“I never culd have imagined this is hw my life culd turn ut,” says Meldy Mnisi. “Nw it’s my dream t intrduce yung peple t nature and t inspire yung African wmen like me t believe anything is pssible.” Meldy is a 23-year-ld Suth African and has just qualified as a field guide. Despite grwing up very clse t Kruger Natinal Park, a wrld-famus safari (游獵) destinatin, she never had the chance t see r enjy its wildlife. “This was smething fr white peple, nt pr black peple like me,” she says. “I always wndered what was n the ther side f the fence.” But everything changed fr Meldy when she cmpleted a Wild Shts Outreach (WSO) phtgraphy curse, learning hw t use a camera and ging n her first-ever game drive. “I culd nt believe my eyes, seeing all this wildlife and capturing my memries and stries,” she says. “It is such an hnr t be in nature.”
WSO is the educatinal utreach arm f Wild Shts, a phtgraphy cnference in Africa that ran fr nine years prir t 2020. Its aim is t engage disadvantaged yung Africans in wildlife cnservatin thrugh phtgraphy and by prviding an intrductin t the natural wrld, helping t nurture (培育) the cnservatinists f tmrrw.
The initiative came abut in 2015 and was the passin prject f Mike Kendrick, a life-science teacher and phtgrapher. Mving t the Greater Kruger area t live in the bush, Mike was discuraged t see the lack f engagement between yung Suth Africans and their natural envirnment. A new study suggests that identical twins are nt exactly the same genetically. Identical twins are tw babies that cme frm the same fertilized egg (受精卵). Scientists in Iceland examined DNA frm 387 pairs f identical twins, their parents, children, husbands r wives. “The examinatins led the team t find early mutatins (突變) that separate identical twins,” lead researcher and geneticist Kari Stefanssn said. He is a prfessr at the University f Iceland and funder f the cmpany deCODE genetics.
Mutatins are small changes in DNA that can happen when a cell divides in an attempt t cpy itself. These small changes can influence a persn’s physical appearance r cntrl a persn’s ability t fight a disease. The newly-discvered mutatins shw that identical twins d have genetic differences, the researchers said. The results were recently published in Nature Genetics.
On average, identical twins have 5.2 f these early genetic differences, the researchers fund. But abut 15 percent f identical twin pairs have mre than that. Sme may have as many as 100 genetic differences, Stefanssn said. These differences represent a small part f each twin’s genetic material. But they culd influence why ne twin is taller r why ne is at greater risk f sme cancers than the ther.
In the past, many researchers believed physical differences seen in identical twins were related mstly t envirnmental influences, such as nutritin r lifestyle behavirs. Jan Dumanski is a geneticist at Sweden’s Uppsala University. He was nt invlved in the study. He praised the findings as a clear and imprtant cntributin t medical research. “It suggests we have t be very careful when we are using twins as a mdel fr examining the influences f genetics r the envirnment,” Dumanski said.
A 2008 paper in The American Jurnal f Human Genetics fund sme genetic differences between identical twins. The new study, hwever, ges beynd earlier wrk by including the DNA f parents, children, husbands and wives f identical twins. Studying family members permitted the researchers t examine when genetic mutatins happened in tw different kinds f cells: thse present in nly ne individual and thse passed n t the persn’s children.
Stefanssn said his team fund twins where a mutatin is present in all cells f the bdy f ne twin, but nt in the ther twin at all. “Hwever, smetimes the secnd twin may shw the mutatin in sme cells, but nt all cells,” he added. The researchers said they als fund mutatins that came abut befre the develping embry (胚胎) split in tw.
Nancy Segal is a psychlgist wh studies twins at Califrnia State University, Fullertn. She was nt invlved in the study. But she called the result “heric and really significant”. Segal added that the research is likely t persuade mre scientists t rethink the influences f genetics and envirnment n twins. “Twins are very alike, but it is nt a perfect similarity,” she said.
8.What did the examinatins f identical twins lead researchers t find?
A.A cell changes a lt in an attempt t cpy itself.
B.Genetic mutatins exist in identical twins very early.
C.Mutatins can influence a persn’s physical appearance.
D.It is pssible t cntrl a persn’s ability t fight a disease.
9.What might the new research tell peple?
A.Dctrs shuld use different ways t deal with twin patients.
B.It is n use carefully examining the genetics f identical twins.
C.There may be sme better methds t distinguish identical twins.
D.It is nt just the envirnment that makes identical twins different.
10.What des Nancy Segal think f the new finding?
A.She thinks it is the perfect finding.
B.She thinks it deserves rethinking.
C.She thinks it is cnfusing t thers.
D.She thinks it is meaningful and imprtant.
11.What is the best title fr this passage?
A.Studies Have, Fund Ways t Influence Twins
B.There Are Differences Between Identical Twins
C.Identical Twins Are Nt Genetically Exact Cpies
D.Identical Twins Cme, frm the Same Fertilized Egg
A Swiss radi statin recently carried ut a scial experiment n air, testing rbt-created vices and cntent. The 13-hur experiment tk place at the French-language statin Culeur 3. During the perid, listeners heard the clned vices f five human presenters. The statin’s prgramming als included music created by artificial intelligence (AI) methds. The prgramming infrmed listeners abut the experiment every 20 minutes.
