The perfumer believes that perfume helps t truly understand the mst imprtant part f a character. “We’ll meet up t talk abut the rle the styling, wh the directr is, wh the ther actrs are, the space, atmsphere, where they might be filming, whether it will be cld r ht. There are many necessary parts at play. I’ll then g and start testing and making slight changes until the perfume is abslutely perfect,” said Glasser wh can spend anything frm a week t three mnths t create a custm-made perfume.
Azzi believes that each place is unique, and her heightened sense f smell can pick up even the mst unnticeable ntes t help her design the perfect smell t stress guests’ experience. She even created a perfume fr her wn hme: “My kids’ friends lve cming t ur hme. They ften jke that they lve the way they smell when leaving.”
“Having a perfume that is made especially fr yu, which yu lve and thse arund yu enjy and which creates a persnal style and memries fr years t cme, is a kind f pleasure in life,” Glasser said. And the results last a lifetime — the idea is that this smell will becme yur signature (鮮明特色) fr life. “The happiness that it brings t peple when they have their wn custm-made perfume fr life — whether yu are a tp Hllywd actr, a mdel, an artist r the girl r by next dr — is a fantastic feeling fr me t live with. Having friends is bviusly gd fr cuntless reasns. And shwing the wrld that yu have lts f friends, fr example n scial media, seems like a winning strategy. If that is the truth, yur gal is t expand yur scial netwrk. Once peple see hw ppular yu are, they'll want t jin that ppular circle, perhaps in the hpe that sme f yur ppularity will rub ff n them.
Nevertheless, can a persn even have t many friends at the same time? It’s always been a miscnceptin that if yu have mre friends, peple will be mre likely t want t be friends yu.
In fact, a new study published in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy shws that having t many friends may wrk against yu. In a series f experiments. the authrs prve that peple usually prefer t befriend thse wh have fewer friends than they d, rather than thse with mre friends. The authrs call this phenmenn the “friend-number paradx(悖論)”, which is als the title f their new paper.
Scial ties are bviusly imprtant. Having mre f these cnnectins suggests greater scial value, and mre ptential pssibilities. S it seems reasnable t assume that peple will fcus their scial energies n befriending peple wh have lts f friends already.
But the prblem is that these scial ties are nly valuable if there’s reciprcity(互惠) invlved. Friendship ges hand in hand with certain respnsibilities and expectatins. And peple with lts f friends may nt be able t fulfill thse respnsibilities—especially thse with t many friends.
In ther wrds, “friendship quality” matters as much, if nt mre, than nly the number f friends yu have. Having lts f friends means yur precius scial resurces becme dilute (稀釋了的), making yu less able t be a gd friend. And ther peple take that int accunt cnsciusly(有意識地)r uncnsciusly when deciding whether t befriend yu. They dn’t want t spend their valuable scial resurces n smene wh is unlikely t pay it back.
8. What d the underlined wrds “rub ff n” in paragraph l mean?

C. Hld n t.D. Have an effect n.
9. What des the “friend-number paradx” shw?

B. The ways f winning mre friends.
C. The advantages f having many friends.
D. The prblems with having many friends.
10. What des the authr think f peple with lts f friends?
A. They may fail t perfrm their duties.
B. They dn’t knw abut reciprcity.
C. They are mre likely t be gd friends.
D. They have mre precius scial resurces.
11. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. Hw D Peple Chse Their Friends?
B. Mre Friends Are Nt Necessarily Better
C. Why D Peple Like Having Mre Friends?
D. Peple With Mre Friends Are Mre Ppular

Scientists have already established frm multiple studies that Mars cntains large amunts f water. Mst f the water exists in the frm f ice. Chinese researchers say they have built an artificial intelligence(AI) rbt that can use materials fund n Mars t prduce catalysts (催化劑) t break dwn water and release xygen. It culd be anther way fr space travelers in the future t make much-needed xygen n Mars.
Experiments were carried ut n meterites that either came frm Mars r cntained materials similar t the Martian surface. The “rbt chemist” first used an acid and chemical mixture t separate and examine materials cntained in the meterites. It identified several different metallic elements and then wrked t identify different mlecules (分子) that culd be prduced frm meterite materials. The system fund mre than 3.7 millin pssible mlecule cmbinatins. The rbt used that data t predict which catalysts wuld be able t split water mlecules t prduce xygen. The catalyst chsen as the best fit was able t perate at minus 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature is similar t current cnditins n Mars.
The study’s lead writer, Jun Jiang, said that as a by, he ften dreamed f being able t ne day travel in space. “S when we finally saw that the catalysts made by the rbt culd actually prduce xygen by splitting water mlecules. I felt like my dream was cming true. I even started t imagine that I, myself, will live n Mars in the future.”
A reprt explaining the study’s results ntes Jiang suggests that fr every square meter f Martian material, his grup’s system culd prduce nearly 60 grams f xygen per hur. The researchers say this level f prductin culd remve the need fr future astrnauts t transprt xygen frm Earth. “The rbt can wrk cntinuusly fr years.” Jiang said.
Jiang said, “It culd als be used t prduce ther useful catalysts n Mars. This culd include prcesses fr making substances t supprt the grwth f plants that culd be used t prduce fd fr astrnauts. Different chemicals can be made by this rbt. Mars might als nt be the nly place where it culd find ther used, suggesting the mn as anther pssibility.”
12. What d Chinese scientists use AI rbts t d in the research?
A. T cllect water data frm Mars.
B. T prduce xygen frm water n Mars.
C. T explre the ice cverage n Mars.
D. T assist humans in settling dwn n Mars.
13. Which aspect f the research des Paragraph 2 fcus n?
A. Its prcess.B. Its scale.C. Its result.D. Its effect.
14 Why des the authr mentin Jiang’s dream?
A. T explain the chemical reactin.B. T advcate space travel.
C. T prve the success f the study.D. T shw the future life n Mars.
15. What des Jiang stress in the last paragraph?
A. The substances fr grwing plants n Mars.
B. The existence f xygen n the mn.
C. The pssible discvery f chemicals n Mars.
D. The ptential applicatin f AI rbts.
