As the mnths went n, my runs became lnger. I nticed that my clthes were getting a little lser. Running burned calries and gave me smething t lk frward t n weekend. It had the surprise effect f better sleep, which added t my running enjyment even mre. Anther thing I never expected was the mental effect that running had n me. I had mre patience. A few mnths later, an pprtunity arse t run the New Yrk Marathn. Withut verthinking it, I signed up. I definitely was nt able t run 26.2 miles when I signed up, but that was part f the attractin. What if I failed r nly made it halfway? “Wh cares” is what I learned. In the last 100 meters, I heard my name and sptting my daughter in the grandstand. I waved and smiled. Fellw scientists, I finally have sme gd news t reprt. As yu knw, I have been studying sea life fr three mnths in New Yrk Harbr. Tday, I can finally present sme hard evidence that sharks have returned t these waters. Fr the past tw weeks, I’ve been helping t film the Shark Week prgram fr the Discvery Channel n TV. My jb was t sit in a bat near a dead whale and check it fr shark bites. It’s been a very ht July, s this wasn’t the easiest task. After five days, I nticed there were several large shark bites alng the stmach f the whale. I was thrilled! Because this means ur prtectin effrts are starting t pay ff. Sharks’ returning t a frmer hunting grund indicates that the waters are cleaner and healthier. We have been trying t clean up this area and the rivers that pured int the sea fr many years.
