Whether it is a persn, an animal, r even an insect, a mther’s instincts (本能) are never wrng. This idea rings true fr a mther cat wh acted fast and sught ut help when her kittens were in truble. This mther cat’s quick thinking may have just saved her babies.
In the urban district f Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked int a regular hspital hlding a kitten in her muth. As the mther cat mved thrugh the hspital, peple were surprised t see such a sight, but let her pass. The mther cat asked fr help, crying fr a lng time. She was familiar t the hspital staff, wh had been leaving her fd and water utside, but they were unaware that she had given birth t kittens.
The mther cat was cncerned fr her yung because they weren’t able t pen their eyes. After the dctrs lked at the kittens, they nticed that they were suffering frm eye infectins. One f the dctrs recalls, “We cnsulted with vets (獸醫(yī)) and gave medicine as described. When the kittens pened their eyes a shrt time later, we were excited.” Later, they were sent t an animal hspital fr further care. The cats are nw up fr adptin and will hpefully find lving frever hmes.
When it cmes t mther cats and kittens, kittens cmpletely depend n mthers fr the first few mnths f their lives. Because they are blind and almst deaf until abut tw r three weeks ld, the mther cat must prtect them frm any threat r danger. Withut the mther cat’s help, the kittens may nt make it t adulthd.

When adult humans meet a baby, many can’t help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的), sing-sngy vice. This shift, knwn as parentese, is nt unique t humans. It has als been bserved in animals like mnkeys and grillas. Nw, scientists are adding ne mre species t that list: bttlense dlphins.
Dlphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in grups. They cmmunicate in a unique way: every individual prduces its wn signature sund that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday. But hw des each cme up with its distinctive whistle? Fr babies, it might have smething t d with listening t Mum. T slve this mystery, researchers examined the sunds mther dlphins make.
Scientists studied 34 years’ wrth f recrdings f sunds made by 19 female bttlense dlphins. When the mther dlphins were near their yung, they cntinued t make their signature sund, but at a higher frequency. They als used a wider range f frequencies than they did when their babies were nt nearby.
This discvery suggests that using these adjustments mther dlphins assist their yung in learning hw t prduce these calls themselves. Since dlphin babies ften spend sme years with their mthers befre living n their wn, it makes sense that this adaptatin wuld help them learn t cmmunicate. At the very least, the higher-pitched whistle likely gets the babies’ attentin. “It’s imprtant fr a baby t knw, “Oh, Mum’s talking t me nw,” says marine bilgist June Mann.
This kind f research culd help us understand hw language develped in humans. “It is abslutely essential t have basic knwledge abut ther species and hw they cmmunicate,” says Mann. “I wuld be really interested t see whether dlphins als change their sunds when interacting with babies f thers, which is what happens in humans.”
28. What d the underlined wrds “this mystery” refer t in paragraph 2?
A. Why dlphins live and play in grups.
B. Hw dlphins develp their unique sunds.
C. What aspects f intelligence dlphins pssess.

A. By analyzing mther dlphins’ sund features.
B. By recrding parent-child interactin frequency.
C. By measuring the distance between parent and child.
D. By examining the speech rgans f mther dlphins.
30. What is a suggested reasn why dlphin mthers use parentese with their yung?
A. T help them learn t talk. B. T teach them hunting skills.
C. T express wrry and care. D. T distract their attentin.
31. What is the purpse f the text?
A. T cmpare the parentese f humans and dlphins.
B. T illustrate the develpment f dlphin intelligence.
C. T share new findings abut dlphin cmmunicatin.
D. T highlight the value f studying dlphins’ language.

There have been cncerns that vide games might damage ur mental and physical well-being. Recently, mre researches have revealed these wrries are largely unfunded. Nevertheless, there exists a deep-seated idea that playing them rts yur brain — it’s easy t view them as an unprductive waste f time. But in reality, is the ppsite the case?
Fr years, “brain-training” games and apps have been cnvinced t be an effective way t bst ur cgnitive(認知的)abilities r intelligence, as it’s thught that by playing a series f quickfire puzzles fcusing n things like memry r spatial awareness, ver time ur abilities in these areas will imprve; theretically, s will ur general intelligence.
Frm a research viewpint, the key lies in whether playing these srts f games results in “transfer” effects — “near” and “far” transfer effects: near effects relate t whether playing ne memry game results in imprvements in ther memry games, whereas far effects relate t whether playing that game results in a general imprvement in cgnitive abilities. Sme studies have pinted ut brain-training games shw weak near effects. As fr far effects, there’s n cnvincing evidence that this happens.
Hwever, things get interesting when brain-training games are cmpared with vide games. In a 2015 study cmparing the brain-training game SmartP with the vide game Mazix, researchers fund SmartP players didn’t shw bsts in prblem-slving and spatial skills, but Mazix players did.
Mre recently, in 2020, researchers in Sweden studied data frm sme 9,000 children and fund that kids aged 9 r 10 wh played vide games fr abve-average amunts f time didn’t shw any differences in intelligence cmpared with thse playing less. Tw years later, they discvered that by 12, the kids playing vide games had 2.5 mre IQ pints than average.
Why vide games result in imprvements in cgnitive abilities ver mre targeted games isn’t clear. One argument is t d with the amunt f time invested: whereas brain-training apps tend t deliver mini-games ver a shrt time, vide games have players engaged and require sustained levels f attentin and prblem-slving. Despite sme prmising findings, it’s currently unsafe t say that vide games make us smarter. Meanwhile, vide games can ffer bth advantages and risks, s it’s imprtant t be cautius and avid making quick judgments.
32. What d peple usually think f brain-training games?
A. They are a waste f time. B. They can imprve ur intelligence.
C. They are easily accessible. D. They may enhance ur cncentratin.
33. What d we knw abut Mazix players?
A. They demnstrated signs f far effects.
B. They had a great talent fr vide games.
C. They exhibited bsts in gaming skills.
D. They prved the imprtance f near effects.
34. What did the studies in 2020 and 2022 reveal?
A. The limited effects f age n IQ pints.
B. The negative impacts f vide games.
C. The advantages f playing mre games.
D. The benefits f vide games ver time.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. D Brain-training Games Really Wrk?
B. Vide Games r Brain-training Games?
C. Culd Vide Games Make Us Smarter?
D. Shuld We Stp Playing Vide Games?

Furthermre, we btain pleasure frm the ther ingredients chili is generally cked and eaten with — including fat, sugar and salt. S — like skydiving — eating chili is a frm f thrill-seeking, 39 .
This maschistic relatinship with capsaicin started in the Andes f Suth America, where chili peppers riginate. Humans were ne f the few mammals n Earth that develped a taste fr capsaicin. As archaelgical evidence suggests, they started cultivating chili peppers abut six thusand years ag. Human interventin changed the chili pepper t suit human tastes and needs — including the pepper’s clr, size and capsaicin cntent-helping t explain the many different types f chili peppers nw available. 40 . Laynie had her wn watering can, s she culd “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran t the fence and started sprinkling water n anther spt. I walked ver and saw a fresh patch f dirt near the fence.
