The COVID-19 pandemic has been a frequent tpic f cnversatin fr mst f us ver the past year. As we dreamt f indr dining, vacatins, and hugging ur friends again, my friend Ana texted that her mther, living in Brazil, had been infected by the crnavirus. I wn’t g int details here, but the disruptin t life in Brazil have been especially upsetting cnsidering their scial and cultural nrms(規(guī)范).
Ana is Brazilian, and I’m frm the US. While living in New Yrk City, we became fast friends despite the few awkward cultural differences I learned t deal with. She was cmfrtable with intimacy; I preferred t keep my distance. She liked the cmpany f many; I liked the friendship f few. It was awkward fr me t lean in fr a quick hug, nly t be embraced then kissed n the cheeks. T this day, I’m nt an excellent cheek kisser, but I try. She is ne f many peple ver the years wh have educated me, in a way, abut delighting in cultural difference.
I called Ana t check n her mther and I was primarily curius abut hw scial and cultural nrms have been affected. It’s difficult, said Ana, because the necessary health regulatins are ppsite t “what we believe and everything we knw abut living in a cmmunity and displaying feelings f lve”, but she hasn’t given up hpe. I asked if the shifts made during the pandemic will change cultural nrms. “Abslutely nt,” said Ana. This is wh Brazilians are in nature and change desn’t happen vernight. They spend a lt f time and energy investing in relatinships, and the deeply rted scial cnventins wn’t change quickly.
Over the years, Ana has shared many stries that emphasize the differences in ur upbringing. I delight in ur differences, even if kissing n the cheek makes me uncmfrtable. We find ur cmmnalities, like talking with ur hands, being expressive, and valuing cmmunity. And we learn frm ur differences. COVID disrupted many things, but thrugh all f this, Ana said, we must cnstantly be adjusting, understanding, and ding what’s best fr ur cmmunities and the peple we lve.

D. Because Brazilians rarely value investment in relatinships.

Fr humans, adapting t climate change will mstly be a matter f technlgy. Mre air cnditining, better-designed huses and bigger fld defenses may help lessen the effects f a warmer wrld. Animals will have t rely n changing their bdies r their behaviur. In a paper published in Trends in Eclgy & Evlutin, a team led by Sara Ryding, a prfessr in Australia, shws that is already happening. In sme species f Australian parrt, fr instance beak (喙) size has increased by between 4% and 10%since 1871. Similar trends are seen in species f mice and bats grwing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings.
All that fits nicely with evlutinary (進(jìn)化) thery. “Allen’s rule”, named after Je Allen, wh suggested it in 1877, hlds that warm-blded animals in ht places tend t have larger appendages (附加物) than thse in mild areas. Such adaptatins bst an animal’s surface area relative t its bdy vlume, helping it t get rid f additinal heal. Fennec fxes, meanwhile, which are native t the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially cmpared with their Arctic cusins.
Ryding’s team cmbined data frm different species in different places. Nw that they have little in cmmn apart frm living n a warming planet, climate change is the mst reasnable explanatin. Since any evlutinary adaptatin cmes with trade-ffs, it is unclear hw far the prcess might g. Bigger beaks might interfere with feeding, fr instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cst mre energy t grw.
Hnestly, studying a brader range f animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. Fr nw, at least, the increase is small, never much mre than 10%. That may change as warming accelerates. Every little bit f avided future temperature increases results in less warming that wuld therwise stay fr essentially frever.
32. Why d sme species grw bigger parts f their bdy?
A. They are fllwing the new trends.
B. They have t adapt t warmer climate.
C. Scientists need them t d experiments.
D. Larger parts tend t help them feed well.
33. Where may warm-blded animals have bigger bdy parts?
A. In mild areas.B. In ht places.
C. In the Arctic.D. In deserted regins.
34. What d we knw abut the change in animals frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. It cmes at a cst.
B. Its cause is definite.
C. It happens in the same habitat.
D. Its prcess will end sn.
35. What can be a suitable tile fr the text?
A. Living n a Warming Planet
B. Measures t Remve Heat
C. Pineering Research n Animals
D. Evlutin t Survive Heat
