Sharing New Year with Strangers
I cme frm a large multicultural family, spread ut acrss the glbe. Despite being fund in distant crners f the wrld, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effrt t stay clse and keep in tuch. New Year has always been a special time fr us and a chance fr us all t cme tgether, n matter where in the wrld we might be.
My aunt Samantha, knwn affectinately by everyne in the family as Mantha, lved New Year and always went ut f her way t make it csy and magical fr everyne arund her. Mantha was kind, fun and full f energy s it wasn’t hard t get int the New Year spirit when she was arund.
This year was n exceptin. Mantha drve three hurs frm her huse in Burnemuth t visit everyne tw weeks befre New Year and t drp ff presents t her friends still in the area. We chatted merrily abut ur plans, laughed at hw rganized Mantha was — presents already bught and wrapped and the freezer full ahead f the big day — and kissed gdbye when it was time t leave. S just several days befre New Year, when Mantha’s sn called us saying Samantha had passed away suddenly at hme, nne f us culd quite believe it. I’d nly been messaging her the day befre, sharing vice ntes like we always liked t d.
Mantha had had a bld clt (血塊) that had unfrtunately travelled t her lung and despite the paramedic’s best effrts, they were unable t save my belved, fun, wnderful aunt.
S clse t New Year, nne f us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet day at hme, surrunded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, tld us abut sme clleagues f hers wh’d just arrived in the UK far away frm friends and family. And they were eager t experience a prper English New Year.

We pened presents tgether, ate a fancy dinner and played wnderful games. All these didn’t ease the pain f Mantha’s absence but cnnecting with strangers and sharing ur culture helped us get thrugh the day. The first New Year withut Mantha was difficult but it tk n a deeper, mre special meaning. It came frm being tgether, putting aside ur differences and shwing ne anther lve.
