T Karanth, everyne in every part f the wrld is brn with a fundamental cnnectin t nature. Grwing up in Karnataka, she began accmpanying her father int the wild at just tw years ld. But in her hmetwn, kids grew up with a negative perspective n wildlife. Elephants destryed crps and smetimes peple were badly injured r killed. Karanth discvered kids wuldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place t witness extrardinary animals.
In 2017, a cnversatin with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset twards educatin. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first versin f “Wild Shaale” n their hands. A prgram designed fr students wh cme int frequent cntact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims t develp a genuine understanding f wildlife and wild spaces and mve beynd wildlife tlerance t cncepts f cnservatin and envirnmental issues. The cnservatin educatin prgram fills a gap in envirnmental learning.
While it is frtunate that a basic envirnmental educatin is supprted by lcal gvernment, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality f the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and cnsistently. “Yu have t visualize what these schls lk like. They may nt have electricity-frget having cmputers, internet, iPads, r anything.”
Encuraging the students t find cmmnalities between themselves and the animals is the first step t changing perceptins and hpefully, behavirs.” It cmes dwn t the same things: we need fd; we need water; we need space. Then they start t understand why situatins f cnflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then hw d yu cnvince them nt t get angry, nt t act in a way that leads t harm? That’s smething we’re trying t wrk n. It’s nt easy.”

An ancient diamnd fund in Btswana cntains a never-befre-seen mineral that came frm deep inside Earth. The mineral — named davemaite — prvides a unique windw int deep-Earth chemistry.
Originally dug up in a mine in Orapa, Btswana, the diamnd is abut 4 millimetres wide and weighs 81 milligrams. A dealer sld it in 1987 t a scientist, but neither the dealer nr the scientist had any idea hw special it was. The diamnd was mre recently analysed by Oliver Tschauner at the University f Nevada.
Mst diamnds frm 120 t 250 kilmetres undergrund. Tschauner and his clleagues realised that the Btswanan diamnd was frm the lwer mantle (地幔), which begins 660 kilmetres belw the surface. After examining it using X-rays, they discvered tiny crystals f anther mineral trapped inside. The crystals turned ut t be a frm f calcium silicate that was therised t exist in the lwer mantle but had never actually been bserved befre. They named the new calcium silicate mineral davemaite in hnur f deep-Earth scientist H-Kwang “Dave” Ma.
Nrmally, davemaite’s crystal structure wuld break apart if it was brught up t Earth’s surface because f the massive drp in pressure. But because it was trapped inside a diamnd, it was preserved n its lng jurney up t the Orapa mine. “When we brke pen the diamnd, the davemaite stayed intact fr abut a secnd, and then we saw it expand under the micrscpe and basically turn int glass,” says Tschauner.
The mlecules within it take n a particular cubic arrangement knwn as a pervskite structure. This structure shws it culd nly have frmed under the extreme cnditins experienced in the lwer mantle, where the pressure is mre than 200,000 times that fund at Earth’s surface. Davemaite is thught t make up abut 5 per cent f Earth’s lwer mantle, and is imprtant because it can als hst radiactive elements like uranium, thrium and ptassium-40 that heat Earth as they decay. Withut these radiactive elements, the Earth wuld have cled by nw.
28. What d we knw abut the mineral davemaite?
A. It was named in memry f a great plitician.
B. It was discvered as sn as the diamnd was fund.
C. It had never actually been fund befre the discvery.

29. What des the underlined wrd “intact” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Divided. B. Overlked. C. Hidden. D. Undamaged.
30. Why is the mineral davemaite significant?
A. Because it has a cling effect.
B. Because its internal structure is special.
C. Because it cntains heat- prducing elements.
D. Because its frmatin backgrund is extreme.
31. What is the purpse f the text?
A. T explain the uses f a substance.
B. T intrduce the discvery f a mineral.
C. T stress the rle f deep-Earth chemistry.
D. T advcate the prtectin f radiactive elements.

