Vinacur and her daughter questined why there weren’t mre pictures f wmen n the walls. When the server shrugged (聳肩) and said, “Maybe wmen dn’t eat a lt f pizza?”, she and her daughter gt a little annyed s they didn’t tip the server. Instead, she and her daughter gathered up their things and left. Unfrtunately, they left ne very imprtant thing behind: a Citibank check fr $424,000.
When Markaj cleaned the table, he fund the mney, but when he ran utside, the mther and daughter had left. S he handed it ver t the restaurant’s wner, Frank Brija. They thught the wner f the mney wuld cme back t ask fr the check.
“We thught fr sure it was a billinaire r smething wh came in here, because wh walks arund with a check like that?” he said.
As it turned ut, Vinacur was using the mney fr a dwn payment n a huse she had seen in the area. The mney was the retired 79-year-ld scial wrker’s life savings. She and her daughter had been lking at the huse and stpped at Patsy’s fr a quick lunch afterward.
The next night she realized the check was missing and called her daughter. Her daughter searched thrugh the trash bin (垃圾桶) and everywhere but had n luck. They culdn’t remember where they left the check.
