At the end f 2019,I learned that Here After AI, whse gal is t let the living cmmunicate with the dead, was lking fr applicants f its new AI prject. Interested in what it was prmising, I applied t experiment the sftware n my very-much-alive parents.
At first, I thught it wuld be just a fun prject t see what was technlgically pssible. Then their health cnditin added sme urgency t the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnsed with cancer and my mther was recently develping symptms f early Alzheimer’s disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance t say gdbye.
The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questins by a techician fr hurs-abut everything frm their earliest memries t what they believe will happen after they die. Whether thrugh illness-generated cncerns r a willingness t humr their daughter, my parents put up zer resistance. The cmpany then tk their respnses and started t create the vice assistants. A few mnths later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.
When I cmmunicated with them thrugh the app n my phne, my hands were shaking. I hadn’t seen my actual, real parents fr six mnths. They tld me persnal stries I’d never heard. They gave me life advice and tld me things abut their childhds, as well as my wn. It was mesmerizing.
Persnally, I have mixed feelings abut my experiment. I’m glad t have my virtual parents. They’ve enabled me t learn new things abut my parents, and it’s cmfrting t think that thse sftwares will be there even when my parents aren’t. On the ther hand, I can’t help but find it sad that it tk a stranger interviewing my parents fr me t prperly appreciate the cmplex peple they are. But I feel lucky t have had the chance t grasp that-and t still have the precius pprtunity t spend mre time with them and learn mre abut them, face t face, n technlgy invlved.

Independent will is what really makes effective self-management pssible. It is the ability t make decisins and chices and t act in accrdance with them. It is the ability t act rather than t be acted upn.
The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has wn against unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers f this wrld give dramatic evidence t the value, the pwer f the independent will. But as we examine it in the cntext f effective self-management, we realize it’s usually nt the dramatic, the visible, the nce-in-a-lifetime effrt that brings enduring success. Empwerment cmes frm learning hw t use independent will in the decisins we make every day.
The degree t which we have develped ur independent will in ur everyday lives is measured by ur persnal integrity. Integrity is, fundamentally, the value we place n urselves. It’s ur ability t make and keep cmmitments t urselves — t “walk ur talk.” It’s hnr with self, a fundamental part f the character ethic, the essence f active grwth.
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, mment-by-mment. Management is discipline, carrying it ut.
Discipline stems frm disciple (追隨者) — disciple t a philsphy, disciple t a set f principles, disciple t a set f values, and disciple t an ultimate. purpse. In ther wrds, if yu are an effective manager f yur self, yur discipline cmes frm within; it is a functin f yur independent will. Yu are a disciple, a fllwer, f yur wn deep values and their surce. And yu have the will, the integrity, t place yur feelings, yur urges, yur mds after thse values.
That placement requires a purpse, a missin. It als requires independent will, the pwer t d smething when yu dn’t want t d it, t be a functin f yur values rather than a functin f the urge r desire f any given mment. It’s the pwer t act with integrity t yur first creatin.
28.What is the authr’s purpse in mentining “the Helen Kellers” in paragraph 2?
A.T explain a reasn.B.T highlight a pint.
C.T make a predictin.D.T give a definitin.
29.What d the underlined wrds “walk ur talk” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Put wrds int deeds.B.Display cnfidence.
C.Stp talking big.D.Strike a balance.
30.T achieve effective self-management, what will the authr prbably recmmend?
A.Seeking external supprt.B.Undertaking mre missins.
C.Sticking t ne’s wn values.D.Fllwing ne’s desires.
31.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.The Secret Behind Self-disciplineB.The Magic f Persnal Integrity
C.The Pwer f Independent WillD.The Rad t Effective Management

During the last 12 mnths, have yu lked at phtgraphs with family r friends? During the last 12 mnths, have yu taken any phtgraphs r vides t preserve memries? In the natinwide survey in 1995 f nearly 1, 500 peple, 91% f respndents (受訪者) said they’d lked at phtgraphs with family r friends and 83% had taken a phtgraph in the past year. If the survey were repeated tday, thse numbers wuld certainly be higher. The ppularity f smartphne cameras and scial media has led t an increase in pht-taking and sharing, frm capturing everyday mments t special ccasins.
S are all f these captured mments, these persnal memries, a part f histry? Fr histrians Ry Rsenzweig and David Thelen, the answer is YES, and they believe the very cncept f histry is develping. They led the 1995 survey t understand hw peple thught abut the past. This grundbreaking study was welcmed by histrians and thse wrking in museums, because it helped them t think abut the public’s understanding f their field.
Little did Rsenzweig and Thelen knw the subject f histry was abut t be affected by a hst f technlgies. Fr example, ver a third f the survey’s respndents said they had researched their family histry. The activity gt much easier the fllwing year, when Paul Brent Allen and Dan Taggart launched Ancestry.cm, which is nw ne f the largest nline genealgical (宗譜的) databases. Researching yur family tree n lnger means studying dcuments in the lcal library.
The survey als asked whether respndents had watched a mvie r televisin shw abut histry in the last year; fur-fifths respnded they had. The survey was cnducted shrtly befre the 1 January 1995 launch f the Histry Channel, which pened the fldgates n histry-themed TV. Nwadays, streaming services let peple watch histrical dcumentaries nn stp n demand.
Tday, peple aren’t just watching histry. They’re recrding it and sharing it in real time. As these technlgies becme cmmnplace, they are rewriting the fficial accunt f histry. Maybe the best way t think abut Rsenzweig and Thelen’s survey is that it ffered a snapsht (快照) f public habits, as thse habits were abut t change unavidably.
32.What is the 1995 survey mainly abut?
A.Different family traditins.
B.Public understanding f histry.
C.Effects f persnal memries n family histry.
D.The behavir f camera and scial media users.
33.What might be a part f histry accrding t Rsenzweig and Thelen?
A.Live-streaming services.B.Persnal pinins n histry.
C.Phts taken by smartphnes.D.The idea f genealgical database.
34.Accrding t the last paragraph, the 1995 survey______.
A.fails t keep up with technlgyB.just reflects public habits back then
C.suggests the imprtance f histryD.prvides cntexts fr histrical research
35.What culd be the best title fr the passage?
A.Technlgy Speeds the Develpment f Histry
B.Smartphnes May Rewrite the Official Histry
C.Histrians Find a New Way t Explre the Past
D.Technlgy Can Change Our Cncept f Histry
