Baking lver and her bakery with “silent” staffers
Sme peple may pen a bakery t turn their passin int a prfessin. Sme pen a bakery t realize their childhd dream. Fr Zheng Xiayan, funder f Silent Bread Tree, the main reasn she chse t d s is less cmmn.
The idea t pen a bakery emerged when Zheng learned frm a silent friend in a baking curse abut the difficulties they face in jb hunting. She began t wnder what she culd d fr them, until she gt inspiratin frm the success f a bakery in Changsha, which is run by a German cuple that hires silent peple. “I decided that I wuld als pen a bakery like theirs t help sme silent peple in need,” tld Zheng.
“And that’s why I named it ‘Silent Bread Tree’. Hpefully the jbs prvided here can help the silent peple feed themselves, just like bread trees feed peple with their bread-like fruit,” Zheng added.
The bakery has 16 emplyees, six f whm are hearing and speech-impaired (有…障礙的). The principle here is t treat all staffs in the same way wherever pssible, and avid signs indicating which staff members are different. “When we asked whether t put the wrds ‘Pat me if yu need help’ n the back f their unifrm, ur silent staffs said ‘N’. That was when I realized that they just dn’t want thers t knw they’re different,” Zheng recalled.
Althugh knwing what she culd d fr the silent cmmunity is very limited, Zheng said the effrts the silent staffs have made t keep the bakery running keep inspiring her t d even mre. Fr every prduct sld, the bakery dnates 0.01 yuan t help prvide artificial cchlea implants (人工耳蝸) t the hearing and speech-impaired children in rural areas.
“If hearing-impaired children culd have artificial cchleae implants at an early age, their lives culd be cmpletely transfrmed. They wuld be able t live like peple with n difficulties in hearing,” said Zheng.
24. Why did Zheng pen the bakery?

Fr many years researchers fcused n what peple knw abut science, thinking that “T knw science is t lve it.” But d peple wh think they knw science actually knw science? A new study led by Cristina Fnseca f the Genetics Sciety, Laurence Hurst f the Milner Centre fr Evlutin (進(jìn)化) reveals that peple with strng attitudes tend t believe they understand science, while neutrals (中立者) are less certain. Abslute attitudes, bth fr and against, build n high self-cnfidence in knwledge abut science.
The study perfrmed a survey f ver 2,000 UK adults, asking them bth abut their attitudes t science and their belief in their wn understanding. Questins fcused n genetic (基因的) science, fr example, “Hw wuld yu rate yur understanding f what the term DNA means?” All individuals were scred frm zer (they knw they have n understanding) t ne (they are cnfident that they understand). The results suggest that thse at the attitudinal extremes — bth strngly supprtive and firmly ppsing — have very high self-belief in their wn cmprehensin, while thse answering neutrally d nt.
Psychlgically, the team suggests, this makes sense: t hld a strng pinin yu need t strngly believe in the crrectness f yur interpretatin f the basic facts. Results f previus studies als indicate that thse mre accepting f science bth believe they understand it and scre well n the textbk fact (true/false) questins. By cntrast, peple with strng negative attitudes t science tend t be vercnfident abut their level f understanding.
Whether it be climate change r GM fds, imprtant science can inspire strng and ppsing attitudes. Understanding hw t cmmunicate science requires an awareness f why peple may hld such different attitudes t it. When it was thught that what mattered mst fr scientific literacy was scientific knwledge, science cmmunicatin fcused n passing infrmatin frm scientists t the public. Hwever, this apprach may nt be successful, and in sme cases can have adverse effects. Wrking t address the gap between what peple knw and what they believe they knw may be a better strategy.
28. What is the new study mainly abut?
An assessment f peple’s interest in genetics.
A survey f varius attitudes twards evlutin.
A reprt f peple’s general knwledge f science.
An analysis f factrs n peple’s belief in science.
29. Why des the authr mentin previus studies in paragraph 3?
T supprt the findings f the study.
T clarify the cncept f cnfidence.
T stress the imprtance f basic facts.
T cmpare different research methds.
30. What des the underlined wrd “adverse” mean in the last paragraph?
Randm.
Negative.
Indirect.
Favrable.
31. As fr science cmmunicatin, which wuld the authr agree with?
It shuld help peple bst cnfidence.
It shuld fcus n scientific knwledge.
It shuld inspire peple t scre well in tests.
It shuld emphasize bjective awareness f neself.

