I'm frm a fishing family. My grandfather was a fisherman, wrking ut f Fan, the Italian twn where I grew up and still live. I wrk frm 7p. m. until 11 a. m. with fishermen n the nrth Adriatic Sea. There are nly six r s f us n bard. At night, the fish are mst active and we can avid ther ships.
The net s reach the sea bed fr the catch but smetimes they als catch turtles that ften die in the net s r n bard. The net is designed t allw turtles t escapes it has a hle at the tp they can swim ut f. We call it “TED”. The TED aims at reducing the bycatch (誤捕) f turtles. Turtles and sme larger fish can leave thrugh the TED, but the current (水流) hlds mst f the catch in the net.
I ensure that the net is wrking, and that the fishermen we' re cperating with can still catch enugh fr their livelihds while prtecting turtles. The wrk is part f research by the Cetacea Fundatin, in cperatin with University f Pisa, where I'm a field researcher. It is financed by the LIFE prgrammer. I lve this wrk. It means I'm nt stuck in an ffice all day and instead can enjy the cean and wrk clsely with peple wh live by the sea.
When my grandfather was fishing in the 1970s, there were mre fish and mre turtles arund. At the fundatin, we save 50-60 turtles a year, mst f which are harmed because f fishing. If we can prtect turtles by ppularizing this device t fishermen all acrss the Adriatic, I'd see this wrk as a success.
