At 6:00 am, I stepped ut f my car int the July heat in Hustn, Texas. At fifty- three, I’d train fr my first half- marathn as my plan t build friendships in an unknwn city!
Hustn was quite a change frm Suthern Califrnia, where I grew up. I had bravely faced my husband’s jb transfer, but my future n lnger cnsisted f PTA meetings, team mm activities and my children’s high schl scial functins. What wuld each day lk like?
The answer arrived when Annie, a runner in the neighbrhd, phned and asked me t jin the lcal chapter f USA Fit. I was hping she wuld hear the disinterest in my vice, but Annie didn’t give up easily. That day Annie’s plan succeeded. S I jined her. We were divided int grups accrding t marathn r half- marathn, and pace. I had a grup and friends!
Frm the first day, fur wmen with experience, Diane, Karen, Jill, and Betsy, never left my side. When fall arrived, I came t believe I culd actually walk the half- marathn at the required rapid pace. My cnfidence grew frm strict preparatin and ur curage. The training schedule was taped t my kitchen wall. But with the realizatin that nly the final week remained , panic set in. It came frm a place deep inside, frm insecurity and the realizatin that I might nt be up t the challenge. But we cheered and held n.
My target had simply been t finish the half- marathn. At sme crazy pint, I decided t cmplete the race in less than three hurs. The last mile was nearly intlerable. Our pace had been much quicker than during training. Luckily, the final stretch was bursting with enthusiasm frm the crwded sidewalks.
Six mnths f preparatin finished with ne step ver a thin black line. Enthusiastic vlunteers, wh had been s generus with their time, placed medals arund ur necks. I felt the shiny ribbn with an verwhelming sense f accmplishment. At that mment, I realized I had becme part f my new cmmunity.

In data frm different cuntries, patients examined by female dctrs seem t recver better than thse checked up by male nes. One f the first studies t examine the issue was published in 2017 by experts frm Harvard Medical Schl. The authrs analysed the medical recrds f arund 1.5 millin lder adults hspitalised in America between 2011 and 2014. They fund patients whse primary treatment had been perfrmed by a female dctr were 4% less likely t die r t be readmitted t hspital in the fllwing 30 days, than thse whse primary dctr was a man.
Later in 2017, anther study by a separate grup f Canadian and American researchers searched fr similar trends fllwing surgery. They examined the utcmes f 100,000 patients wh had peratins in Ontari between 2007 and 2015, and fund the same results.
Since then, ther studies have made similar claims. One drawback with the studies is that they all lk back at naturally ccurring data. It culd be, fr example, that female dctrs tend t be assigned healthier patients than their male clleagues. In an experiment where patients were randmly assigned t dctrs, any such links wuld be brken, says Gavin Stewart, an expert at Newcastle University.
Researchers say the next step is t wrk ut why. Past research has fund that female dctrs tend t spend mre time with patients, are mre likely t prvide preventive care and tend t stick mre clsely t clinical guidelines than their male clleagues d. This culd dwnplay the risk f preventable deaths.
The benefits f having a female physician app ear t be greatest fr female patients. Part f the explanatin may be that female physicians understand the needs f female patients better than their male peers. Whatever the gender f their physician, thugh, female patients seem t respnd mre actively t dctrs than male patients d. This is anther divide in need f cnsideratin.
Understanding such differences in care will help all dctrs imprve their practice. Fr all the gd that advanced medical equipment and new drugs can d, a physician’s judgment seems t be as imprtant as ever.
28.What can we knw abut the patients treated by female dctrs in 2017 studies?
A.They suffered a lt in surgery.B.They were mre likely t be ill again.
C.They were given extra care in hspital.D.They had better recvery after treatment.
29.What des Gavin think is the drawback f the studies?
A.Their results didn’t apply t all the situatins.
B.The dctrs varied in their experience and skills.
C.There were n data f the cnditin f the dctrs.
D.The studies didn’t fllw the patients lng enugh.
30.What des the underlined wrd “dwnplay” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Bst.B.Reduce.C.Remve.D.Pse.
31.What accunts fr gd treatment f female patients accrding t Para.5?
A.The dctrs’ prfessinal knwledge.B.The dctrs’ will t take care f them.
C.Their fast adjustment t the cnditins.D.Their better cperatin with dctrs.

因此選A。
