Pems fr high schlers
If
The pem is written by Rudyard Kipling. In this pem, a father talks f several values and advises his sn t
live with mderatin and cnstraint (克制) t cntinuusly maintain calm and avid verreacting. The pem is full
f psitivity fr persnal grwth in difficult times. Anyne struggling with a lack f desire in life can still benefit
frm it.
The Laughing Heart
The pem advises readers t take cntrl f their wn life and make the mst f their time. At the beginning f
the pem, Charles Bukwski talks abut hw ne shuldn’t let thers take their “l(fā)ight” ut f them. Bukwski says
that nce yu begin t shw up fr yur wn life, “amazing” things will begin t happen t yu. The Laughing
Heart, which fcuses n risk and making decisins in life, is attractive t yuth as it serves as an encuragement t
them t stand up fr themselves in difficult times.
Fifth Grade Autbigraphy
Thrugh the pem, Rita Dve discusses the gd memries f her mst significant life influences as a child.
By using language and pictures, she recalls hw great and significant her family is as she lks at a phtgraph.
Based n Dve’s petry, an excellent activity wuld be t ask children t select a pht that’s significant t them
and write their wn Fifth Grade Autbigraphy.
The Rse That Grew Frm Cncrete
The pem is abut achieving ur life gals despite the challenges we experience alng the rad. In this pem,

My initial explratin f the wrld f cmic bks happened thrugh the cmic strips in newspapers. It began
with a fndness fr Garfield and his adventures, and led t the discvery f a range f cmic bks like Champak,
Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me t enjy myself in a wrld withut iPads and the Internet ― just like s many
f my friends wh were fnd f reading.
While my access t cmics as a child was limited t what was printed in the newspaper, this changed nce I
grew lder and started visiting bkstres t buy the bks that I wanted t read. Having grwn up n a diet f
image-heavy bks, I fund the idea f reading text-nly nvels quite frmidable. As I searched fr bks that lay
smewhere in between, I came acrss a cpy f Bhimayana ― a graphic nvel. It felt familiar due t its cmic-like
theme and design. Plus, understanding cmplex narratives thrugh pictures was relatively easier and mre fun. And
s, as I grew lder, I fund myself transitining twards graphic nvels frm childish cmic bks.
Graphic nvels dealt with serius tpics in a mre engaging manner. They wuld literally shw me what was
ging n. Fr example, when I was reading Je Sacc’s Palestine, I didn’t have t imagine the ruin caused by the
Israeli-Palestinian cnflict. I culd actually see it while reading abut it.
Fast-frward a few years t when I was given a cpy f Jnathan Blmfield’s Palestine: A Nvel. Thugh I
was impressed by the cmpelling (扣人心弦的) nature f strytelling in his bk, I am nt sure if I wuld have
been able t visualize and enjy his text-nly versin s much had I nt read Sacc’s Palestine first. Thanks t the
graphic nvel, I had a “picture” f whatever had happened, and that made it easier and mre fun t understand the
details f the verall stry.
Frm black and white strips and clrful cmic bks t illustrated graphic nvels, this type f strytelling has
cme a lng way. While my rmance with cmic bks is still nging, in the lng run, my lve fr graphic nvels
is mre substantial and here t stay.
24. Why did the authr turn t cmic bks as a child?
第 5頁/共 13頁
A. He fund cmic bks interesting.
B. He had limited access t ther bks.
C. He wanted t be different frm his friends.
D. He culd relax frm reading text-nly bks.
25. Which wrd can best explain the underlined wrd “frmidable” in paragraph 2?
A. Acceptable. B. Natural.
C. Scary. D. Appealing.
26. What des the authr say abut reading Sacc’s Palestine?
A. It encuraged him t read mre text-nly nvels.
B. It imprved his understanding f Blmfield’s bk.
C. It intrduced him t a cmpelling style f strytelling.
D. It changed his attitude t the Israeli-Palestinian cnflict.
27. What des the authr mainly talk abut in the passage?
A. Cmic bks are mre than cmic.
B. Why he lves reading graphic nvels.
C. Why he turned t serius nvels eventually.
D. Picture bks are here t stay fr many reasns.

