One f the greatest surces f unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see smething we dn’t like, we wish it culd be different. We cry ut fr smething better. That may be human nature, r perhaps it’s smething rted in ur culture. The rt f the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things t be different. Hwever, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s nt bad r gd, and it just is it.”
In ne f my bks, I said “Yu shuld expect peple t mess up and expect things t g differently than yu planned”. Sme readers said it’s t srrwful t expect things t g wrng. Hwever, it’s nly negative if yu see it as negative and judge it as bad. Instead, yu culd accept it as the way the wrld wrks and try t understand why that is.
This can be applied t whatever yu d: hw ther peple act at wrk, hw plitics wrks and hw depressing the news media can be. Accept these things as they are, and try t understand why they’re that way. It will save yu a lt f sadness, because yu’ll n lnger say, “Oh. I wish bad things didn’t happen.”
Des it mean yu can never change things? Nt at all. But change things nt because yu can’t accept things as they are, but because yu enjy the prcess f changing, learning and grwing.
Can we make this wrld a better place? Yu can say that yu’ll cntinue t try t d things t help thers, t grw as a persn, t make a difference in this wrld. That’s the crrect path yu chse t take, because yu enjy that path. Therefre, when yu find yurself judging and wishing fr difference, try a different apprach: accept and understand. It might lead t sme interesting results.
