M: Miss Dermott, let me start by asking you this question: Do you think, within a few years, people could work at home instead of working in offices?
W: Oh, yes. It's already happening. The communication industry has made a lot of progress in the last ten years.
M: And how do these people work? I mean, what equipment do they need to have at home?
W: Well, they need a monitor, a computer, a printer, and a telephone to connect with other computers.
M: Oh, I see. So what are some advantages of working at home?
W: Working at home, people don't have to spend a lot of time getting to and from their work places. The rush hours, as everyone knows, are the worst times of day to travel. Millions of people have to get up early to avoid the rush hours.
M: Ah, I see. What do you think the future will be like for home-workers?
W: Oh, let me tell you what might happen. In the future a British firm in London, for example, might employ clerks in Belfast, or a Paris company could have their secretaries in Spain. Most business could be done by telephone.
15. What has made working at home possible?
A. Communication industry.

A
Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he's screaming (高聲尖叫) all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird's song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has something to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
21. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds' singing is actually________.
A. an expression of happiness
B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger
D. a language of their own
However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
22. What is a bird's “territory”?
A. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
B. A place where other bird families are not accepted.
C. An area for which birds fight against each other.
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.
A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own.
23. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
B. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
C. Because they want to find outsiders around.
D. Because they want to invite more bird friends.
24. How does the writer explain birds' singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings.
B. By reporting experimental results.
C. By describing birds' daily life.
D. By telling a bird's story.
B
A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity (肥胖) rates. The study of 8,179 was reported in the British Medical Journal.
Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970,366 of the participants said they were vegetarian-although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.
Men who were vegetarian had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but reported eating fish or chicken.
Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically (統(tǒng)計(jì)地) significant after adjusting for these factors.
Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or professional qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.
Lead researcher Catharine Gale said, “The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians than adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (冠心病) in adult life.”
But Dr. Frankie Phillips, of the British Dietetic Association, said: “It_is_like_the_chicken_and_the_egg. Do people become vegetarian because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?”
25. What's the result of the research mentioned in the text?
A. Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life.
B. Children with a higher IQ are less likely to have heart disease later in life.
C. Intelligent children tend to belong to higher social class later in life.
D. Children with a healthier heart tend to have a higher IQ later in life.
根據(jù)第一段中的“people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points higher on average at the age of 10”知A項(xiàng)正確。根據(jù)“it could explain why...” 故選A項(xiàng)。
26. It was found in the research that________.
A. most of the participants became vegetarians 20 years after the IQ tests were carried out
B. vegetarians who ate fish or chicken were of similar intelligence with strict vegetarians
C. female vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians
D. vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians
根據(jù)第三段中的“There was no difference in the IQ scores between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarians but reported eating fish or chicken”可知答案。
27. Catharine Gale talked about “being vegetarians” in a(n) ________way.
A. doubtful B. favorable
C. negative D. objective
28. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Intelligence is linked to not just being a vegetarian but to many factors.
B. The rate of getting heart disease is linked to your lifestyle.
C. The link between a high IQ and being a vegetarian is still uncertain.
D. The link between a healthy heart and diet remains to be proved.
C

Healthy Habits, Healthy Body
Feeling tired lately? Has a doctor said he can't find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong with you.
Then, consider this: you might be in a state of subhealth(亞健康).
Subhealth, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease.
According to the investigation (調(diào)查) by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time.
Symptoms (征兆) include a lack of energy, depression (壓抑), slow reactions, insomnia (失眠), agitation (焦慮), and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open-air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should eat more fresh vegetables, fruits and fishes because they are rich in nutritional (營(yíng)養(yǎng)的) elements-vitamins and trace elements (微量元素)-that are important to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subhealth.

C. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should have yourself examined in foreign countries.
D. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should find out the reasons and relax yourself.

As I look back on my lifetime, I see the friends, neighbors, teachers and coaches who have meant so much to my development. I praise and admire each of them, but none could compare to my parents, from whom I learned lessons. The reason why they meant so much to me is that they carried out the lessons with care, kindness and love. I always knew that I was truly loved. They showed me their own footprints in this world and challenged me to pass the achievements they had achieved.
They taught me to be compassionate and caring to all I meet in life. One of the hardest lessons I had learned is that life isn't all about me. I need to make the most of the opportunities presented to make a difference to those I meet on life's pathway. When I stop, take the time to be still, and listen to my heart and spirit, I'm aware of my purpose in being here. It's not about my home, but do I care about the homeless? It's not about a beautiful lawn, but do I play ball with the kids and grandkids? It's not about how I take care of my body, but do I care about those in the nursing homes?
Be strong. Forgive those who have hurt you. Be brave and live for others. Don't wait for things to get better someday. Do something today. Use your talents to make the footprints in your life.

