCA and three millin face masks wuld result in a change f 93 tns f waste frm landfills.
The final prduct then is mre resistant t wear than asphalt (瀝青), as well as being cheaper t, prvided there was a methd fr cllecting masks. The research team did a cst-analysis and fund that, at $26 per tn, the RCA was abut half the cst f mining raw materials, and as much as a third f the cst f shipping the used masks t a landfill.
The widespread applicatin wuld be ideal fr large infrastructure prjects. Fr example, Washingtn has the 11th wrst rads in terms f unaddressed repairs in the U.S. If the damaged rads in Washingtn state were repaired with the RCA/mask mixture, it wuld reuse nearly 10 billin masks, sparing American landfills hundreds f millins f tns f trash.
