T Karanth, everyne in every part f the wrld is brn with a fundamental cnnectin t nature. Grwing up in Karnataka, she began accmpanying her father int the wild at just tw years ld. But in her hmetwn, kids grew up with a negative perspective n wildlife. Elephants destryed crps and smetimes peple were badly injured r killed. Karanth discvered kids wuldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place t witness extrardinary animals.
In 2017, a cnversatin with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset twards educatin. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first versin f “Wild Shaale” n their hands. A prgram designed fr students wh cme int frequent cntact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims t develp a genuine understanding f wildlife and wild ces and mve beynd wildlife tlerance t cncepts f cnservatin and envirnmental issues. The cnservatin educatin prgram fills a gap in envirnmental learning.
While it is frtunate that a basic envirnmental educatin is supprted by lcal gvernment, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality f the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and cnsistently. “Yu have t visualize what these schls lk like. They may nt have electricity — frget having cmputers, internet, iPads, r anything.”
Encuraging the students t find cmmnalities between themselves and the animals is the first step t changing perceptins and hpefully, behavirs. “It cmes dwn t the same things: we need fd; we need water; we need ce. Then they start t understand why situatins f cnflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then hw d yu cnvince them nt t get angry, nt t act in a way that leads t harm? That’s smething we’re trying t wrk n. It’s nt easy.”

Mst peple in the Netherlands are cnvinced that their cnsumptin patterns affect the envirnment. Many f them are lking fr ways t reduce their ftprint. Hwever, the reality is mre cmplicated, accrding t a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levn Amatuni, wh studied car sharing and the reuse f phnes. He used his backgrund in cmputer science and mathematics t mdel and measure the benefits f such practices.
His research shws users f car-sharing platfrms reduce their impact by nly 3 t 18 percent — much less than 51 r 37 percent claimed in previus research. This is caused by s-called “rebund effects”, which are rarely accunted fr by cmpanies r even researchers.
Fr example, shared vehicles are replaced with new mdels mre frequently than private cars. Additinally, the intrductin f sharing schemes (方案) can encurage peple t drive when they wuld have therwise taken public transprt. These rebund effects turn ut t be highly influential. Amatuni als fund users f sharing platfrms dn’t significantly reduce their driving. “And if they d, they ften take buses and trains, which aren’t emissin-free,” he says. While public transprt is usually a better ptin, its impact is nt negligible. S, this data must be included t make an accurate assessment.
Similarly, Amatuni discvered that a secnd-hand phne nly ffsets (抵消) abut ne-third f a new phne’s prductin. Rebund effects are the cause. If peple culdn’t sell their ld devices, they wuld use them fr lnger.
In ther wrds, reuse bth extends the lifetime f a device — by giving it a new wner — but als shrtens it, as peple tend t sell their newly bught devices sner.
Amatuni desn’t want peple t cnclude taking small steps twards sustainability is pintless. “Our intentins are still what’s mst imprtant,” he says, “but meanwhile, peple need t realise there’re n easy fixes.” He recmmends priritising verall cnsumptin reductin rather than cntinuing current habits while trying t make them mre efficient.
8.What is the fcus f Amatuni’s research?
A.The ways f reducing peple’s ftprint.
B.The benefits f car sharing and phne reuse.
C.The damage f public transprt t the envirnment.
D.The knwledge f cmputer science and mathematics.
9.What des the underlined wrd “negligible” in paragraph 3 mean?

10.Which f the fllwing represents a phne rebund effect?
A.Buying new phnes ften.B.Keeping ld phnes in use.
C.Taking care f new phnes.D.Selling used phnes cheaply.
11.What is Amatuni’s suggestin n prmting sustainability?
A.Stp ec-friendly habits.B.Increase prductin efficiency.
C.Reduce ttal resurce use.D.Seek easy slutins t ec-crisis.

A study cnducted by Crnell University examined hw the use f AI in cnversatins impacts the way peple express themselves and view each ther.
The researchers have fund peple have mre efficient cnversatins, use mre psitive language and perceive each ther mre psitively when using an AI-enabled chat tl.
Hwever the grup als fund that when participants think their partner is using mre AI-suggested respnses, they cnsider that partner as less cperative.
“I was surprised t find peple tend t evaluate yu mre negatively simply because they suspect yu’re using AI t help cmpse text, regardless f whether yu actually are,” said Jess Hhenstein, the lead researcher. “This illustrates the cntinuus verall dubt that peple seem t have arund AI.”
Fr their first experiment, participants were asked t talk abut a plicy issue and assigned t ne f three cnditins: bth participants can use smart replies; nly ne participant can use smart replies; r neither participant can use smart replies. Researchers fund that using smart replies increased cmmunicatin efficiency, psitive emtinal language and psitive evaluatins by cmmunicatin partners. On average, smart replies accunted fr 14.3% f sent messages.
But participants whse partners suspected f respnding with smart replies were evaluated mre negatively than thse wh were thught t have typed their wn respnses, cnsistent with cmmn assumptins abut the negative implicatins f AI.
“While AI might be able t help yu write,” Hhenstein said, “it’s altering yur language in ways yu might nt expect, especially by making yu sund mre psitive. This suggests that by, using text-generating AI, yu’re giving up sme f yur-wn persnal vice.”
Malte Jung, an assciate prfessr, said, “What we bserve in this study is the impact that AI has n scial dynamics and sme f the unintended cnsequences that culd result frm integrating AI in scial cntexts. This suggests that whever cntrls the algrithm (算法) may have influence n peple’s interactins, language and insights int each ther.”
12.Which f the fllwing statements des Jess Hhenstein agree with?
A.AI always expresses in ways yu expect.
B.Algrithm will never influence peple’s insights.
C.Trust can be affected by using AI in cnversatin.
D.Yu will regain yur vice by using AI in cnversatin.
13.Hw d the researchers draw their cnclusin?
A.By analyzing figures.B.By perfrming a survey.
C.By cnducting experiments.D.By making cmparisns.
14.Hw will a persn feel abut suspecting his partner’s using smart replies?
A.Nervus.B.Uncmfrtable.
C.Excited.D.Puzzled.
15.Accrding t the passage, what are the unexpected cnsequences f using text- generating AI?
A.Yur language remains unchanged.
B.It desn’t alter speakers’ insights int each ther.
C.It makes the speaker sund mre negative.
D.Yu are lsing sme f yur persnal style.
16.What is the passage primarily abut?

Nameless Faces
Fr abut a year, my vyage t and frm wrk each day included a ten-minute walk thrugh the heart f dwntwn area. As with mst large cities, the hmeless ppulatin in my city ften gathered n dwntwn crners, asking pedestrians fr their re change. Like many busy citizens, I had learned t ignre the nameless faces begging fr mney each day. My limited life experience had led me t ne assumptin — they were n the streets because they chse t be, prbably due t alchl r ther similar things.
But wh wuld have thught that the first persn t change the way I viewed humanity wuld be a cmpletely stranger? My verall utlk n peple tk a 180-degree turn in less than ten minutes.

I didn’t even bther lking up at his nameless face. “Srry, n mney n me tday,” I made a lie as usual quickly, my eyes fixed n the grund ahead.
Just a few feet past him, I slipped n the icy pavement and fell hard. I lay there fr several mments, stunned and wndering if I had brken my leg.
