The partners f this DIY design make the inventins t prmte the jys f mechanical engineering and
inspire creativity in thers.
On Make It Extreme they transfrm everyday bjects and vehicles int extreme versins f themselves,
pushing creative bundaries in the prcess. They build and design their prjects, film and edit the entire prcess,
then finally shwcase the results.
“
By passinately crafting furniture, engines, tls, tys and vehicles while using ur imaginatin, we try t

There’re plenty f fresh fruits and vegetables available in lcal markets. But while thse red juicy strawberries
lk fresh, cnsumers have n way f knwing hw lng the fruit can be stred at hme. The same ges fr
distributin centers and supermarkets.
Nw, the fd technlgy startup OneThird, lcated in the Netherlands, is lking t change that with an
infrared (紅外線) scanner that can accurately predict hw lng fresh fruits and vegetables will last. The startup is
named OneThird because ne-third f fd is wasted due t spilage (變質) every year.
The startup’s funders were inspired by a UK cmpany that uses this type f technlgy in the medical field
and decided t see if it was applicable fr fd. “I lked at the challenges in the fd-supply chain and fund ut
that 40 percent f fd waste is fresh prduce. One f the biggest causes f waste is that nbdy knws shelf life.”
funder and CEO f OneThird, Marc Snikkers said.
Quality inspectins at farms and distributin centers are dne manually (手動地). An inspectr checks the
fruits and vegetables and makes ntes abut the size and quality. Then the fd is sent t cnsumers withut
cnsidering travel time r hw lng the prduce will remain usable.
Using the infrared scanner at the distributin center means that inspectrs can use the infrmatin t apprve
shipments that will ensure the prduce can be distributed n a timely basis. This means that a shipment f rip e
tmates will nt be sent lng distances away.
OneThird’s scanner cmbines the technlgy f ptical scanners, image mdeling, and Artificial Intelligence
t prvide accurate shelf-life predictins.
The startup fund that the technlgy can reduce up t 25 percent prduce waste that was caused by spilage.
“
Glbal fd waste has an enrmus envirnmental impact; reducing glbal fd waste cuts glbal greenhuse gas
emissins and prmtes glbal fd security,” said Jacb Smith, a climate expert frm the University f Maine.
. What prblem des OneThird aim t slve?

A. The high cst f string fresh fruits and vegetables.
B. Inefficient quality inspectins at distributin centers.
C. Fd waste caused by uncertainty abut its shelf life.
D. Cnsumers’ difficulty judging the freshness f prduce.

In a grundbreaking effrt, scientists at the University f Rchester have successfully transferred a lngevity
gene frm naked mle rats t mice, leading t enhanced health and a lnger lifespan fr the mice.
Unlike many ther species, the rats d nt ften cntract diseases, including cancer as they age. Vera
Grbunva, the Dris Jhns Cherry Prfessr f bilgy and medicine at Rchester, alng with Andrei Seluanv, a
prfessr f bilgy, and their clleagues have devted decades f research t understanding the unique
mechanisms (機制) that the naked mle rats use t prtect themselves against aging and diseases. The researchers
discvered that HMW-HA is ne mechanism respnsible fr the rats’ unusual resistance t cancer. Cmpared t
mice and humans, naked mle rats have abut ten times mre HMW-HA in their bdies. When the researchers
remved HMW-HA frm the rat cells, the cells were mre likely t frm tumrs (腫瘤).
“
Our study prvides a prf f principle that unique lngevity mechanisms that evlved in lng-lived
mammals can be exprted t imprve the lifespans f ther mammals,” says Grbunva. The Rchester rescarchers
reprt in a study published in Nature that they successfully transferred a gene respnsible fr making HMW-HA
frm a naked mle rat t mice. This led t imprved health and an apprximate 4.4 percent increase in the lifespan
fr the mice.
By intrducing a specific gene respnsible fr enhanced cellular repair and prtectin int mice, the
researchers have pened exciting pssibilities fr unlcking the secrets f aging and extending human lifespan. “It
tk us 10 years frm the discvery f HMW-HA in the naked mle rat t shwing that HMW-HA imprves health
in mice,” Grbunva says. “Our next gal is t transfer this benefit t humans.”
They believe they can make this feasible thrugh tw rutes: either by slwing dwn the degradatin f
HMW-HA r by enhancing HMW-HA synthesis. “We hpe that ur findings will prvide the first, but nt the last,
example f hw lngevity adaptatins frm a lng-lived species can be adapted t benefit human lngevity and
health.” Seluanv says.

根據(jù)上文“If yu’re having a practical cnversatin, yur friend might ask yu t help make hard decisins. (如果
你正在進行一場實際的對話,你的朋友可能會讓你幫忙做一些艱難的決定。)”可知,提到你的朋友可能會
讓你幫忙做一些艱難的決定。以及下文“If yur friend is just expressing his feelings, yu just need t be a gd
listener.
Then yu shuld be ready t give gd advice.
根據(jù)上文“T d that, experts suggest a technique called “cycle fr understanding”. Ask a questin and listen t

This practice sunds simple but is pwerful.

根據(jù)下文“The gal f a discussin isn’t t impress smene, cnvince smene r wait fr their turn t speak.
It’s t genuinely cmprehend smene else’s pint f view and share their wn views accrdingly.
They
aim t understand. 故選 A。
根據(jù)上文“The right respnse creates an atmsphere f trust and penness that bth parties can benefit frm. (正
確的回應會創(chuàng)造一種信任和開放的氛圍,雙方都能從中受益。)” 提到,正確的回應營造了一種信任和坦誠
的氣氛,對雙方都有利。故可推知,空處應繼續(xù)說明正確的回應的必要性或重要性。選項 G 項 And that is
actually the mst magical thing that can happen.
