If yu think shpping nline is mre ec-friendly than driving t a stre, think again.
It may sund strange, but the mre ec-friendly way t shp is ging t a physical stre rather than by making purchases nline frm cmpanies that dn’t have physical stres, accrding t a new reprt in Envirnmental Science& Technlgy, a peer-reviewed scientific jurnal published by the American Chemical Sciety.
In the study, researchers estimated that shpping at physical stres fr frequently bught items such as tilet paper, shamp and tthpaste, ften results in less greenhuse gas emissins (排放) than rdering the prducts frm a cmpany that nly sells thrugh the Internet.
The main reasn is because f hw peple shp nline: Many buy items nline frequently — but they nly buy a few items per purchase. “When they shp in a stre, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” nted Sadegh Shahmhammadi, ne f six researchers wh wrked n the year-and-a-half lng study.
“Frequent nline purchases prduce mre packaging waste, and nline items tend t cme frm different distributin (配送) centers. Bth factrs result in higher greenhuse gas emissins per item,” said Shahmhammadi.
The team mdeled their research n the mvement f gds frm the factry all the way thrugh t the end cnsumer. They then specifically fcused n the part f the retail supply chain (零售供應鏈) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a stre t a custmer, r in the case f nline shpping, the distance between the distributin center fr the gds t the custmer.
The analysis shwed that ttal greenhuse gas ftprints per item purchased were higher frm physical stres than thse frm bricks& clicks (when peple rder nline and a physical stre delivers the items t them) purchases in 63% f the shpping events but lwer than thse f pure players (strictly nline sellers) in 81% f shpping events.
28. What’s the authr’s purpse in mentining the new reprt?
A. T recmmend a strange shpping habit.B. T intrduce a respected scientific jurnal.
C. T analyze nline shpping.D. T prve the advantage f ffline shpping.
29. What des the underlined wrd “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cmbine.B. Prduce.C. Divide.D. Check.
30. What can we learn abut “the last mile” delivery?
A. It is designed by the research team.B. It is managed by the factries.
C. It causes high greenhuse gas emissins.D. It influences the ttal greenhuse gas ftprints.
31. Accrding t the analysis, which is prbably the mst ec-friendly way t shp?
A. Buying at physical stres.B. Buying frm bricks & clicks.
C. Buying frm pure players.D. Buying a few items per time.
D
In the ld days — say, the 1980s — if yu bught a piece f technlgy, a paperback user guide came with it. It was the manufacturer’s ne big chance t explain its engineers’ thinking t yu, t cmmunicate what the designers and marketers had in mind.
Supplying dcumentatin seemed, at the time, like a gd idea all arund. Mastery made custmers happy, and happy custmers meant repeat sales. But there were ther frces at play. Printing and binding tk time and mney — and custmers didn’t seem t be reading user manuals.
Over time, therefre, physical manuals began disappearing frm ur hardware and sftware bxes. Maybe yu’d get a Quick Start leaflet, but the rest was nline.
Online, yu can search fr certain terms, find tpics faster and pst questins fr ther peple. Online cmmunities and answer sites sprang up. Mini tutrials n the Internet began shwing yu hw t perfrm a task. And it’s all free.
Meanwhile the kind f technlgies we use has changed. “Peple increasingly spend time in apps and scial sites that have a fairly simple interface (界面),” Tim O’Reilly tld me. (He’s funder f O’Reilly Media, which publishes my wn hw-t bks. )Yu dn’t need a manual t use Ggle.
That was the beginning f the end fr physical manuals. In principle, the death f prfessinally prepared supprt materials shuldn’t be any cause fr cncern. It’s just anther big change caused by the Internet, anther in the list f casualties, such as printed encyclpedias, newspaper classified ads and music n discs.
In reality, thugh, nne f the tech industry’s teaching channels, whether physical r nline, is universal and effective. T this day, it’s astnishing hw little we knw abut ur phnes, cmputers and sftware. A Micrsft prduct manager nce tld me that mst feature requests the cmpany gets fr Micrsft Office are, in fact, already features f Micrsft Office.
Hardware and sftware makers still perate with their traditinal business mdel: Every year r s they sell us a new versin, whse appeal is suppsed t be mre features. And s, as time ges by, ur devices and apps becme mre and mre cmplex — but access t dcumentatin remains limited and incmplete.
In the fantasy versin f ur wrld, designers wuld make ur tech prducts simple enugh, their imprtant features bvius enugh, fr the masses t figure ut n their wn. Until then, there will be a grwing infrmatin gap between the features we want and the engineering wrk that’s already been dne.
32. The wrd “casualties” (paragraph 6) is clsest in meaning t _________.
A. causesB. manualsC. industriesD. victims
33. Why did the authr mentin what a Micrsft prduct manager nce tld him?
A. T criticize the lack f access that we have t cmplete dcumentatin.
B. T reveal the traditinal business mdel that sftware makers perate with.
C. T emphasize that it is a pity that physical manuals are n lnger available.
D. T illustrate that peple actually knw little abut the tech prducts they use.
34. What can be inferred frm the passage?
A. Tech cmpanies’ teaching channels are shrinking as time ges by.
B. There is little chance that tech prducts will sn be simple enugh.
C. Printed manuals wrked better than nline versins.
D. Cnsumers f the 1980s lved t read user manuals.
35. Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A. What Happened t User Manuals?
