The Atlantic salmn f Sctland are hard y and determined animals. Each spring and summer, they return frm the Nrth Atlantic Ocean t lay eggs in Sctland’s shallw rivers, leaping up waterfalls and ver barriers, pushing themselves upstream in enrmus effrts. Sme fail, and thers succeed, but tday they face yet anther challenge.
During the mid-1980s, there were between eight and ten millin salmn swimming arund Sctland’s Atlantic cast; that number has nw drpped sharply. There’s evidence f reducing the availability f the salmn’s prey (獵物) as climate change warms and acidifies (酸化) ceans. New research suggests climate change is als bearing dwn n rivers, which is bad news fr salmn. Adapted t life in cld water, salmn experience slw grwth and ppulatin changes at high temperatures. Heat influences their health and reduces their resistance t disease.
“Nw salmn are struggling t deal with the rising temperatures. There are recent recrds f27℃ in the upper reaches f the rivers” says Peter Cairns, directr f an envirnmental charity. In 2018. Sctland recrded the lwest ple catch fr salmn since recrds began. Evidence suggests that the degraded quality f river wrsens the impact f ur changing climate.“Atlantic salmn evlved us?ng river systems in Sctland that were nce way mre frested and therefre shaded.”
Yet Sctland is tday ne f the least wded cuntries in Eurpe, with just 3 percent f its native wdland undamaged. Scientists have fund that Just 35 percent f rivers in Sctland have enugh tree cver fr salmn survival.
A mvement t get trees back n riverbanks is gathering pace.“Brad-leaf trees clse t the bank can reduce the light that enters the water,” explains fisheries scientist Anthny Hawkins. A new initiative called Riverwds —led by the Scttish Wildlife Trust and supprted by Scttish Water and several ther gvernment and regulatry bdies —aims t create a netwrk f wdlands alng Sctland’s riverbanks, and has already received a number f large funds.“Mney is nt the pressing business. River health is cmplex, but tree planting is ne f the mst basic things we can get started with right away,” says Cairns.
23.Why d Atlantic salmn make great jurneys back t the rivers?

C.They adapt themselves t warm water.
D.They are attracted t delicius fd.
24.Hw d the rising temperatures in rivers affect salmn?

C.They are less active in water.D.They are mre likely t be delicate.
25.What is a challenge fr salmn when they return t Sctland’s rivers?
A.There is a shrtage f fd.B.There is much fish catching.
C.The ec lgy envirnment has changed.D.There’re n tree shades fr salmn survival.

If the participants bid a larger amunt, they wuld have a lw-tempting fd placed in frntf them fr the rest f the 30 minutes, but if they bid a smaller amunt, the highly tempting fd wuld remain fr the rest f the time.
The results shwed that participants were prepared t pay n average 15% f the $10 t remve the temptatin and cntinued t bid a similar amunt thrughut the task, suggesting a lasting desire t have temptatin remved. In ttal, 22% f the participant s cnsumed the highly tempting fd.

S, verall, dieting participants were willing t pay actual mney in rder t avid exerting self-cntrl in the face f temptatin.
27.In the first study, what did participants pay t avid in the first place?
A.Being left with less tempting fd fr half an hur.
B.Having the highly tempting fd remved right away.
C.Having the healthy and tasty fd changed in frnt f them.
D.Being ffered the muth-watering fd immediately.
28.What wuld the amunt f mney given by the participants further determine in the first study?
A.Whether they culd have a lw-tempting fd.
B.Whether they culd have a highly tempting fd.
C.Whether they wuld exercise self-cntrl t avid paying.
D.Whether they wuld l se a $15 bnus due t the. tempting fd.
29.What des the underlined wrd“frfeit” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.cnsumptin B.fd C.self-cntrl D.fine