根據(jù)第一段的第二句“I praise and admire each of them, but none could compare to my parents, from whom I learned lessons.”
34. The writer thinks that the purpose of his life is to ________.
A. try to succeed in his career
B. care for those around him
C. lead a rich and comfortable life
D. face challenges bravely

___36___I guess that would have been when I was about six or seven years old, just several weeks or maybe a month before the orphanage (孤兒院) turned me into an old man.
I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like the little soldier that I had become and then I would get into one of the two straight lines and march to breakfast with the other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.
After breakfast one Saturday morning I returned to the dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful monarch butterflies.___37___
I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins through their head and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet.
___38___ I had walked many times out into the bushes, all by myself, just so the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands so I could look at them up close.
When the telephone rang, the house parent laid the large cardboard paper down on the back cement (水泥) step and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the one butterfly who he had just pinned to the large paper. ___39___ So I reached down and touched it on the wing causing one of the pins to fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away but it was still pinned by the one wing with the other straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground and just trembled.
I picked up the torn wing and the butterfly and I spat (吐唾沫) on its wing and tried to get it to stick back on so it could fly away and be free before the house parent came back.___40___

41. A. confidence B. respect
C. difficulty D. admiration
根據(jù)上文中的“The overhead light outside my door was burned out”可知,門(mén)外面頭上方的燈燒壞了,因此“我”很難找到鎖眼。故選C。
42. A. failed B. managed
C. wished D. meant
根據(jù)下文中的“I________around the wall for a light switch”可知,“我”在墻上找燈的開(kāi)關(guān),由此可推知,“我”在黑暗中找到了鎖眼,而且成功地打開(kāi)門(mén)進(jìn)了賓館房間。
43. A. touched B. looked
C. sensed D. felt
根據(jù)上文中的“The overhead light outside my door was burned out”可知,門(mén)外面的燈壞了,因此走進(jìn)房門(mén)時(shí),也一定是沒(méi)有燈光的,只能在墻上摸索著尋找燈開(kāi)關(guān)。
44. A. once B. never
C. still D. already

46. A. earlier B. later
C. lower D. upper
根據(jù)上文中的“It was really a busy day for me, and in the evening I went back to the hotel room after attending a meeting”可知,“我”是在開(kāi)完會(huì)后返回賓館的。 故選A。
47. A. light B. room
C. dark D. corner
48. A. operated B. happened
C. fired D. developed
根據(jù)下文中的“I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be able to use whatever light comes in from the________ to find another lamp.”
49. A. machine B. car
C. room D. street
根據(jù)上文中的“I switched it on,nothing________!”
50. A. wound B. made
C. forced D. lost
make one's way意為“行進(jìn)”,為固定搭配,符合語(yǔ)境,故選B。
51. A. after B. while
C. until D. since
根據(jù)下文中的“I found a desk lamp which actually________!”
52. A. helped B. worked
C. affected D. inspired

53. A. must B. shall
C. will D. can
54. A. physical B. psychological
C. electrical D. mental
故選A。
55. A. existence B. truth
C. love D. wisdom
根據(jù)下文中的“Because, for many people, the world is a dark and________place.”
56. A. complex B. friendly
C. colourful D. lonely
根據(jù)上文中的“the light that shines from people-the light of________ and faith”可知,來(lái)自他人的愛(ài)和信仰之燈的照耀,要比有形的燈更有必要,那是因?yàn)閷?duì)許多人來(lái)說(shuō),這個(gè)世界是黑暗和孤獨(dú)的。故選D。
57. A. need B. favor
C. face D. short
根據(jù)上文中的“Today someone just may be stumbling in discouragement or sadness or fear”可知,如今,有人可能正好被挫折或者悲傷或者恐懼絆倒,那么這些人是需要一些燈光的,即愛(ài)和信仰之燈。故選A。
58. A. make B. take
C. offer D. contribute
根據(jù)上文中的“So let your light shine.”
59. A. no more than B. other than
C. not more than D. rather than
根據(jù)下文中的“remember there isn't enough darkness in all the world to________the light of one small candle”可知,世界上沒(méi)有足夠的黑暗可以撲滅哪怕只是小小的蠟燭之光。 no more than意為“僅僅,只是”。
60. A. give out B. put out
C. get over D. set up
根據(jù)上文中的“And if you feel that your light is________a candle in a forest”可知,如果你感到你的燈僅僅是森林中的一支蠟燭,感覺(jué)到自己的力量小,那么請(qǐng)記住世界上沒(méi)有足夠的黑暗可以撲滅哪怕只是小小的蠟燭之光。 give out意為“發(fā)出,放出(熱、光)”;get over意為“克服,控制”;set up意為“建立”,均不符合語(yǔ)境,故排除。

Last February, I was on holiday in Beijing with my family. One morning, I was sleeping soundly while I was woken up by a suddenly cry of my sister, “It's snowing.” I got up quickly, dressed me and opened the window. Wow, I couldn't believe in my eyes. Everything including trees, roofs and grass were covered with thick snow. In distance I could see lots of cars, like small white box, moving slowly on the road. I could also see some lovely birds flying happily in the snow. How a beautiful sight! I became exciting because I had never seen snow before. In no time, I ran out with my camera and take many photos to record my first experience of snow.

One possible version:
Pressure is a common serious problem nowadays. Actually, everyone, of course, including us students, lives under pressure in life. We need a relaxation after heavy work to renew our energy.
Burying ourselves all day under piles of books is not the only way to study. More importantly, in my opinion, we should trust ourselves. A conversation with parents or teachers or good friends is an essential way to solve the problem. Apart from that, we can listen to music after class or we can even cry or shout in the open air in order to refresh ourselves.
Our teachers and parents are strict with us because they expect us to be admitted to a good university. We should face the kind of pressure. Only in this way can we face the challenge with pleasant.