One mrning in June 1986, I placed an empty snail shell int a tide pl n Lng Island. A hermit crab(寄居
蟹)came by, inspected the shell, and quickly exchanged it fr its ld ne. Sn anther crab fund the abandned
shell, did the same, and mved n. Abut 10 minutes later a third crab fund the secnd’s ld hme and claimed its
prize, leaving behind its damaged ne.
It may seem strange, but these small creatures are making use f what scilgists call a “vacancy chain(空缺
鏈 )”—an rganized methd f exchanging resurces in which every individual benefits by claiming a mre
desirable pssessin abandned by anther individual. Recent studies have revealed tw types f vacancy chains in
hermit crabs: synchrnus and asynchrnus. In the asynchrnus type(like what I bserved), usually ne crab at a
time cmes acrss a vacant shell withut ther crabs nearby. But in synchrnus chains, they line up by size behind
the ne examining a vacant shell. Once it mves int the new shell, the thers quickly fllw, each taking the
better-suited shelter in line.
Thugh research n vacancy chains in animals beynd hermit crabs is limited, early evidence suggests that the
第 6頁/共 13頁
strategy has evlved widespread. Humans fllw the same pattern. Studies in 1960s Manhattan shwed hw new
apartments triggered a chain reactin, allwing many families t upgrade their husing. Car dealers in the early
20th century adpted a similar system, trading in ld cars t facilitate new sales. Vacancy chains highlight that
resurce distributin is nt just abut cmpetitin but als abut the efficient transfer f resurces, shedding light
n issues like husing shrtages and even crime.
Nt lng ag, I returned t the beach where my bservatins began. Watching the hermit crabs crawl thrugh
the tide pl, I felt grateful and delighted, realizing that sme patterns f ur scial life are s fundamental that we
even share them with rather primitive creatures.
28. Where was the secnd crab’s riginal shell accrding t paragraph 1?
A. It was taken by the first crab. B. It was exchanged with a snail.
C. It was ccupied by the third crab. D. It was left behind in the tide pl.
29. Which f the fllwing is crrect abut the tw kinds f chains?
A. Asynchrnus chains ccur nly in animals.
B. Asynchrnus chains invlve fighting ver resurces.
C. Synchrnus chains invlve crabs queuing up by age.
D. Synchrnus chains ccur when crabs gather in the same place.
30. Which f the fllwing can set ff a “vacancy chain”?
A. Winning a bet. B. String canned fd.
C. Selling ld vehicles fr new nes. D. Buying dispsable plastic bttles.
31. What des the passage imply abut the significance f studying vacancy chains?
A. It may suggest new ways t care fr crabs.
B. It may reveal hw cmpetitin is stimulated.
C. It may highlight the imprtance f saving resurces.
D. It may give insights int human resurce distributin.

The ability t detect a nearby presence withut seeing r tuching it may sund fantastical — but it’s a real
ability that sme creatures have. A family f African fish knwn as Mrmyrids are weakly electric, and have
special rgans that can lcate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have nw develped an
artificial sensr system mdelled n the ability f these fish.
“We develped a new strategy fr 3D mtin psitining by electrnic skin, bi-inspired by ‘electric fish’,”
第 7頁/共 13頁
says Dr. Xinge Yu, an assciate prfessr in the Department f Bimedical Engineering at the City University f
Hng Kng. The team described their e-skin sensr in a paper published n Nvember 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensr is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (發(fā)射器), which will generate an electric
field nce activated, and anther layer acts as a receiver t detect bth the directin and the distance t an bject. A
separate cntrller creates the driving signal t activate the transmitter. When an bject cmes within range, the
electric field arund the sensr is disrupted (擾亂), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then
prcessed by a micrcntrller unit, which cmputes the psitin f the target bject and sends that infrmatin t
a smartphne r ther devices.
A special bigel (生物凝膠) is used in the sensr, which has the ability t transmit and receive electric signals
frm a pattern f micrchannels n the surface. The end result is a sensr that is thin, sft and flexible, making it
csy t adapt t irregular surfaces, such as the human bdy. In cntrast t the traditinal sensr system that needs a
large number f sensrs t achieve spatial psitining, the new system can lcate an bject precisely in 3D space
using just a few sensrs. This significantly reduces the pwer cnsumptin f data cllectin, transmissin, and
prcessing.
The researchers hpe that this sensr culd ne day pen up a new range f wearable technlgies, including
sensrs fr human-machine interactin and thin, flexible e-skin.
32. The first paragraph aims t shw __________.
A. the special ability f African fish
B. the inspiratin fr a new inventin
C. the big challenge f lcating bjects
D. the reasn fr develping a sensr
33. What is the crrect rder f the system’s wrking prcedures?
a. The transmitter creates an electric field.
b. A unit cmputes the psitin f the target.
c. The cntrller sends the activating signal.
d. The receiver detects the change f electric signals.
e. The electric field is disrupted by an appraching bject.
A. c-a-e-d-b. B. c-a-d-e-b.
C. a-c-e-d-b. D. a-e-c-d-b.
34. What is an advantage f the new sensr system?
第 8頁/共 13頁
A. Its sensitivity t different stimulatins.
B. Its adaptatin t envirnmental changes.
C. Its efficiency in achieving 3D psitining.
D. Its speed in data cllectin and prcessing.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A Machine Detective “Wears” Flexible E-skin
B. Bi-inspired Sensr “Feels” Withut Tuching
C. E-Skin Sensr: The Future f Machine Learning
D. Electric Fields: The Frntier f Object Detectin
