Frm a yung age, children learn that the wrd “please” hlds special pwer in cmmunicatin. It is ften

seen as a key t unlcking favrs and turning demands int plite requests. Hwever, recent research challenges
this belief, suggesting that “please” may nt always carry universal significance but instead functins as a
strategic tl t navigate scial dynamics.
A study published in Scial Psychlgy Quarterly by UCLA scilgists prvides a thrugh examinatin f
hw peple make requests. Cntrary t cmmn assumptins, the study reveals that “please” is used far less
frequently than expected. Its usage is particularly significant in situatins where a negative respnse is anticipated.
Whether asking fr butter at the dinner table r requesting a ride t the airprt, individuals ften use “please”
when they sense reluctance r busyness frm the ther persn. Rather than acting as a blanket expressin f
pliteness, it serves as a tactic t vercme resistance in interpersnal interactins.
Lead researcher Andrew Chalfun emphasizes understanding each situatin rather than relying n shallw,
ne-size-fits-all rules f etiquette. He warns that verusing “please” can seem pushy r insincere, affecting the
desired respnse. The study analyzed ver a thusand requests and fund that “please” was used in nly 7% f
cases, mainly when individuals expected resistance r when the persn asked was busy.
Mrever, the findings indicate that children use “please” similarly t adults, ften emplying it strategically
after experiencing previus refusals. This highlights hw learned scial nrms shape linguistic behavir frm an
early age, influencing persnality develpment.
The researchers hpe that their insights int the pragmatic use f pliteness will inspire future studies n
scial behavir. By uncvering the subtleties f everyday interactins, they aim t create mre accurate mdels f
human cmmunicatin, ultimately helping individuals accmplish mre effective and meaningful interactins.

The mther bird circled several times ver ur heads. I felt a mixture f fear and jy as she
