M: The Big Apple is the nickname fr New Yrk City. Yu are ging t New Yrk with us, aren’t yu?
W: Yes, I am, and I’m especially lking frward t seeing the Museum f Mdern Art. There is a special shw f 20th century American painters there.(10) But, tell me, where did the nickname cme frm?
M: The jazz musicians f the 1920s are respnsible fr the name.(11) When they played a cncert in a city, they called the city an apple. Of curse, New Yrk was the biggest city in the cuntry and the best place fr a jazz cncert. S, the musicians called it the Big Apple.
W: Amazing! New Yrk is such a fascinating place and it even has an interesting nickname, ne that it has had fr ver 80 years.(12)
