T slve a big envirnmental prblem, chemists in the Czech Republic have been thinking small. Really small. Their new minirbt has ne purpse: t help clean up tiny bits f plastic plluting waterways acrss the glbe.
Each new rbt is n bigger than the tip f a sharpened pencil. They are magnetic (有磁性的) and shaped like stars. When sunlight hits them, they prduce chemical reactins that push them thrugh water in a specific directin. When they find a piece f plastic, they stick t it and start t break it dwn. When the light ges ut, they let g and are free t be used again.
“This wrk is great,” says Duglas Blackistn at Tufts University in Medfrd, Mass. He’s a bilgist wh did nt wrk n the prject but knws abut such devices. He’s been designing rbts ut f living cells, including sme that might help with pllutin cleanup. Speaking f the new ne, he mentins that, “These rbts can eat plastic. They chew it up. Or they can recver it and be cllected with a magnet. Scientists lve rbts with all these capabilities.”
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University f Chemistry and Technlgy in Prague led the prject. He studies ways t build micrrbts. Abut a decade ag, he says, scientists began develping tiny bts that culd mve themselves in water. Then, they had t find them a missin and thught “Let’s make them d smething useful.” Since then, Pumera has fcused n the prblem psed by micrplastics, which are everywhere—frm the bttm f the cean t air blwing nt ice atp muntains. They’ve turned up in drinking water, bth bttled and tap water, and sme studies estimate that trillins f pieces f plastic end up in the wrld’s waters. The plastic has many surces, frm drinking straws and shpping bags t laundry and cleaning wipes. Plastic desn’t easily degrade r fall apart, and that’s always been ne f its appeals.
Pumera says his final gal is t make cheap and envirnmentally friendly rbts that can be used anywhere in the wrld.
1. What d the new rbts mainly d?
A. T cllect tiny bits f plastic in the seaB. T push the pllutin in water away
C. T help d research int the plasticD. T deal with the plastic in water
2. Hw d the new rbts get pwered?
A. By starsB. By plasticC. By sunlightD. By living cells
3. Why did Pumera take part in the prject?
A. Because f public attentin t the plastic
B. Because f the challenges frm the plastic
C. Because he was asked t d s by ther scientists
D. Because he was inspired by the inventin f micrrbts
4. What is the best title f the article?
A. Small rbts, big dreamsB. N plastic in water anymre!
C. Rbts, winners against plasticD. The fight between rbts and plastic

Well-knwn artist Salvadr Dalf had an unusual methd f getting inspired. When he decided t take 3 nap n his chair after a lng day f chewing ver liquid watches and swans reflected in elephants (themes in his paintings), he wuld take a bunch f keys in his hand, place it n the edge f his chair, and nd ff in a light sleep. There was a metal tray (托盤(pán)) n the flr. When he really fell asleep, the keys wuld all ut f his hand, hit the tray with a lud nise, and wake him up.
Like American inventr Thmas Edisn, wh used the same technique, Dali believed that sleeping this way gave him a creative bst. As sn as the bject hit the tray, he wuld wake up and return t wrk. Many peple think he was talented, but researchers have nly recently tested whether this technique will wrk even n peple wh aren't similarly gifted.
The research team said they distributed mathematical prblems t participants, each f which had a hidden rule that if fund culd slve the prblem "almst immediately". After failing t slve the prblems participants were split int three grups befre trying again: peple wh stayed awake, peple wh were allwed t sink int a shallw-sleep phase f nn-rapid eye mvements (knwn as N1) fr mre than 30secnds, and thse wh were permitted t sink deeper int sleep fr at least 30 secnds.
Researchers fund that participants wh spent at least 15 secnds in N1 tripled their chances f finding the hidden rule, implying increased creative thinking, cmpared with thse wh remained awake during the break. Eighty-three percent f peple wh entered the N1 sleep cycle were able t identify the rule cmpared t nly 30% f the awake grup. "Here, we shw that jint brain activity in the zne between sleep and wakefulness (N1) stimulates creative sparks, "the authrs stated. Hwever, if they reached deeper sleep levels knwn as N2, the effect passed.
Further research is needed n why the technique wrks, but researchers claim that Dalf's technique is easy t d because peple just need t hld a simple bject. Therefre, if yu can deal with the frustratin f an annying sudden end t a brief nap, give this technique a sht and see if it bsts yur creative spirit.
32. Why did Dalf use keys and a tray t make nise?
A. T spend mre time painting. B. T avid really falling int sleep.
C. T feel fresh when he lacked energy. D. T help think up new ideas fr his artwrks.
33. What des the underlined part “bst" in paragraph 2 refer t?

34. What was each participant suppsed t d during the research?
A. Develp their prblem-slving abilities. B. Practice Dali’s sleep technique effectively.
C. Find the specific rule t slve a math prblem. D. Explre the best slutin t the prblem assigned.
35. What d the researchers suggest abut Dali’s sleep technique?
A. It requires special training B. It may well wrk fr everyne.
C. Its practical applicatin is limited. D. Its effectiveness needs t be tested.
