In recent years, there has been a nticeable change in the attitude twards animal welfare here in the Philippines, a mvement that I hpe will lead t lasting, systemic change.
Amng the many inspiring and pineering animal welfare advcates ding the gd wrk here in the cuntry is Rina Ortiz, funder f Biyaya Animal Care, wh has a strng understanding f the ppular landscape here in the cuntry.
While ther animal welfare prgrams are dependent nly n dnr funding r gvernment supprt, Biyaya Animal Care serves as a mdel n sustainable animal welfare advcacy — perating a pet clinic and using earnings t supprt ver a thusand pets hused in an animal shelter in Alfns, Cavite.
This, f curse, was made pssible because Ortiz understands the challenges caused by limited resurces — bth frm the gvernment and the private sectr—in supprting animal welfare, prmpting her t find sustainable slutins t supprt this imprtant cause.
The Biyaya Animal Care mdel prves the imprtance f adaptability and resurcefulness. Thrugh a self-sustaining mechanism, Biyaya Animal Care shws that animal welfare desn’t have t be a zer-sum game but rather a cperatin where the private sectr can play a mre active rle in pushing fr the cause.
I share Ortiz’s passin fr sustainable animal welfare advcacy; which is why I intrduced the cause t my wn wrkplace, Meralc, and went a step further by institutinalizing it.
Thrugh Meralc, emplyees are able t cntribute t effrts t address the verppulatin prblem f hmeless cats with neutering (絕育) prgrams.. By ding s, it als cntributes t imprving public health cnditins since cntrlling the grwth f the hmeless animal ppulatin thrugh neutering helps minimize the risk f rabies (狂犬病). Thus that wuld nt nly benefit animals but als cntribute t the imprvement f cmmunity life, public health and safety.
4. Hw des Biyaya Animal Care supprt animal rescues?
A. By asking fr gvernment funding.
B. By full reliance n public dnatins.
C. With the help f ther welfare prgrams.
D. Thrugh perating a pet clinic and using its prfits.
5. What des the underlined wrd “prmpting” in paragraph 4 mean:

New Curtin University-led research has uncvered what may be the ldest direct. evidence f ancient ht water activity n Mars, shwing the planet may have been habitable at sme pint in its past.
The study analyzed a 4.45 billin-year-ld zircn (鋯石) grain frm the famus Martian meterite (隕石) NWA7034, als knwn as Black Beauty, and fund gechemical “fingerprints” f water-rich liquids. Study c-authr Dr Aarn Cavsie frm Curtin’s Schl f Earth and Planetary Sciences said the discvery pened up new appraches fr understanding ancient Martian verheated-liquid systems assciated with magmatism (巖漿), as well as the planet’s past habitability.

“Overheated-liquid systems were essential fr the develpment f life n Earth and ur findings suggest Mars als had water, a key factr fr habitable envirnments, during the earliest histry f surface frmatin.”
Thrugh nan-scale imaging, the team identified element patterns in this unique zircn, including irn, aluminum, yttrium and sdium. These elements were added as the zircn frmed4.45 billin years ag, suggesting water was present during early Martian magmatic activity. Dr Cavsie said the research shwed that even thugh Mars’ surface suffered massive meterite strikes that caused majr surface change, water was present during the early Pre-Nachian perid, prir t abut 4.1 billin years ag.
“A 2022 Curtin study f the same zircn grain fund it had been ‘shcked’ by a meterite strike, marking it as the first and nly knwn shcked zircn frm Mars,” Dr Cavsie said. “This new study takes us a step further in understanding early Mars, by way f identifying tell-tale signs f water-rich liquids frm when the grain frmed, prviding gechemical markers f water in the ldest knwn Martian surface.”

As we age, ur cgnitive and mtr (運(yùn)動(dòng)) functins wrsen, which in turn affects ur independence and verall quality f life. T imprve r even remve this cnditin, research has given rise t many prmising technlgies.
Amng these is nn-invasive (無(wú)創(chuàng)的) brain stimulatin: a term cvering a set f techniques that can affect brain functins nn-invasively frm the utside, withut the need fr surgery. One such prmising technique, in particular, is andal transcranial direct current stimulatin (atDCS).
Nw, scientists have identified an imprtant factr affecting an individual’s respnsiveness t atDCS. The team lked at hw native learning abilities determine the effect f brain stimulatin applied while learning a mtr task. Their findings suggest that individuals with less efficient learning mechanisms benefit mre frm stimulatin, while thse with ptimal (最優(yōu)的) learning strategies might experience negative effects.
The researchers emplyed 40 participants: 20 middle-aged adults (50 — 65 years ld) and 20 lder adults (ver 65). Each grup was further divided int thse receiving active atDCS and thse receiving placeb (安慰劑) stimulatin. Over ten days, participants practiced a finger-tapping task designed t study mtr list learning at hme while receiving atDCS. The task invlved cpying a numerical list using a keybard, trying t be as fast and as accurate as pssible. The team then used a machine-learning mdel t classify participants as either “ptimal” r “sub-ptimal” learners, based n their first perfrmance.
The study fund that sub-ptimal learners, wh were seemingly less efficient at cmpleting the task at the early stages f learning, experienced a quick accuracy imprvement while perfrming the task when receiving atDCS. This effect was nt limited t peple f a certain age, with sub-ptimal learners being fund amng yunger individuals as well.
In cntrast, participants with ptimal learning strategies, regardless f age, even shwed a negative tendency in perfrmance when receiving atDCS. This difference suggests that brain stimulatin is mre beneficial fr individuals wh firstly struggle with mtr tasks. As such, atDCS seems t pssess a restrative rather than a strengthening quality, with imprtant significance fr recvery.
12. What is atDCS?
A. A technique nly fr lder adults.
B. A way t transfer smething int the brain.
C. A nn-invasive brain stimulatin technique.
D. A surgical methd t imprve cgnitive functins.
13. What can we cnclude frm the study abut atDCS?
A. It is nly useful fr lder adults in imprving mtr tasks.
B. It has different effects n peple with different learning strategies.
C. It has n significant effects n the perfrmance f any participants.
D. It has a psitive effect n the participants wh are gd at lgical thinking.
14. What’s the main idea f paragraph 4?
A. The result f the experiment n different age grups.
B. The way t classify participants as different learners.
C. The imprtance f the finger-tapping task in the study.
D. The intrductin f the participants and the experimental prcess.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. The Influence f Learning Abilities n the Effect f atDCS

C. The Develpment f Nn-invasive Brain Stimulatin Technlgies
D. A Cmparative Study f Mtr Task Cmpletin in Different Age Grups