Whether playing tricks r hlding funerals in the wild, crws have surprised the public with their unexpected capabilities. But their “intelligence” knws n bunds. A new study published in Current Bilgy revealed fr the first time that crws can use statistical lgic t slve prblems.
Crws have a large brain fr their size and a particularly nticeable frebrain, assciated with statistical and analytical reasning in humans. “In ur lab, crws have shwn cmplicated numerical cmpetence and careful cnsideratin during decisin-making,” said Dr. Melissa Jhnstn, a fellw at the University f Tübingen. In her recent wrk, Jhnstn and her team pushed these abilities t a new extreme, testing statistical reasning.
In the experiment, tw crws were first trained t peck(啄) at varius images n tuchscreens t earn fd treats; and gradually they had t chse between tw f these images, each crrespnding t a different reward prbability. “Crws were tasked with learning rather abstract quantities and then applying that cmbinatin f infrmatin in a reward maximizing way,” Jhnstn detailed. Over 10 days f training and 5,000 trials, the tw crws managed t pick the higher prbability f reward, shwing their ability t use statistical inference. T researchers’ much surprise, even after a mnth withut training, the crws still perfrm well every time.
Statistical reasning invlves using limited infrmatin abut a situatin t draw cnclusins and make decisins. Peple unknwingly use such cgnitive ability every day. When we select cafes fr scial meetups, ur brains autmatically weigh cllected statistics frm past bservatins and favr the ne mre capable f meeting needs. Similarly, crws remembered and analyzed the cnnectins between the images and the reward prbabilities t make themselves get the mst treats pssible.
Crws nce symblized misfrtune and death, causing them disliked even killed by peple. Actually, they are amng the few animals t adapt t urbanizatin successfully due t underestimated intelligence. “I think these studies d help change public views and imprve ur relatinship with these lvely animals,” Jhnstn stated.
32. What makes crws’ intelligence pssible?
Their limitless abilities f tricks.
Their scial leaning in the wild.
Their physical structure f brains.
Their training received in the lab.
33. Which f the fllwing best describes the research prcess in paragraph 3?
Instruct, task, and retest.
Train, perfrm, and recrd.
Assume, prve, and reflect.
Prepare, teach, and examine.
34. Hw des the authr explain statistical inference in paragraph 4?
By sharing a persnal experience.
By quting a previus study.
By making a detailed cmparisn.
By using a cmmn example.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
Fd Prize Cmpetitin: Crws Chsing Rewards.
Urban Bird Survival Strategies: Living with Peple.
Beynd Tricks: Surprise f Crws’ Statistical Reasning.
Animal Behavir Study: Training Crws in Experiments.

This is smething that all f us have nticed cuntless times in ur daily lives. Whether yu’re trying t read the fine print in a cmmercial r trying t make ut a persn’s face frm a distance — it always helps t see better when yu squint (瞇起) yur eyes. 36
There’s a cmmn assumptin that yu’re adding much stress t yur eyeballs by squeezing them t make them wrk better. 37 If yu think fr a while, yu’ll find squinting is a different matter. If squinting meant making yur eyes becme stress balls, we’d all be in a lt f truble.
38 When light hits an bject, it bunces ff its surface and enters ur eyes. The light travels thrugh the eye lens (晶狀體). The lens then fcuses the light rays, which fall n the
retina (視網(wǎng)膜). A chemical present in the retina turns light int electric signals, which are then transmitted t the brain. The brain prcesses the signals and ultimately allws us t see stuff.
The act f squinting, quite bviusly, alters the shape f the space thrugh which light passes, which helps us frm a clear image n the retina. What’s mre, light frm different directins enters and is subsequently perceived by the eye. 39 Hwever, when yu’re trying t fcus n smething, if there’s light entering frm multiple directins, the lens will be verladed. By squinting, fcusing light rays becmes mre precise.
