    What do you usually do at Christmas?Good morning, everyone. My topic is “What do you usually do at Christmas? “from Lesson 1 Unit 6, Grade 5. This unit is about Christmas,  related to students’ daily life, which can be divided into 4 periods: Lesson 1 activities at Christmas, lesson 2 discusses how to decorate Christmas trees, lesson3 talks about presents they got at Christmas and after-class reading-- Linda’s Christmas.Students in Grade 5 have already known about Christmas in different degrees. Almost all the students know that Christmas is a significant festival in western countries. The majority of students know the date of Christmas. Half of the students know some symbols about Christmas. However, only a few can express the activities at Christmas in English. In addition, they’ve learned the sentence pattern “What do you do at the weekend?” and the present tense in Grade 4. As a result, besides focusing on students’ ability of expressing the activities at Christmas with the sentence pattern. I’ll pay more attention to cultivate students intercultural awareness and expressing ability in real language environment by task-based teaching method, situational teaching method and I-E teaching method. In this class, students are willing to participate in the class activities. Students will be able to learn new words, sentence patterns and express what they usually do at Christmas in western countries, they will also be able to recognize the cultural differences between China and western countries, even among western countries, what’s more, they will understand the importance of getting together with the family in the significant festivals.Teaching procedureI will begin my class with a Christmas song to draw forth today’s topic. Then we’ll talk about something about Christmas by free talk which can encourage students to think actively about what they have already known about Christmas. Now students are well prepared for today’s class.Watch the video and answer the question “When is Christmas Day?” Students will be able to get a good overall perception of the text. We will be ready to learn about Christmas following Jenny. “December 25” will be learned. Then we will read the text intensively and try to find more details with the question “What do they usually do at Christmas?” By this question, today’s core points will be presented.Then students will be curious about who is Santa. He is an old man with a big bag called sack . He brings the toys in the sack. He is sitting on a sleigh pulled by seven reindeer. Books and movies on Christmas will be recommended to encourage students to learn more about Christmas.We will learn new words Santa, bring, together and sentence pattern. Thinking ability, reading ability and cultural awareness will be achieved. So far, the text is well learned.Then we will come to practice.Watch and imitate the text.Try to act the text out in roles.  Work in groups and try to summarize the text like this way. Cooperative ability, thinking ability, speaking ability and generalization ability are well trained, which can also help students fully understand the text logically.Then we will practice the dialogue orally.Different countries have different celebrations at Christmas. We will further discuss the activities at Christmas in other western countries with the sentence pattern “What do they usually do at Christmas in the US?” and so on. Try to finish the passage on the paper. In this section, thinking ability and writing ability are needed.In order to further a bigger vision, we will continue to learn the colors of Christmas, Christmas food and Christmas tree, of which Christmas tree will be learned in details in Lesson 2. Encourage students to summarize what they’ve learned in this class comparing with the knowledge they knew before. At Christmas they often get together and have a big dinner. They sing Christmas songs and get presents from Santa. In fact, they will do other things as well. For example, they will decorate a Christmas tree … So, one task for you : collect some information on how to decorate a Christmas tree.HomeworkAnother task for you :listen and try to retell the story to your friends.Blackboard designAs you can see on the blackboard, I will help students sort out the core points like this way. In addition, the blackboard design adopts some Christmas symbols which can help students be fully immersed in the culture of Christmas.Thank you for your attention.
