S the team asked 196 adults t take 5,000 IU f vitamin D3 every day fr abut nine mnths. The adults, aged 47 n average, were aware f the dse they were having. The researchers als analyzed the data f mre than 1,900 peple wh weren’t given the 5,000 IU daily dse f vitamin D. Hwever, they were free t take vitamin D supplements if they wished. Twards the end f the study, acrss this grup, the average reprted dse was 1,318 IU and the average age was 50.
Over 10 mnths, thse n the 5,000 IU dse had a lwer risk f being hspitalized due t any cause, and they had t visit the emergency rm r be admitted t intensive care less than peple in the ther grup. N participants reprted side effects.
Hwever, LaRiccia says the team can’t rule ut the age difference as a pssible cause f these results, with thse in the high-dse grup ptentially aviding hspital because they were n average three years yunger. The natinalities f peple in the tw grups als differed, with fewer Hispanic and Latin peple in the high-dse grup, which may have affected the results.
“The findings are prmising, but the study was relatively small and the study perid was t shrt t mnitr any lng-term safety issues f such a high daily dse f vitamin D,” says JAnn Mansn at Harvard University.
