The machine tls were expensive in America and many f them wuldn’t be bught in Ghana. S they tk Abu t a lcal building materials market and asked him t pint ut materials and tls he culd access in Ghana, and that led t the creatin f what Abu called "Mr. Jeffry’s Third Wrld Machine Shp". Abu tk the parts f the first ne back t Ghana t use as a mdel fr building thers. Under Abu’s guidance, tw teams f carpenters wuld build tw machines each mnth.
In 2008, Abu was ffered nine acres f land and granted permissin t build the first training center. Because transprting everything by hand ver a small stream was time-cnsuming, the Ghanaians engineered and built a bridge, entirely by hand. The blcks t build the training center were handcrafted. Hwever, they cmpleted it within several mnths.
Nw the training center teaches wdwrking, fabric arts, and fd preservatin t rural Ghanaians. S far, it has trained thusands f Ghanaians. "We have built bridges, fixed rads, and repaired buildings all with vlunteer lcal labr. The cncept here is nt charity," Jeff said. "It’s just helping them help themselves. Dgs may pssess a deeper understanding than what they utwardly exhibit. Pet dgs’ brains displayed neural (神經(jīng)的) signs f surprise when their wners shwed them an unexpected ty. The findings suggest that dgs create mental cncepts f bjects.
"Anyne wh has ever interacted very much with a dg prbably is nt s surprised t knw that dgs understand that their speech is referring t at least a few cmmn bjects," says scientist Ellen Lau. But the majrity may have assumed that this srt f "understanding" is just a simple, almst autmatic respnse t the prnunciatin f the term.
Sme unusually gifted dgs have extrardinary vcabulary. A famus dg named Chaser knew mre than 1,000 wrds fr tys, fr instance. In an experiment, the dg heard a recrding f its wner’s vice saying the wrd fr a ty. Then, it saw the wner appear in a windw hlding up a ty. Electrdes (電極) n its head picked up strnger brain signals when an unexpected ty was presented instead f the ne named by the wner.
The researchers think the signal indicates surprise and suggests that the dg had already frmed a mental cncept and expectatin f the ty after hearing that wrd. In fact, the signal was especially strng fr a mismatch invlving wrds that the dgs reprtedly knew very well. "That suggests that it is really abut understanding and knwledge f the wrd," Marianna Brs, the c-authr f the study, says.
Humans have this surprise signal, t. It’s called the N400 effect, and it ccurs in the brain just after smething unexpected happens. "There have been nw thusands f human studies investigating and using this N400 effect," Lau says. But there has been n evidence f a similar signal in dgs, until nw.
This neural signal f surprise in the dgs’ brains wasn’t shcking. Scientists have previusly fund clues abut hw dgs prcess meaningful wrds, but the findings give a glimpse int the mental lives f dgs that didn’t exist befre. They understand mre signs than they shw.
8. What d mst peple think f dgs’ understanding f human speech?

B.Dgs have n preference fr tys.
C.Dgs’ brains react strngly t surprises.
D.Dgs’ memries are limited by vcabularies.
10. What can be learned abut dgs’ mental abilities?
A.They have been fully understd.
B.They are identical t thse f humans.
C.They exclude the frmatin f bject cncepts.
D.They are similar t humans in frming expectatins.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A.Dgs Can Understand Humans’ Requests
B.Dgs Knw Mre Wrds than They Let n
C.Dgs Have Prnunciatin Signals in Their Brains
D.Dgs Are Extremely Talented in Learning Wrds
Fr decades, "simpler is better" has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant prfessr f marketing at the UO Lundquist Cllege f Business, has tested that assumptin. He fund that mst cnsumers prefer fferings that appear t be easy t use and understand. Hwever, pushing simplicity can have a hidden, cstly dwnside.
“Simplicity is nt a silver bullet,” Light said. This methd might wrk fr established cmpanies with track recrds t back up their claims. But it can be risky fr a start-up with n histry r a cmpany in a cmplicated market categry where failures r breakdwns are mre cmmn.
Light’s earlier experience stimulated his interest in the study. He was a marketing manager at a direct-t-cnsumer mattress(床墊) cmpany. With the catchwrd "ne perfect mattress", the cmpany ffered nly ne mattress mdel shipped directly t the cnsumer’s dr, dramatically simplifying the mattress-buying prcess. "Sme custmers calling with even minr prblems such as a slight disclratin in the material, wuld get really angry," Light said. "They wuld say things like, "I dn’t understand what’s s difficult abut this,’ even when prducing and shipping mattresses are quite cmplex. These custmers were getting verly upset because the prduct and prcess had been labeled as simple."
The study als shwed that cnsumers judged the cmplexity f brands r prducts based n their mental cnnectins. Fr example, when study participants viewed advertisements fr tw different cmpanies, they frmed mental pictures f the simplicity r cmplexity f the brand depending n hw plain r busy the art was and the details prvided in each ad.
Light als lked int prduct quality and custmer pinins and fund that cnsumers are less likely t recmmend simpler brands after failures cmpared t mre cmplex brands. Therefre, the lessn fr marketers is t be mre careful abut building branding and advertising strategies arund simplicity, because they culd easily backfire if the prduct r service fails t deliver.