B. Hw Did Physical Manuals Prsper?
C. Hw Simple Will Our Tech Prducts Be?
D. What Change Has the Internet Brught Abut?

D 29. A 30. D 31. B
根據(jù)第一段的“If yu think shpping nline is mre ec-friendly than driving t a stre, think again. (如果你認為網(wǎng)上購物比開車去商店更環(huán)保,請三思而后行)”以及第二段“It may sund strange, but the mre ec-friendly way t shp is ging t a physical stre rather than by making purchases nline frm cmpanies that dn’t have physical stres, accrding t a new reprt in Envirnmental Science& Technlgy, a peer-reviewed scientific jurnal published by the American Chemical Sciety.(這聽起來可能很奇怪,但根據(jù)美國化學學會出版的同行評審科學期刊《環(huán)境科學與技術》的一份新報告,更環(huán)保的購物方式是去實體店,而不是從沒有實體店的公司在線購物)”可推知,作者提到該報告是為了證明線下購物的好處。故選 D。
根據(jù)第四段的“The main reasn is because f hw peple shp nline: Many buy items nline frequently — but they nly buy a few items per purchase.(主要原因是人們在網(wǎng)上購物的方式:許多人經(jīng)常在網(wǎng)上購物,但每次只買幾件)”以及劃線單詞后面的“in a single large purchase(一次性大額購買)”可知, “aggregate these items in a single large purchase”的意思應該是與前文相反,表示當他們在商店購物時,他們會將這些商品合并為一筆大額購買,所以劃線單詞的意思應該是“集合,加在一起”。故選 A。
根據(jù)第五段““Frequent nline purchases prduce mre packaging waste, and nline items tend t cme frm different distributin (配送) centers. Bth factrs result in higher greenhuse gas emissins per item,” said Shahmhammadi.(“頻繁的在線購買會產(chǎn)生更多的包裝浪費,在線商品往往來自不同的配送中心。這兩個因素都會導致每件商品的溫室氣體排放量增加,”Shahmhammadi說)”以及第六段的“They then specifically fcused n the part f the retail supply chain (零售供應鏈) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a stre t a custmer, r in the case f nline shpping, the distance between the distributin center fr the gds t the custmer.(然后,他們特別關注零售供應鏈中被稱為“最后一英里”交付的部分:商店到客戶之間的距離,或者在網(wǎng)上購物的情況下,貨物配送中心到客戶之間)”可推知,“the last mile” delivery(最后一英里配送)指從商店到顧客或從配送中心到顧客的距離,這一部分影響了總的溫室氣體足跡。故選 D。
根據(jù)最后一段“The analysis shwed that ttal greenhuse gas ftprints per item purchased were higher frm physical stres than thse frm bricks& clicks (when peple rder nline and a physical stre delivers the items t them) purchases in 63% f the shpping events but lwer than thse f pure players (strictly nline sellers) in 81% f shpping events.(分析顯示,在63%的購物活動中,實體店購買的每件商品的溫室氣體排放總量高于bricks & clicks(當人們在網(wǎng)上訂購,實體店將商品交付給他們時)的購買量,但在81%的購物事件中低于純粹的參與者(嚴格意義上的在線賣家))”可知,根據(jù)分析顯示,在線上加線下(bricks & clicks)購物方式中,溫室氣體排放量在大多數(shù)購物事件中低于純在線購物方式(pure players)。
A. What Happened t User Manuals?B. Hw Did Physical Manuals Prsper?
C. Hw Simple Will Our Tech Prducts Be?D. What Change Has the Internet Brught Abut?
D 33. D 34. B 35. A
根據(jù)第六段中“In principle, the death f prfessinally prepared supprt materials shuldn’t be any cause fr cncern. (原則上,專業(yè)準備的支持材料的死亡不應該引起任何擔憂)”以及劃線單詞句中“It’s just anther big change caused by the Internet, anther in the list f casualties, such as printed encyclpedias, newspaper classified ads and music n discs.(這不過是互聯(lián)網(wǎng)帶來的又一個巨大變化,是印刷版百科全書、報紙分類廣告和光盤音樂等諸多casualties中的又一個)”可知,printed encyclpedias(紙質(zhì)百科全書)、newspaper classified ads(報紙分類廣告)和music n discs(光盤音樂)都因互聯(lián)網(wǎng)而受到影響,這里的casualties該指的是受互聯(lián)網(wǎng)影響而受損或消失的事物,即“受害者,犧牲品”,與D選項“victims(受害者)”意思最接近。故選D項。
根據(jù)第七段“T this day, it’s astnishing hw little we knw abut ur phnes, cmputers and sftware. A Micrsft prduct manager nce tld me that mst feature requests the cmpany gets fr Micrsft Office are, in fact, already features f Micrsft Office.(直到今天,我們對自己的手機、電腦和軟件所知甚少,令人驚訝。一位微軟的產(chǎn)品經(jīng)理曾經(jīng)告訴我,公司收到的關于微軟Office的大多數(shù)功能要求實際上已經(jīng)是微軟Office的功能了)”可知,很多用戶向微軟提出的功能需求,其實在微軟辦公軟件中已經(jīng)存在,這說明人們對自己使用的科技產(chǎn)品了解甚少,作者提及此事是為了闡述這一點。故選D項。
34. 推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段“In the fantasy versin f ur wrld, designers wuld make ur tech prducts simple enugh. their imprtant features bvius enugh, fr the masses t figure ut n their wn. Until then, there will be a grwing infrmatin gap between the features we want and the engineering wrk that’s already been dne.
根據(jù)文章大意,以及第一段中“In the ld days—say, the 1980s—if yu bught a piece f technlgy, a paperback user guide came with it.(在過去,比如20世紀80年代,如果你買了一項技術,就會附帶一本平裝本的用戶指南)”和第三段“Over time, therefre, physical manuals began disappearing frm ur hardware and sftware bxes. Maybe yu’d get a Quick Start leaflet, but the rest was nline.( 因此,隨著時間的推移,物理手冊開始從我們的硬件和軟件盒中消失。 故選A項。
