With massive factrs influencing academic achievement, it can be difficult t identify the exact reasn why sme students excel(勝過)while thers fall behind. Hwever, a reprt released by the Natinal Center n Scaling Up Effective Schls(NCSU)shws that student wnership and respnsibility are key factrs that have a big impact n a student's quality f academic perfrmance.
The reprt presented findings frm the first phase f a five-year research prject that aims t identify the types f prgrams, practices and prcesses that supprt better utcmes fr students at risk f failure. Initial findings indicated that the practice f increasing student wnership and respnsibility fr their academic success was a distinguishing feature f schls with higher student achievement. The researchers explain that students wh take respnsibility fr their wn learning are persnally invested in their educatin and are mre cmmitted t understanding their subject matter.
One thing that all schls with higher value-added students had in cmmn was that they held high expectatins fr student leaning. These schls didn't just assume that students wuld develp this sense f respnsibility n their wn; instead, teachers put specific structures in place t help students take wnership f their educatin, and made a cncentrated effrt t encurage and supprt students alng the way. Additinally, teachers held the mindset that student wnership must be develped early n in a student's educatinal career.
The research shws that students wh are encuraged t take wnership f their wn learning are better able t wrk tward learning gals and demnstrate life skills such as initiative, self-directin and prductivity. Such students will shw their respnsibility thrugh behavirs such as cmpleting assignments n time, making up fr missed wrk, seeking additinal help when they are struggling, asking questins when cnfused, and mnitring their wn learning.
Lead researcher Marisa Cannata pints ut that these findings are cnsistent with the current research that fcuses n helping students develp s-called "grwth mindsets(心態(tài))" and prviding them with the skills they need t fcus their learning effrts. The specific practices and cnditins that make such a learning envirnment pssible are described in mre detail in the reprt Reaching fr Rigr: Identifying Practices f Effective High Schls.

Years ag, the wrld-knwn Viennese philspher Viktr E. Frankl criticized the ppular understanding f sme cherished American values, such as ur idea f freedm. He tk exceptin t what appeared t be a cmmnly accepted view f equating freedm with a license t d virtually anything ne wants. T Frankl, freedm withut respnsibility was nnsense. That is why he suggested that the Statue f Liberty in New Yrk Harbr n the East Cast be accmpanied by a "Statue f Respnsibility” smewhere alng the West Cast.
Such a mnument makes sense t me and, in my view, wuld be much mre than just a "bkend" t the Statue f Liberty. It culd serve, amng ther things, as an imprtant reminder t everyne f what is required t safeguard true freedm and hw t perfrm civil respnsibilities.
A nnprfit fundatin exists t advance Frankl's idea with the gal f cmpleting the statue. After the initial release f Prisners f Our Thughts, which I was hnred t write at Dr. Frankl's persnal urging, I als became invlved in the nnprfit fundatin's effrts in an advisry capacity as well as being invited t be ne f the cntributrs t a bk it spnsred entitled, Respnsibility 911: With Great Liberty Cmes Great Respnsibility, published in 2008. This bk examined the rle that respnsibility plays in a free sciety. In this regard, I was hnred t be amng a very distinguished grup f cntributrs.
As yu can learn frm this list, the bk embraced a wide range f idelgies(意識(shí)形態(tài))and plitical beliefs. Indeed, making a strng and diversified case fr the rle f respnsibility in a free sciety belngs t n ne plitical party r a particular grup. Rather, respnsibility is a demnstratin f the "ability t respnd" and, in this cntext, requires rules f engagement that include bth civility and agreement t disagree n matters f cmmn cncern. Diversity in all f its varius dimensins, especially the diversity f thught, must be respected as a necessity f "respnsibility" in the cllective(集體, 共同). Otherwise, we will never be able t reach cmmn grund, a meaningful bjective requiring, first and fremst, that we are willing and able t g t higher grund.
32. What des the underlined part "tk exceptin t" in paragraph 1mean?
A. Disapprved. B. Misunderstd. C. Excluded. D. Cmpared.
33. Why des the authr believe a Statue f Respnsibility is needed?
A. T hnur the legacy f humanity. B. T prmte turism n the West Cast.
C. T symblize the imprtance f freedm. D. T urge peple t perfrm their civil duties.
34. What d we knw abut Respnsibility 911?
A. It was spnsred by Viktr E. Frankl. B. It is a cllective wrk f diverse writers.
C. It was recmmended by many celebrities. D. It is based n Prisners f Our Thughts.
35. What is necessary fr a respnsible sciety accrding t the authr?
A. Respecting the diversity f thught. B. Ignring different plitical beliefs.
C. Having a unifrm idelgy and belief. D. Cntrlling varius dimensins f diversity.
