Demis Hassabis, ne f the recipients f the 2024 Nbel Prize in Chemistry, was brn n July 27th, 1976, in Lndn.
He started learning chess at 4 and wn the Lndn Under-8 Champinship tw years later. Anther 7 years later, he achieved the secnd place glbally in the under-14 age grup chess cmpetitin. This was the first time that he’d shcked the wrld. In 1992, he was admitted t the Cmputer Science prgram at the University f Cambridge. He entered University Cllege Lndn in 2005 t pursue a Ph.D. in cgnitive neurscience. In 2011, he funded DeepMind, which is a wrld-leading artificial intelligence (AI) research grup. After 5 years, the AI prgram AlphaG he created defeated the wrld’s tp G player, Lee Sedl. In 2020, DeepMind’s AI system AlphaFld participated in a cmpetitin rganized by the Critical Assessment f Structure Predictin (CASP) n calculating the 3D structure f prtein mlecules (分子) and achieved an unexampled level f predictin accuracy.
Hassabis was cnsidered ne f the “smartest humans n Earth” by the great British physicist Stephen Hawking, wh served as a prfessr at the University f Cambridge befre he passed away in 2018. In 2014, DeepMind was acquired by Ggle fr 600 millin dllars even befre it had publicly released any prducts and had nly 20 technicians. Since then, Hassabis and his team have influenced Ggle’s develpment directin fr the next decade, guiding the tech giant frm a mbile-first apprach t an AI-first ne.
Demis Hassabis, alng with David Baker and Jhn M. Jumper, was awarded the 2024 Nbel Prize in Chemistry fr their cntributins t prtein structure predictin. Their AlphaFld has slved a 50-year-ld prblem by being able t predict the cmplex structures f apprximately 200 millin knwn prteins. The success f AlphaFld nt nly lies in its accuracy f predictin but als in its brad applicatin prspects. Thrugh this mdel, scientists can gain a deeper understanding f the structure and functin f prteins, prviding mre accurate infrmatin fr new drug research and develpment and disease treatment.

Scurvy has lng been assciated with early explrers wh lacked access t fresh fruits and vegetables while they traveled arund the glbe fr years at a time. But scurvy, which is caused by Vitamin C deficiency (缺乏), isn’t an illness that has gne away.
Dctrs recently diagnsed (診斷) scurvy in tw patients living in distant parts f the planet, ne in Canada and ne in Australia. The Australian case centers n a 51-year-ld man. Dctrs ran their first series f tests t check fr internal bleeding, as well as bld disrders. But nne f their diagnstic tls ffered any clues as t what was causing the man’s illness. Dctrs learned that the man was unemplyed and living alne. He’d been eating mstly prcessed fds, and he had begun skipping meals mre frequently in the weeks leading t his hspital visit. He received a weight lss surgery eight years earlier but t save mney, he stpped taking the nutrients that the dctr tld him t take.
Armed with this infrmatin, dctrs rdered a new rund f tests, which shwed that the man had n detectable levels f Vitamin C in his system. Eventually, dctrs diagnsed him with scurvy.
Dctrs in Canada described a similar experience this mnth in the Canadian Medical Assciatin Jurnal. A 65-year-ld wman came t a Trnt hspital with leg weakness, and pr mbility.
In bth cases, dctrs didn’t rutinely test fr scurvy because they thught humans had gt rid f scurvy. “This is based n the cnditin that there is plentiful Vitamin C in ur mdern fd supply, s deficiency shuld nt ccur,” says Lauren Ball, a cmmunity health researcher. Frtunately, Vitamin C deficiency is easy t treat.
While dctrs diagnsed 8.2 cases per 100,000 children in 2016, that number had increased t 26.7 per 100,000 by 2020. The average age f patients with scurvy was 2 years ld. And in an analysis f nearly 13,000 Vitamin C tests, 29.9 percent f patients had a mdest deficiency and 24.5 percent had a significant deficiency.
8. What did the dctrs find after cnducting their first series f tests n the man?
A. The man nce suffered frm scurvy. B. The man used t eat irregularly.
C. Their diagnstic tls went wrng. D. Their test methds didn’t wrk at all.
9. What’s the dctrs’ initial attitude t the pssibility f develping scurvy in bth cases?
A. Cncerned. B. Dismissive. C. Dubtful. D. Unclear.
10. What are the statistics in the last paragraph abut cncerning scurvy?
A. Its features. B. Its variety. C. Its trend. D. Its results.
11. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Scurvy: A New Prblem? B. Scurvy: A Frgtten Illness?
C. Scurvy: A Permanent Memry? D. Scurvy: An Easily-treated Disease?

Mislabeling is a wrldwide issue, and it ccurs when the species f fish yu’re buying is nt the ne yu actually receive.
Fish prducts ften pass thrugh multiple cuntries befre they finally reach ur table. Alng the way, prducts can be misidentified as anther species r intentinally renamed t make mre prfit. Fr instance, a cheap fish like tilapia may be given the name f a mre expensive fish, like red snapper, r an endangered species might be passed ff as an alternative that is ding better in numbers. These make it extremely hard t mnitr their lgistics (物流) prcesses.
T investigate this issue in Canada, we examined mislabeling market names in finfish (鰭魚(yú)) prducts in Calgary between 2014 and 2020. We sampled 347 finfish prducts frm Calgary restaurants. These samples were then genetically tested by using a species-specific marker called a DNA barcde.
In Canada, the Canadian Fd Inspectin Agency (CFIA) maintains a Fish List that prvides the acceptable cmmn names fr the labeling f fish. A seafd prduct was cnsidered mislabeled if it was sld by using a name nt fund n the Fish List fr the DNA-identified species. Fr instance, there is nly ne species that can be sld under the name salmn (鮭魚(yú)) : Atlantic salmn. If sckeye salmn was sld as salmn withut any ther qualifier, it was cnsidered mislabeled.
We’ve discvered that mislabeling runs rampant in Calgary and that certain prduct names are mre likely t hide species f cnservatin cncern. The result: up t ne in five finfish was nt as advertised. Several examples f mislabeling invlved substituting an expensive prduct fra cheaper species: tilapia fr snapper, rainbw trut fr Atlantic salmn. While cmpanies in places like Miami and Mississippi have faced fines fr such practices, the glbal nature f fisheries makes legal actin difficult. If yu eat seafd, there is a chance that yu culd be misled as a cnsumer and end up eating threatened species. Yu can actually d smething t reduce these pssibilities.
12. What can we say abut tracking fish prducts?
A. It’s unnecessary. B. It’s lw-cst. C. It’s difficult. D. It’s time-bund.
13. What can be learned abut the Fish List f the CFIA?
A. It prvides fish ptins fr restaurants. B. It lists all Canadian endangered species.
C. It encurages the mislabeling f fish. D. It has strict Canadian fish naming rules.
14. What des the underlined phrase “runs rampant” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Remains serius. B. Stps suddenly. C. Becmes expensive. D. Disappears sn.
15. What might the authr cntinue talking abut?
A. Ways t avid buying mislabeled fish. B. Mre mislabeled endangered fish species.
C. Histry f mislabeling finfish prducts. D. Cmpanies’ practices f mislabeling fish.
