It was a cld May mrning when I received an email frm an ld friend inviting me t jin a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had t say yes. The trip seemed simple enugh. 10 wmen aged 30 t 45, all cmplete strangers, were t meet n the cast f Prtugal t try smething new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. I have always lved traveling, s I eagerly sent an email t my bss asking fr time ff t make the trip.
If there’s ne thing I’ve learned ver my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve dne befre. It seems like we pride urselves n becming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen int, knwing mre abut less. Nw, in thery, this is a great strategy, as it allws yu t becme really gd at ne particular thing, but it als kind f ends up leaving sme skills lacking.
Guided by ur amazing caches, tgether, we faced the waves. Smetimes, it pured with rain, and the waves crashed arund us, but we were still ut there. And with every slip and fall, wrds f encuragement filled the air. Hnestly, I prbably spent mst f my days frzen t the bne, but that didn’t matter because a new level f genuine jy and persnal achievement had been unlcked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humility (謙虛) that can cme frm ding badly at smething new, and the pride that develps when yu finally manage t grasp smething yu’ve been wrking n. While surfing might nt be my lifelng passin, trying it ut inspired me t take mre risks in life. Yu never knw what yu’re capable f if yu dn’t g ut there and try.

The Greek philspher Heraclitus taught that yu can’t step int the same river twice, fr yu aren’t the same persn at each visit, and the water is ever flwing. It is a pwerful way t represent the reality f impermanence: Everything is always changing.
Many peple have tense relatinships with change. They deny it, resist it r attempt t cntrl it- the result f which is almst always sme cmbinatin f stress, anxiety, and burnut. It desn’t have t be that way.
A cncept called allstasis can help. Develped in the late 1980s by a neurscientist, Peter Sterling, and a bilgist, Jseph Eyer, allstasis is defined as “stability thrugh change,” elegantly shwing the cncept’s duble meaning: The way t stay stable thrugh the prcess f change is by changing, at least t sme extent.
The river f change has been flwing mercilessly, and it shws n signs f letting up. Scietally, we’ve gne thrugh a pandemic (大流行病), its ecnmic decline and the widespread adptin f scial media, the cmbinatin f which has shifted hw we live and wrk. In ur persnal lives, we cntinue t d what we have always dne: relcate, start jbs, quit jbs, change jbs, get prmted, experience illness, get married, have children, retire and n and n.
Finding ways in this river requires bth ruggedness and flexibility. T be rugged is t be tugh and determined, t knw yur cre values and what yu stand fr. T be flexible is t actively respnd t changing circumstances, t adapt and bend easily withut breaking, t grw and even change yur mind. Put these qualities tgether and the result is a great endurance, ne that helps yu maintain yur strng cre even in fragile mments. It allws yu t step int allstasis’s cycle f rder, disrder and rerder — which is, f curse, ne and the same with stepping int Heraclitus’s river —and t chart it skillfully and whenever pssible, t yur wn benefit.
What d we knw abut allstasis?
A. It is a cntradictry cncept. B. It tends t fcus n change.
C. It advcates dynamic stability. D. It claims abslute adaptability.
29. Which f the fllwing best explains “l(fā)etting up” underlined in paragraph 4?

C. Fight fr Flexibility D. Balance Life and Wrk

Grwing up, I felt that I learned sme things quickly and ther things painfully slwly. Picking up French and Spanish seemed t cme naturally, while painting and drawing required a lt f practice. I thught that sme peple just have a talent fr languages; thers dn’t.
Yu’ve prbably felt the same way — that certain things were easier fr yu t learn. And s did my research partners. S we set ut t identify what makes sme peple learn faster than thers. If we culd just distill (提取) these unique characteristics, we thught, we wuld be able t create better learning envirnments — and make everyne a fast learner.
In ur study, we mdel data frm student perfrmance n grups f tasks that assess the same skill cmpnent and that prvide fllw-up instructins n student errrs. Our mdels estimate the increase in crrectness after each practice pprtunity. We applied ur mdels t 1.3 millin bservatins acrss 27 datasets f student interactins with nline practice systems in the cntext f elementary t cllege curses. In cntrast, and much t ur surprise, we fund students t be astnishingly similar in estimated learning rate. There are n such things as fast and slw learners!
We find that a typical student needs abut seven learning pprtunities t master a typical knwledge cmpnent. They start at different levels f prficiency but, when prvided with high-quality practice pprtunities, they learn at abut the same speed. Yes, they will end in different places-but that’s because they have different starting lines, nt because they are quicker r slwer t learn.
That means the types f pprtunities yu get are imprtant. Detailed, timely feedback and hints prvide favrable cnditins that allw yu t cnsistently make prgress, regardless f where yu began.
Dn’t think yu’re alne if learning feels slw and effrtful. D try, try again. Yu can make as much prgress as everyne else—and s can the yung peple in yur life. Achievement gaps are the result f pprtunity gaps, nt individual differences in learning speed.
What is the authr’s previus thught accrding t the first tw paragraphs?
He can’t learn painting and drawing. B. All peple have a talent fr languages.
C. Peple learn things in the same way. D. Peple have different learning speeds.
33. What did the researchers d in the research?
A. Teach elementary curses. B. Criticize students’ mistakes.
C. Apply their mdels extensively. D. Distinguish the fast and slw learners.
34. Hw can a student make greater achievements accrding t the research?
A. By using high-quality equipment. B. By ding mre efficient practice.
C. By cmpeting with ther students. D. By increasing learning speed.
35. What is the best title f the text?
A. There Is N Such Things as a Fast Learner B. Hw We Can Learn Faster than Others
C. There Is N Difference Between Students D. Why Educatin Is Imprtant t Us
