When I bught a huse in Prtland fur years ag, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending
t remve the weeds and plant sme vegetables r lng-lasting flwers. I sn discvered, hwever, that the sil
was unprductive, clay-heavy and littered with stnes. In previus, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags
f high-quality sil frm the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity f dirt was neither practical nr
financially pssible. Instead, I decided t remediate (補(bǔ)救) what I already had.
The challenge befre me was t revitalize the sil. Tw cre principles f mdern agriculture can guide this
shift: minimizing sil disturbance and emphasizing bidiversity. In practice, grwing crps by turns, priritizing
rganic inputs ver chemical fertilizers, integrating crps, trees and livestck, and shielding sil frm being washed
away with cver crps, ften wrk.
I tried t apply such methds in my garden. Where nce there was nly grass, I created a pnd, a rck garden,
a wildflwer field and raised beds fr vegetables. I let plants grw and decmpse by themselves in a natural way. I
als intrduced different plants and revived its eclgical cmmunities.
In May, I decided t relcate a flwering plant. As I dug the plant ut, all manner f life emerged. Earthwrms
swung frm the rts. A daddy lnglegs hurried fr shelter. Belw the plant I even nticed the fine white lattice f
a fungal mycelium.
Running my fingers thrugh the sil, I understd, mre clearly than ever befre, that I transfrmed much
mre than my yard — it cmpletely changed the way I think abut sil. It’s nt simply as a medium fr life, but as
a living entity (個(gè)體) in its wn right. Althugh science still lacks an agreed definitin f life, textbks highlight
criteria widely cnsidered t differentiate the living and nnliving. Sil meets many f them: It has a highly
rganized structure. It has a capacity fr active self-preservatin. It grws. It breathes. And it can die.
4. Hw did the authr use t imprve the sil?

A new reprt cnnects eating eggs t an increased risk f heart disease. The results fllw several earlier
studies that fund eating eggs was generally healthy. The study cllects data frm six ther earlier studies. It shws
a 6 percent increased risk f heart discase when the number f eggs a persn ate each day increased by half an egg.
Nrrina Allen, an assciate prfessr at Nrthwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are
generally ne f the tp surces f chlesterl (膽固醇) in a persn’s daily fd. Peple with higher levels f
chlesterl in their fd are at increased risk f the develpment f heart disease later in life. Hwever, Allen added
that she wuld nt say that eggs are cmpletely unhealthy. “I’m nt saying that peple shuld take them cmpletely
ut f their fd,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that peple eat them in a prper amunt.”
Sme experts believe the new study des nt prve that eggs are causing heart disease. “Chlesterl’s rle in
the develpment f heart disease has been discussed fr mre than 30 years,” said Dennis Bruemmer, an assciate
prfessr f medicine at the University f Pittsburgh Medical Center. “This study des have clear shrtcmings,
including self-reprting at a single time pint,” he added.
Bruemmer said, “Eggs in mderatin (適度) are prbably acceptable frm a nutritinal standpint.”
“Mderatin,” he added, “is less than ne egg a day, including eggs in fds such as bread.”
Hlly Andersen a dctr at the New Yrk-Presbyterian/ Weill Crnell Medical Center, agrees that the study
has “real shrtcmings”. One prblem Andersen has with the study is that a lt f the egg-eating peple in the
study als appeared t be eating much meat and prcessed meat. “If yu’re taking a lt f prcessed meat, it desn’
t matter hw many eggs yu’re eating,” Andersen said.
第 5頁(yè)/共 12頁(yè)
Als, Andersen said, “The study can nly shw there is a relatin between eggs eating and heart disease. But it
cannt prve eggs are the cause f the disease. It may just be that peple eating a lt f eggs are als taking a lt f
bacn.”
8. What des Nrrina Allen agree with?
A. Eggs are cmpletely unhealthy.
B. Eggs cntain the mst chlesterl.
C. Eggs shuld be eaten in a right amunt.
D. Eggs have n cnnectin with heart disease.
9. What is Bruemmer’s attitude twards the study?
A. Interested. B. Dubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Hpeful.
10. What can we learn frm Hlly Andersen’s wrds?
A. Eggs and meat cannt be eaten tgether.
B. Prcessed meat may cause heart disease.
C. Prcessed meat shuld be avided.
D. The study is supprted by evidence.
11. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. D Eggs Cause Heart Disease?
B. Are Eggs the Tp Surce f Chlesterl?
C. What’s the Prper Amunt f Eggs Eaten?
D. Is the Chlesterl t Blame fr Heart Disease?

Many animals depend upn sund t find fd r cmmunicate with ne anther. These species
understandably suffer when lud mtrways cut thrugh their habitats. Scientists have lng dcumented the
eclgical damage caused by nise pllutin. It has always been assumed, hwever, that nise is a prblem unique
t animals. But a new study by Ali Akbar Ghtbi-Ravandi, a btanist in Tehran, has revealed that plants fell victim
t it t.
Wrking with a team f clleagues, Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi grew tw species in his lab that are cmmnly fund
in urban envirnments. The plants were grwn frm seed and allwed t mature fr tw mnths in the same space
befre they were divided int tw grups. One grup was expsed t 73 decibels f traffic nise recrded frm a
busy mtrway in Tehran fr 16 hurs a day. The ther grup was left t grw in silence. After 15 days had passed,
第 6頁(yè)/共 12頁(yè)
samples were taken frm the yungest fully expanded leaves n every plant in the experiment and studied.
Analysis f their leaves revealed that the chemicals which are indicatrs f stress in plants were fund at much
higher levels in the species expsed t the traffic nise. The team als fund that certain chemicals nrmally
assciated with healthy grwth in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants expsed t the
nise. Even the weight f the freshly-cut leaves differed — leaves frm plants expsed t nise cnsistently
weighed less than thse frm plants grwn in silence.
Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi’s findings make it clear that, thugh plants lack ears, the vibratins (震動(dòng)) generated by
the nise f traffic still bthers them enugh t cause strng stress respnses that are nt much different t thse
that wuld be fund in plants expsed t extreme cnditins.
The next questin is whether all nise pllutin affects all species in the same way. The natural wrld is by n
means silent. Whether sme plant species have evlved t adapt t the nisy envirnment, which might ne day be
cllected and transplanted in urban areas, is a mystery wrth explring.
12. What des the authr stress in paragraph 1?
A. The influence f nise n plants. B. Effects mtrways have n animals.
C. The imprtance f sund fr animals. D. Prblems plants have surviving in nature.
13. Hw did Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi cnduct the experiment?
A. By chsing tw rare plant species. B. By cllecting samples frm ld leaves.
C. By making plants grw alng mtrways. D. By studying plants grwn in different cnditins.
14. What can we knw frm Dr Ghtbi-Ravandi’s experiment?
A. Plants expsed t nise were less stressful.
B. Changes f chemicals in leaves were unclear.
C. Leaves f plants grwn in silence weighed mre.
D. Plants grew mre slwly when grwn in silence.
15. What might researchers d in the future?
A. T imprve the adapting ability f plants. B. T develp new species with high survival rate.
C. T set mre restrictins n urban traffic nise. D. T find plants suitable fr nisy urban areas.