“AI is taking yur favrite radi by strm,” a vice said. “Our vice clnes and AI are here t unsettle, surprise and shake yu. And fr that matter, this text was als written by a rbt.”
Recent AI develpments have led t the creatin f a series f tls that permit rbts t lead different human activities. These tls belng t a grup f systems knwn as “generative AI”. The tls use machine learning methds t train AI systems n huge amunts f data t prduce human-quality results. One f the mst highly publicized generative AI tls is called ChatGPT. It received wide attentin by demnstrating the ability t quickly prduce written answers t questins at a level and quality similar t humans. Hwever, the develpment f “generative AI” systems has led t sme criticism f the technlgy. Critics have warned that such systems, if used incrrectly, culd cause ecnmic, cultural and scial harms.
The statin said in a statement it received hundreds f messages n the day f the experiment, with sme supprting and thers ppsing. One persn cmplained f unfunny jkes. Anther listener admitted t nt recgnizing the prgramming as an experiment. One critic called the prject a waste f time fr a statin that gets public financing. Many listeners nted, “Yu can sense these are rbts, and there are fewer surprises, less persnality.” Sme listeners were even mre frceful, urging statin fficials t “give us back ur humans!”
The Swiss statin’s chief, Antine Multne, tld The Assciated Press that Culeur 3 was able t carry ut the experiment because it is already knwn fr ding prvcative things.
Multne defended the prject as a lessn n hw t live with AI. “I think if we becme striches (鴕鳥) ... we put ur heads in the sand and say, ‘Mn Dieu, there’s a new technlgy! We’re all ging t die!’ then yeah, we’re ging t die because it (AI) is cming, whether we like it r nt,” Multne said by phne. “We want t master the technlgy s we can then put limits n it.” He added that abut 90 percent f the listener reactins suggested the experiment was a gd idea.
12.What did the scial experiment test?
A.Audiences’ feedback.
B.Rbt-created systems.
C.Human presenters’ vices.
D.AI-generated prgrammes.
13.What des the wrd “prvcative” underlined in Paragraph 5 mst prbably mean?

Fr humans, adapting t climate change will mstly be a matter f technlgy. Mre air cnditining, better-designed huses and bigger fld defenses may help t make the effects f a warmer wrld less harmful. ①_________ In a paper published in Trends & Evlutin, a team led by Sara Ryding, a PhD candidate at Deakin University, shws that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bdies f many animal species, giving them bigger beaks (喙), legs and ears.
In sme species f Australian parrt, fr instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871. Anther study, this time in Nrth American dark-eyed juncs, anther bird, fund the same pattern.② _________
All that is perfectly cnsistent with evlutinary thery. “Allen’s rule”, named fr Jel Asaph Allen, wh suggested it in 1877, hlds that warm-blded animals in ht places tend t have larger bdy parts than thse in temperate (溫帶的) regins. ③_________ Being richly filled with bld vessels, and nt cvered by feathers, beaks make an ideal place fr birds t get rid f heat. Fennec fxes, meanwhile, which are native t the Sahara Desert, have strikingly large ears, especially cmpared with their Arctic cusins.
Ms. Ryding is nt the first researcher t take that apprach. But it is hard, when dealing with individual species, t prve that climate change was the cause f an anatmical (解剖學(xué)的) changes. All srts f ther factrs, frm changes in prey t the evlving reprductive preferences f males r females, might have been driving the changes. ④_________ The team cmbined data frm different species in different places. Since they have little in cmmn apart frm living n a warming planet, climate change is the mst reasnable explanatin.
⑤_________ That may change as warming accelerates. Since any evlutinary adaptatin cmes with trade-ffs (妥協(xié)), it is unclear hw far the prcess might g. Bigger beaks might make feeding harder, fr instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cst mre energy t grw.
A.Hwever, lking at the bigger picture makes the pattern clearer.
B.Fr nw, at least, the increase is small, never much mre than 10%.
C.Animals will have t rely n changing their bdies r their behavirs.
D.It seems that the future wrld is ging t be htter than humans are used t.
E.Therefre, the negative effects f a warmer wrld are visible in these animals’ bdies.
F.Such adaptatins bst an animal’s surface area relative t its bdy, helping it t release extra heat.
G.Similar trends are seen in mammals, with species f mice and bats evlving bigger ears, legs and wings.

I had t be rescued, and learned hw quickly the tide (潮水) culd cme in.
Christine sptted what lked like the Lch Ness mnster stuck in the sand. We decided t investigate and drve up t where the sand met the lagn. It was a camel, nt mving.
Since relcating here, I have always kept a shvel, rpe, trches and knives in my car—getting stuck in the desert can be debilitating (耗費(fèi)體力的).
I gt ut my shvel and apprached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed her Stucky. It lked as if she had been trapped fr hurs—she was in quite deep. I’ve been arund camels a lt in Dubai; they are massive. They can be friendly, but they can als be fierce. I apprached Stucky slwly and started t gently dig away the sand arund her.
