WHAT are scientists? They are ften described as gray-haired white-cated dull schlars.
But the wrld has changed. Yung scientists are making their vices heard and releasing their pwers n the wrld stage.
This is als true in China. Rising stars include new materials expert Gng Yngji, university prfessr Liu Mingzhen, and bilgist Wan Ruixue. At the age f 28 in 2018, Wan Ruixue received the 2018 Science & SciLifeLab Prize fr Yung Scientists. This is a glbal prize t reward utstanding scientists at an early stage f their careers.
She fcuses mainly n bimedicine and artificial intelligence. “Bth are cutting-edge (前沿) technlgies at an early stage f develpment,” she said.
“S, I think they have great ptential t be develped. I think in the study f cutting-edge technlgies, China and ther leading cuntries in the wrld are standing n the same starting line. And in the study f structural bilgy, China is likely t becme the leader.”
She felt it was her fate t becme a bilgist. “I grew interested in the natural wrld, when I was very yung,” she said. In 2009, she entered Sun Yat-sen University.
In her third year at the university, she realized that she wanted t d smething related t bimedicine. S she emailed China’s tp bilgist Shi Yigng, hping t jin his lab at Tsinghua University.
Shi recgnized her talent and welcmed her. Years f effrts at the lab paid ff. Her research n the high-definitin 3D structure f splicesme led t a scientific breakthrugh.
Unlike many f ther yung scientists wh chse t pursue further study abrad, Wan currently has n plan t g verseas.
“The whle ecsystem fr scientific research is cntinually imprving in China,” she said, adding the cuntry has great science facilities.

Measles (麻疹), which nce killed 450 children each year and disabled even mre, was nearly wiped ut in the United States 14 years ag by the universal use f the MMR vaccine (疫苗). But the disease is making a cmeback, caused by a grwing anti-vaccine mvement and misinfrmatin that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reprted in the USA, cmpared with 189 fr all f last year.
The numbers might sund small, but they are the leading edge f a dangerus trend. When vaccinatin rates are very high, as they still are in the natin as a whle, everyne is prtected. This is called “herd immunity”, which prtects the peple wh get hurt easily, including thse wh can’t be vaccinated fr medical reasns, babies t yung t get vaccinated and peple n whm the vaccine desn’t wrk.
But herd immunity wrks nly when nearly the whle herd jins in. When sme refuse vaccinatin and seek a free ride, immunity breaks dwn and everyne is in even bigger danger.
That’s exactly what is happening in small neighbrhds arund the cuntry frm Orange Cunty, Califrnia, where 22 measles cases were reprted this mnth, t Brklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-ld caused an utbreak last year.
The resistance t vaccine has cntinued fr decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Thse wh refuse t take that risk selfishly make thers suffer.
Making things wrse are state laws that make it t easy t pt ut (決定不參加) f what are suppsed t be required vaccines fr all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allw parents t get an exemptin (豁免), smetimes just by signing a paper saying they persnally bject t a vaccine.
Nw, several states are mving t tighten laws by adding new regulatins fr pting ut. But n ne des enugh t limit exemptins.
Parents ught t be able t pt ut nly fr limited medical r religius reasns. But persnal pinins? Nt gd enugh. Everyne enjys the life-saving benefits vaccines prvide, but they’ll exist nly as lng as everyne shares in the risks.
48. The first tw paragraphs suggest that ______.
A. a small number f measles cases can start a dangerus trend
B. the utbreak f measles attracts the public attentin

Runners wh encunter visual and auditry (聽覺的) distractins (分心) may be mre likely t suffer leg injuries, accrding t a research by the Assciatin f Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. Runners ften seek distractins frm the task at hand. Whether it is music, texting, daydreaming, taking in the sights, r prpping a bk up n the treadmill (跑步機(jī)), mre ften than nt a distractin is welcme. But, researchers frm the University f Flrida have recently discvered that thse distractins may lead t injury.
Daniel Herman, MD, PhD, assistant prfessr at University f Flrida, and his team cnducted a research n the effect f visual and auditry distractins n 14 runners t determine what effect, if any, these distractins wuld have n things such as heart rate, hw much a runner breathes per minute, hw much xygen is cnsumed by the bdy, the speed in which runners apply frce t their bdies, and the frce the grund applies t the runners’ bdies when they cme in cntact with it.
The runners were all injury free at the time f the study and ran 31 miles each week. Dr. Herman’s team had each participant run n a treadmill three separate times. The first time was withut any distractins. The secnd time added a visual distractin, during which the runners cncentrated n a screen displaying different letters in different clrs with the runners having t nte when a specific letter-clr cmbinatin appeared. The third time added an auditry distractin similar t the visual distractin, with the runners having t nte when a particular wrd was spken by a particular vice.
When cmpared t running withut distractins, the participants had faster applicatin f frce t their left and right legs, called lading rate, with auditry and visual distractins. They als experienced an increased amunt f frce frm the grund n bth legs, called grund reactin frce, with auditry distractins. Finally, the runners tended t breathe heavier and have higher heart rates with visual and auditry distractins than withut any distractins at all.
“Running in envirnments with different distractins may unfavrably affect running perfrmance and injury risk,” explains Dr. Herman. “Smetimes these things cannt be avided, but yu may be able t minimize ptentially cumulative (累積的) effects. Fr example, when running a new rute in a chatic envirnment such as during a destinatin marathn, yu may want t skip listening t smething which may require mre attentin — like a new sng playlist.”
Dr. Herman’s team will cntinue t investigate the ptential relatinship between distracted running and leg injuries, and any effect this relatinship has n different training techniques that use auditry r visual cues.
52. Paragraph 2 tells us the research ______.
A. prcess B. questins C. results D. reflectin
53. Based n the research, runners with auditry distractins tended t ______.
A. breathe heavier and have lwer heart rates
B. gain a faster speed with slwer lading rates
C. apply mre frce with less xygen cnsumptin
D. get an increased amunt f grund reactin frce
54. What can we infer frm the passage?
A. Running with distractins becmes uncmmn nwadays.
B. Listening t a new sng while running guarantees perfrmance.
C. Runners are advised t minimize distractins in a destinatin marathn.
D. Runners are mre likely t get injured in an envirnment withut distractins.
55. What is prbably the next task fr Dr. Herman’s team?
A. What determines training techniques.
B. What effective ways can cure leg injuries.
C. Why runners use auditry and visual cues.
D. Hw distractins shuld be used in training.
