Ghanaian phtjurnalist Paul Ninsn was surprised. When he came t New Yrk t study phtgraphy five years ag, he fund a large cllectin f images f life in Africa in the city’s libraries and museums. Here he was thusands f miles frm Ghana, surrunded by mre visual histry f Africa than he had ever seen back hme.
That inspired him t create a library f phtbks in Ghana t bring the African stry hme, allwing peple t learn abut their histry and give them tls t tell new stries f the cntinent. It has been realized with the creatin f the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Dikan means “take the lead” in the Akan language.
This isn’t the nly time Ninsn set his sights n a seemingly impssible dream. Phtgraphy isn’t exactly valued as a career path in Ghana. Ninsn says, “If yu tell yur parents yu’re ging t be a phtgrapher, it was like, ‘What? G be a lawyer.’” But Ninsn felt phtgraphy was his calling. He was deeply influenced by the rich family histry f strytelling passed dwn thrugh his grandparents and later, attracted by a friend’s images, develped a lve f phtgraphy. Mre than 30% f the regin was a surce f CO2, accrding t the analysis, rising t 40% when emissins frm wildfires were included. By using data frm 200 study sites between 1990 and 2020, the research demnstrates hw the Arctic’s tundra, frests and wetlands are being transfrmed by rapid warming.
