When a pill is swallwed, it begins a dangerus jurney befre it can be absrbed int the bdy. Even if it
manages t survive expsure t stmach acid and resist degradatin by digestive enzymes, the pill must then g
thrugh the mucus (黏液) barrier — the gut’s (腸道) defense against unwelcme particles.
第 5頁(yè)/共 13頁(yè)
Sme large-prtein drugs , including the diabetes-treating insulin (胰島素), can’t pass thrugh the mucus
barrier at all. Because f the barrier’s strength, less than 1 percent f insulin taken rally is absrbed and used by
the bdy, requiring patients t inject it instead. But in a new study, researchers created a rbtic pill that can drill
thrugh the mucus barrier t deliver drugs mre efficiently.
“
I was watching vides f these machines that can make tunnels,” says Shriya Srinivasan, a bimedical
engineer at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy and lead authr f the study. “I thught, ‘OK, what if we did this
but fr mucus?’”
The team’s rbtic pill, called RbCap, is abut the size f a multivitamin. Inside, it hlds the drug paylad
in a tiny cmpartment. The utside is cated with gelatin (明膠) that can disslve (溶解) at a certain PH. When the
pill is swallwed and reaches the stmach, the cating wuld disslve. Then, the gut’s PH triggers a mtr inside
the capsule and makes the pill begin spinning (快速旋轉(zhuǎn)). The mtin erdes the cmpartment with the drug
paylad, which is slwly released int the digestive tract. After abut 35 minutes f activity, the capsule mves
thrugh the rest f the bdy and exits the bdy with a bwel mvement.
The researchers tested the pill’s ability t deliver insulin in seven live pigs. Cmpared t a similar pill withut
the cmplex mechanism, RbCap increased the amunt f drug absrbed by 20 t 40 times. “Further research
shuld lk at hw the pill wuld affect peple with weakened immune systems, as well as hw it impacts helpful
bacteria living in the gut’s mucus,” says Abdul Basit, a pharmaceutics researcher at University Cllege Lndn in
England wh was nt invlved with the study.

B. It cmes in different sizes and shapes.
C. Its cating can break dwn at a certain PH.
D. It may fail t wrk due t the temperature f rgans.

Smetimes, yu seem t hear a cnversatin between tw familiar vices, r the lyrics t a belved sng. It’s

Discncerting as this may be, dn’t wrry. Yu’re prbably experiencing audi pareidlia, a strange but
cmmn experience that happens when yu perceive wrds frm a randm nise. While it feels smewhat like a
hallucinatin ( 幻 覺(jué) ), hearing and psychlgy experts assure us that it’s nt. Instances f audi pareidlia are
different frm hallucinatins in that yu’re mishearing actual sunds in unusual ways.
“
When yu’re brn, yur brain is basically a sheet f blank paper. But yur brain is always lking fr
patterns, whether they’re visual, auditry, r anything else,” says Neil Bauman, the funder f the Center fr
Hearing Lss Help. The brain’s desire t find patterns it can recgnize frm randm infrmatin is why pareidlia
ccurs in every sensry system. It’s why yu see faces in the cluds verhead r feel smething crawling n the
surface f yur skin even thugh nthing’s there. On a physilgical level, yur brain, which tries really hard t
find meaning in all the sensry input it receives, ges digging int its archives ( 檔 案 ) t give meaning t an
unstable mess f nise. What yu end up hearing is yur brain’s ratinalizatin (合理化) f the backgrund sund.
“
“
Yu dn’t hear what yur ears hear, but yu hear what yur brain perceives yu t hear,” says Bauman.
Smetimes that’s a bit far ff frm what the actual nise is. Yur brain is very gd at finding patterns and adding
significance t randm input. That’s why yu understand that lud nises are a sign that yu might be in a
dangerus situatin—an evlutinary advantage.”
“
These patterns in questin are ‘fuzzy’ in the first place, nt ‘sharp’,” says Bauman f the deceptive
backgrund nise. “If the pattern was sharp, yur brain wuld get a perfect match, and yu’d hear the sund as a
fan r mtr sund. It’s the fuzziness f the sund that results in s much ambiguity.”

A. The sunds cause hearers’ inward panic.
B. The sunds are t lw t be clearly recgnized.
C. The hearers have difficulty recgnizing mixed sunds.

4. What des Neil Bauman think f audi pareidlia?

When a pill is swallwed, it begins a dangerus jurney befre it can be absrbed int the bdy. Even if it
manages t survive expsure t stmach acid and resist degradatin by digestive enzymes, the pill must then g
thrugh the mucus (黏液) barrier — the gut’s (腸道) defense against unwelcme particles.
Sme large-prtein drugs, including the diabetes-treating insulin ( 胰 島 素 ), can’t pass thrugh the mucus
barrier at all.