Weeding and clean-up t remve the need fr harmful pesticides可知,志愿者通過除草,打掃以減少殺蟲劑的使用,屬于生態(tài)友好的園藝工作。故選C。
We will be clsing the gates at 8:15 am.
3.答案: A
Spusring a Crprate Renew the Z event部分中yur grup wrks tgether t cmplete Z prjects ... having fun and cnnecting with team members可知,活動(dòng)中可以增強(qiáng)團(tuán)隊(duì)凝聚力和團(tuán)隊(duì)意識。故選A。
4.答案: D
解析: 根據(jù)文章第二段"Abu wanted t start a wdwrking prgram t help children learn hw t make a living."
The machine tls were expensive in America and many f them wuldn’t be bught in Ghana. S they tk Abu t a lcal building materials market and asked him t pint ut materials and tls he culd access in Ghana..."
6.答案: D
解析: "In 2008, Abu was ffered nine acres f land and granted permissin t build the first training center."
7.答案: A
We have built bridges, fixed rads, and repaired buildings all with vlunteer lcal labr. The cncept here is nt charity,"Jeff said. "It’s just helping them help themselves. Educatin is really the tl fr getting peace in the wrld in my mind."
But the majrity may have assumed that this srt f ‘understanding’is just a simple, almst autmatic respnse t the prnunciatin f the term."
9.答案: C
解析: 從第三段"Electrdes (電極) n its head picked up strnger brain signals when an unexpected ty was presented instead f the ne named by the wner."
The researchers think the signal indicates surprise and suggests that the dg had already frmed a mental cncept and expectatin f the ty after hearing that wrd." Humans have this surprise signal, t. It’s called the N400 effect..."
Dgs Knw Mre Wrds than They Let n"(狗知道的詞匯比它們表現(xiàn)出來的更多)作為標(biāo)題最合適,答案選B。
Simplicity is nt a silver bullet,"Light said. This methd might wrk fr established cmpanies with track recrds t back up their claims. But it can be risky fr a start-up with n histry r a cmpany in a cmplicated market categry..." A risky investment"(一種有風(fēng)險(xiǎn)的投資)不符合此處表達(dá)的意思;"A business strategy"(一種商業(yè)策略)沒有體現(xiàn)出萬能、通用的意味;"A quick-fix methd"(一種快速解決的方法)側(cè)重于快速解決問題,沒有強(qiáng)調(diào)萬能這一要點(diǎn),所以這三個(gè)選項(xiàng)不符合題意。
13.答案: A
Sme custmers calling with even minr prblems such as a slight disclratin in the material, wuld get really angry,"Light said. "They wuld say things like, ‘I dn’t understand what’s s difficult abut this,’even when prducing and shipping mattresses are quite cmplex. These custmers were getting verly upset because the prduct and prcess had been labeled as simple."
The study als shwed that cnsumers judged the cmplexity f brands r prducts based n their mental cnnectins. Fr example, when study participants viewed advertisements fr tw different cmpanies, they frmed mental pictures f the simplicity r cmplexity f the brand depending n hw plain r busy the art was and the details prvided in each ad."
Therefre, the lessn fr marketers is t be mre careful abut building branding and advertising strategies arund simplicity, because they culd easily backfire if the prduct r service fails t deliver."

This allws yu nt t get stressed ut abut sme future happenings."(這能讓你不會對未來的一些事情感到壓力過大。)說明正念能讓人專注當(dāng)下,從而避免因未來之事而焦慮,E選項(xiàng)"That’s because mindfulness helps yu live in the present mment."(那是因?yàn)檎顜椭慊钤诋?dāng)下。)
There are sme things that yu can cntrl and things yu cannt. While the things yu can’t cntrl are the nes that are ut-f-yur-hands yu can wrk n the nes that are."(有些事情你能控制,有些事情你不能控制。
If yu take the time t actively listen t what peple are saying t yu instead f thinking ahead t yur respnse, yu can stay in the present mment."(如果你花時(shí)間積極傾聽別人對你說的話,而不是提前考慮你的回應(yīng),你就能活在當(dāng)下。) This will train yu t be a mre mindful and patient persn."(這將訓(xùn)練你成為一個(gè)更專注、更有耐心的人。)那么中間應(yīng)該是具體講如何積極傾聽的做法,G選項(xiàng)"Put away yur phne, lk at the persn yu’re speaking with and fcus."(放下你的手機(jī),看著和你說話的人并專注傾聽。)
Rather than just thinking hw this affects yu, cnsider that this actin isn’t abut causing yu prblems. Just think that the waiter may be dealing with a difficult custmer."(不要只想著這件事對你有什么影響,要考慮到這個(gè)行為不是為了給你制造麻煩。 是在說要換位思考、理解他人,F選項(xiàng)"Understanding thers better will help yu t be a mre patient persn."(更好地理解他人將幫助你成為一個(gè)更有耐心的人。)