Cnsumptin f ultra-prcessed fds (UPFs) has increased ver the past 20 years. UPFs cntain few r n whle fds, are industrially prduced, are ready-t-eat r ready-t-heat, and include additives (添加劑). The ultra-prcessing f fd reduces its nutritinal value. It has been knwn that higher UPF cnsumptin is assciated with verweight and heart disease. Nw, research has been extended t examine its ptential cnsequences fr mental health.
In a new study, ver 72,000 participants wh were at least 55 years ld and didn’t have dementia (癡呆) at the start f the study were fllwed fr an average f 10 years, during which they filled ut questinnaires regarding their diet. At the end f the study, 518 peple were diagnsed with dementia. After adjusting fr ther factrs that culd affect risk f dementia such as age, gender, and heart disease, researchers fund every 10 percent increase in daily intake f UPFs was assciated with a 25 percent higher risk f dementia. They als fund replacing 10 percent f UPFs with unprcessed r minimally prcessed fds was assciated with a 19 percent lwer risk f dementia.
In anther study, researchers fund individuals wh cnsumed the mst UPFs had significant increases in the symptms f mild depressin, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxius days”. Eric Hecht, Funder and Executive Directr f the Institute f Etilgical Research, said, “Mre than 70 percent f packaged fds in the US are classified as UPFs and represent abut 60 percent f all calries cnsumed by Americans. Cnsidering the degree f expsure t and effects f UPF cnsumptin, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help imprve future develpment f dietary guidelines.”
Facing such alarming data, maybe it’s time fr Americans t recnsider their fd chices. Researchers recmmend taxes n UPFs and carrying ut plicies t reduce the cnsumptin. They als supprt prgrams and plicies t increase the availability and affrdability f whle fds, especially amng disadvantaged ppulatins.
32. What d we knw abut UPFs?
A. They have n nutritinal value.B. They are cheap and mass-prduced.
C. They are ready-made and instant fds.D. They serve as additins t ur daily diets.
33. What’s Eric Hecht’s attitude tward the new study?
A. Psitive. B. Negative. C. Ambiguus. D. Dubtful.
34. What d researchers suggest ding?
A. Cllecting higher taxes n UPFs.
B. Decreasing UPFs’ cnsumptin in diet.
C. Fcusing n the nutrient cntent f fds.
D. Increasing public awareness f whle fds.
35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Public Health Respnse t UPFs
B. Physical Disrders Linked t UPFs
C. Rising Cnsumptin f UPFs in the US
D. Negative Effects f UPFs n Mental Health

The benefits f psitive emtins never stp after a few minutes f gd feelings g back t nrmal. 36 It will serve t build skills and develp resurces fr use later in life. Let’s cnsider a real wrld example.

These skills last much lnger than the emtins that initiated them. Years later, that fundatin f athletic mvement might develp int a schlarship as a cllege athlete r the cmmunicatin skills may turn int a jb ffer as a business manager. The happiness that prmted the explratin and creatin f new skills has lng since ended. 38 Researchers refer t this as the “braden and build” thery because psitive emtins braden yur sense f pssibilities and pen yur mind, which in turn allws yu t build new skills and resurces that can prvide value in ther areas f yur life.
39 Why? Because building skills fr future use is irrelevant when there is immediate threat r danger (like the tiger n the path). All f this research bils dwn t the fact that psitive thinking is s useful fr develping valuable skills and appreciating the Big Picture f life.
But hw can yu get yurself t be psitive in yur life? 40 Yu prbably knw what things wrk well fr yu. Maybe it’s playing the guitar. Maybe it’s spending time with a certain persn.

Their first sessin was tense. Mr. Jenkins, sensing her frustratin, didn’t dive straight int prblems. Instead, he asked abut her interests. When Emily spke passinately abut her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if yu knw where t lk.”
Dubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began t explain cncepts thrugh visual examples. He used clrs and shapes, turning abstract numbers int smething almst tangible (有形的). Fr the first time, math seemed less like a freign language but mre like a puzzle waiting t be slved.
Hwever, prgress was slw. Weeks passed with minimal imprvement, and Emily’s patience wre thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, cnvinced she was sure t fail. Mr. Jenkins said, “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas. Masterpieces aren’t created vernight.”
Encuraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed n. She began t see the cnnectins between the steps, hw each slutin fllwed a lgical path. Small victries in practice prblems gave her sme hpe. Mr. Jenkins was always there, celebrating her successes, n matter hw minr.
